Ariston water heater, all the lights are blinking

Typical malfunctions of Ariston heaters

Why doesn't the equipment work? The answer to the question will be found in diagnostics or the boiler itself. Modern models are equipped with control boards that regulate the operation of all nodes in the system. When a breakdown occurs, a fault code is displayed. If there is no display, then the error is indicated by the indicators (flashing).

What to do and how to fix problems, read below.

Water heater errors

The information on errors presented below will be given separately for Ariston water heaters, separately for Termex devices.

Ariston water heater sensor differential errors and their causes:

  • E1 – system error. Control board malfunction. Voltage surge, condensation has formed on the control board.
  • E2 – “dry” inclusion. Turning on the device without water in the tank.
  • E3 – short circuit or depressurization of the temperature sensor.
  • E4 – the water temperature has risen above 90˚C. The thermostat is not working.
  • E10 – temperature sensor malfunction.
  • E11 – excess temperature (more than 105˚С). The temperature sensors are faulty, the heating element is overheating.
  • E12 – water temperature is 12˚C higher. Thermal sensors are faulty, there is a large amount of sediment and scale on the heating elements.
  • E13 – difference in readings between sensors by more than 50°C. Touch differential error, faulty temperature sensors, dirt in the boiler.
  • E14 – slow water heating. Low voltage in the network, a lot of scale and sediment in the device.
  • E15 – lack of water in the tank. The safety valve has tripped.

There are models that do not have a display with letters. Then the causes of malfunctions and solutions should be looked for in the operating instructions specifically for this model.

Touch differential without letter error indicator

Remember! Due to the fact that electronic control units are constantly being modernized, manufacturers may not indicate all errors in the operating manuals for different water heaters.

Termex water heater errors:

  • e1 – there is no water in the boiler;
  • e2 – thermostat malfunction;
  • e3 – the temperature rose above 85˚C, the thermal switch tripped;
  • The display shows Vakum, Over-heat, Demo, protection has been triggered when turned on without water.

In devices of certain series, errors e1, e2, e3 are accompanied by a sound signal and automatic shutdown.

DIY repair

You can fix some problems yourself. The main thing is to follow our recommendations.

Water heater does not turn on

First of all, check if there is voltage in the network. You can check this with a screwdriver with an indicator: it should light up on “Phase”, but not on “Zero” and “Earth”. If the cable insulation is damaged, it is not recommended to carry out repairs. It is better to replace the element immediately, but make sure that the new cable matches the old one in terms of parameters.

Light indication of the Ariston boiler

To diagnose the socket, connect another device. If it also does not work, the outlet is faulty. It is better to call an electrician to replace it.

A short circuit or lack of grounding leads to permanent shutdown of the RCD. A breakdown of the heating element on the body also leads to similar consequences. In this case, the element is diagnosed and replaced.

The RCD machine could break. To confirm your guesses, press RESET on the instrument panel. Is the light on? This means food is being served. Then press TEST and RESET again. If the indicator lights up again, the RCD is working normally.

Appearance of the safety RCD

Boiler does not heat water

Check the tightness of the contacts between the plug and the socket. If everything is in order and the voltage is supplied normally, you need to check the heating element. Do you have a storage type of boiler? Then drain the water from it first. A volume of water of 50-80 liters can be removed through the tap. It is better to drain 100 liters or more using a valve.

The tightness of connections plays an important role

Remove the housing from the wall. Now you need to pull out the flange to which the heating element is attached. In Ariston 80 liter models, the flange is secured with only one bolt. In other cases, you will have to unscrew 5 bolts.

Dismantling the mounting flange of the heating element

Disassembly is done like this:

  • Rotate the flange along the axis.
  • Take it out of the tank.

Scrolling and pulling out the heating element

  • Heater diagnostics are carried out with a multimeter. Read more in the article: “Replacing the heating element in a water heater.”
  • If the multimeter needle moves, the part is working. Is it standing still? You need to install a new one.

Have you noticed that the water takes longer to heat up than usual? This does not mean that the heater is broken. Perhaps the reason is scale: over time it grows in a thick layer and interferes with normal heat transfer. Clean the element with special means.

Lack of heat may indicate a broken thermostat. Perform a reset on the boiler panel. If the appliance cannot be restarted, the thermostat is faulty.

A tester will help diagnose the breakdown more accurately:

  • Set the multimeter to the maximum position.
  • Attach the probes to the contacts of the thermostat (located next to the heating element).
  • Does the arrow on the screen move? The device is working.

There is another option:

  • Heat the thermostat with a lighter.
  • Set the multimeter to "minimum".
  • Place the probes on the contacts.
  • If the arrow moves away from zero, then the part is functioning normally.

If there is a malfunction, the thermostat needs to be replaced. Disconnect the wiring from the part and pull it out of the hole.

Checking the thermostat with a multimeter

Installation is carried out in reverse order.

Frequent malfunctions

  • The gas supply level has decreased;
  • During gas supply, the burner does not ignite;
  • Burner shutdown due to poor gas flow through it;
  • During operation of the boiler, noise increases;
  • Switches off after a short period of operation;
  • The secondary heat exchanger is clogged with scale;
  • Suddenly it stopped starting.

The most common error codes and troubleshooting methods

The most popular among Ariston boilers are wall-mounted 24 kW models. During the operation of the Ariston gas boiler, failures and malfunctions may occur, like with any other equipment. The list of error codes is given in the instructions in the form of a table. Some of them are a malfunction of the automation (cause a protective shutdown of the device) and can be eliminated by clicking on “Reset”, and some signal malfunctions and interference in the operation of the boiler and require intervention (block the operation of the system).

All codes are divided into six groups according to the number of boiler components. The first value indicates the node in which the failure occurred, the rest indicate the error code. But it should be noted that if the protective error is repeated frequently, this indicates a malfunction.

The most common of them:

  • error sp 3 (5p3) - refers to problems with ignition and means flame separation. Happens on Ariston Clas Evo models and indicates a problem with the gas block. Checking and adjusting the gas valve can solve the problem, but in some cases the reason lies in improper assembly of the coaxial pipe on devices with a closed combustion chamber;

Ariston Clas Evo boiler control panel

  • error 501 - no ignition. Check whether the gas valve is closed; if there is supply, you should pay attention to the ionization electrode, it may get wet, dry it with a hairdryer. Look to see if it is bent; the distance from the electrode to the comb should be 8mm with a tolerance of 1mm; see if the connection between the electrode and the board is good;
  • error 607 - stuck contacts of the fan control relay; replacing the relay, and sometimes the entire electronic control unit, will help.

Design and operation of Ariston boilers

Heating equipment produced by Ariston is widely known abroad and in Russia. The brand gained its popularity thanks to a large assortment of models, varied pricing policies, reliability and quality.

Boilers are available in single-circuit and double-circuit designs. The first ones work only for heating, the second ones - for heating and hot water supply (DHW). Combustion chambers are open and closed. Depending on the installation method, there are wall-mounted and floor-mounted options. Therefore, both a resident of a private house and the owner of a small apartment will be able to choose a suitable unit for themselves.

The self-diagnosis system allows you to quickly understand the reasons for stopping work. Error codes are conventionally divided into two types: they can be eliminated by the user themselves or require contacting a service center.

What to do and how to fix the problem

You can fix the problem yourself. At the same time, it is not necessary to do a full-fledged repair with your own hands. It is enough to act in accordance with the instructions:

  • e1 - turn off the device and wait until the water completely fills the tank;
  • e2 - turn off the water heater, reboot, use a multimeter if the problem persists;
  • E3 - replace the old thermostat with a new one.

If the error code on the electronic unit does not disappear, it is worth looking at the condition of the device parts. Some elements may need to be replaced:

  1. A heating element. When the case is in a vertical position, carefully remove the cover. If the part is faulty, the machine may receive an electric shock.
  2. Sealing gasket. When it deforms, leaks occur, so urgent replacement is required. First you need to try tightening the screws. If nothing has changed, you need to install a new gasket.

Leak in tankLeak at the place where the water heater is attached to the body.
It is also worth looking to see if there are any holes in the body of the water heater. Usually they are at the bottom. If anything like this appears, you should disconnect the boiler from the power supply, disassemble it and look at the condition of the internal parts. It may be worth cleaning the walls from accumulated plaque, and the problem will disappear.
