The world-famous manufacturer of water heating equipment Termex has launched production in Russia. The devices are simple, and repair of Termex water heaters can be done independently by a person with minimal mechanic skills. This is relevant, since service centers cannot be found everywhere in our country. After carefully studying the technical instructions, you can diagnose faults.

Basic information about the boiler design

water heater models
The oldest concern for the production of water heating equipment for home use has been supplying its products to the country since 1995. It meets all international and Russian standards. The Thermex brand also includes the Champion, Quadro, and Blitz devices. That is, their device is identical to the main brand. Termex water heating equipment uses only electrical elements, wet and closed, as a heater. The product line includes;

  • storage devices of various capacities;
  • flow devices;
  • combined, flow-storage systems.

Timely cleaning and replacement of the anode will extend the life of the main element.

water supply connection diagram
Regardless of the principle of accumulation and supply of water, the devices have common functional units, which become unusable over time, and the Termex water heater requires repair:

  1. A storage device consisting of a shell, an internal tank and a heat-insulating layer between them. The inner vessel is made of galvanized steel or has an enamel coating. Outer shell made of plastic or metal with powder coating.
  2. A heating complex in the form of one or two open elements and an anode for each of them. The electrodes are mounted with fastening on one platform, which is removed from the outside by unscrewing the fasteners.
  3. Process control equipment - temperature sensor, thermostats, electronic control systems, safety valve.
  4. Mounting gaskets, pipes, taps and valves for connecting the device to the system.
  5. Electrical wiring with fuses, panel, and network equipment, RCD and ground loop.

All internal storage tanks can be either enameled or galvanized. All of them have a magnesium anode paired with a heating element.

Flow-through systems use a dry element in a copper shell; they do not accept scale, but are destroyed if there are aluminum parts in the liner. Water passing through an aluminum radiator carries ions that will destroy the copper heater body.

Design of a 50-liter Thermex water heater Like every EWH, models from this manufacturer consist of basic elements: Shell. Made from enameled steel, stainless steel or durable plastic. Cylindrical or flat flattened shape, for example, as in Flat boilers. There is a removable cover at the back, which is removed during repairs or maintenance work. The tank is made from high-quality stainless steel with the addition of ASTN+ titanium, or steel, which is lined on the inside with glass ceramics using Oxygen Tree technology without oxygen metal processing. In thinner models, 2 cylindrical tanks are installed, which are connected to each other using the Double Tank method. Pipes for cold water inlet and hot water outlet. The first pipe is shortened, ends at the bottom, the pipe of which is marked on the body with a blue plastic ring. The second pipe is extended and ends at the top of the tank; it is necessary so that the already heated water comes out first. The pipe from it is marked with a blue plastic cover on the lid. Polyurethane foam thermal insulation. It is located under the casing. Necessary in order to maintain the temperature of the liquid in standby mode for as long as possible. When cut, the thickness of the thermal insulation reaches ten centimeters. heating element. It is located at the bottom, secured by a flange with 6 nuts. There are two types of heating element (heating element): one in contact with liquid and one dry (covered with another shell). Some models are equipped with two heating elements. Which work both together and separately. Inside the copper shell there is a nichrome spiral, which converts electricity into heat. An anode is screwed nearby, protecting the entire device from destruction. It is also secured to the flange. Thermostat and thermostat. They are necessary to turn off the heating element when the set water temperature is reached. The thermostat is located on the flange. Remote Control. It contains start keys, control of the power of the heating elements and the temperature of the liquid. Each water heater is equipped with a monitor that displays the water temperature or a motorized indicator. Electrical wire. Includes a safety shutdown mechanism to protect users from electrical shock. There are 2 plates mounted on the back for wall mounting. The boiler kit comes with 4 anchor bolts. At the cold water supply inlet, it is necessary to install a GP return valve, which is also included in the kit. The installation diagram for each model may vary slightly. You can find it in the manual. Specifics of 50-liter boilers All 50-liter water heaters from Termex are manufactured with perpendicular and horizontal installation types. The difference between horizontal boilers is that the heating element is on the right side, and the inlet and outlet pipes are located at the bottom. Such models include Thermex Flat Plus IF 50H, Champion Silverheat ESS 50H, Slim ES 50 H. The power of such devices is from 1.2 kilowatts (GP 50S) to 2.5 kilowatts (Sprint EQ 50V). ERD 50V water heaters are equipped with a dry heating element (TEN). The case is most often standard, cylindrical, ultra-thin, like the Ultra Slim models, and vertically flat, like the Flat models. Models Smart Energy FSS 50 V, Diamond RZB 50-L, Touch 50V are equipped with an electronic control board with an LCD monitor. Thermex Elite water heaters are equipped with a computer control system and are delivered with a remote control. Sprint brand boilers have 2 heating elements; they are characterized by the fastest possible heating of the liquid. Operation and possible major breakdowns 50-liter models are most often used for domestic purposes in homes. This displacement is quite enough for two consumers. If the installation is carried out according to the instructions, then it is not difficult to figure out how to use the device. Open the taps, wait until the device draws the required amount of liquid, start the boiler and set the desired temperature. Full heating will take 1-1.5 hours. If you plan to leave for a while, then you don’t have to drain the water; you just need to turn off the taps and turn off the power to the device. Most often, two elements break down: the heating element and the tank. The heating element may become damaged or rust. To avoid this, it is recommended to carry out preventive descaling work annually. The tank is subject to destruction because it is constantly in contact with liquid. In order to extend the service life, install a magnesium anode inside the flange. They must be replaced every 6 months. Do not forget to periodically drain the liquid from the safety valve; this is necessary to monitor its performance and drain sediment. It is recommended to do this every 3 months. It is important to carry out preventive maintenance in a timely manner, this will extend the life of the device. Design of Termex 80 liter water heaters Mechanism of Termex 80 liter electric water heaters. Let's take Thermex Flat Plus IF 80V as an example. The device includes: Flat shell, made of durable plastic. There are gray covers at the top and bottom. On the sides of the bottom cover there are service hatches secured with rivets to improve repairability and simplify access to the heating elements. Internal tanks made from quality ASTN+ stainless steel with a high content of alloying impurities and titanium, which resist destruction. They are located in a vertical position, connected at the top and bottom by pipes. Thanks to the patented system of 2 Double Tank fragments, the device is conveniently shaped and takes up minimal space. Internal seams are made using individual electron beam welding technology under G.5 vacuum conditions, for even greater safety, because, as everyone knows, welds are considered the most vulnerable places in tanks. On the left side of the tank there is a pipe for collecting hot liquid. The end of the pipe is at the top, and at the bottom it is connected to a double stainless steel pipe. Externally, the pin is marked with a red plastic pad. On the right side of the tank there is a pipe and a shortened pipe for collecting cold liquid. Marked with a blue overlay. In addition, there is a special drain pipe for installing the GP safety valve and draining the liquid. A check valve is necessary to release water and reduce pressure in case of overheating or strong pressure from the central line. It is recommended to connect the pipe to the drain and drain a small amount of water at least once a month to remove deposits and check that the valve is working properly. On the back side at the top and bottom there are 2 plates for attaching to the wall. They are bolted to the shell. The set also includes 4 anchor bolts. Between the tank and the shell there is a thermal insulation layer of polyurethane foam. This reduces heat loss and ensures energy efficiency. Inside there are two heating elements, the power of which is 1.7 and 0.7 kilowatts, consisting of a copper shell in which a nichrome spiral is located. They are secured with steel support flanges, which are screwed with 6 nuts. Each flange is equipped with a magnesium anode; it protects the tank and the housing of the heating elements from destruction. They should be replaced twice a year. The electric thermostat is located in one of the flanges. Connects to a thermostat and controls the water temperature. Equipped with overheating protection. Universal electronic control panel. It has an LCD monitor that displays the temperature. Three operating mode sensors: temperature preservation (Temperature Preservation), Operation of 1 or 2 heating elements (Single Power and Double Power). And 3 keys: starting and turning off the electric water heater ON/OFF, selecting power (Power Selector) and setting the heating temperature (Temperature Selector). After you select the heating level, after a few seconds the current liquid temperature will be displayed. The standard set includes an electrical cable with a protective shutdown device, which is designed to protect consumers from electrical shocks during breakdowns. There is a drain and self-cleaning system. Simple electrical diagram of RZB: Electricity is supplied to the safety thermostat so that if it overheats, it turns off the power from the heating elements. The thermostat and thermostat are connected to the control panel, where the desired temperature and power are set. Wiring to the heating elements comes from it. The frame is connected to the ground cable. How to start a Thermex electric water heater After installing the Thermex water heater, open the cold water tap and the hot water valve to remove air from the device. As soon as the tank is full, water will flow out of the faucet. After filling the tank, connect the device to the power supply; if your model is equipped with a protective shutdown system, hold down the key located on it. If the RCD trips (turns off), this indicates that a breakdown has occurred. Starting using mechanical control The control panel contains buttons for selecting power with built-in indicators. Turning on one button means selecting a power of 1.3 kilowatts, and two buttons means choosing 2 kilowatts. To select the correct power, several nuances must be taken into account. The first is the required volume of hot water and the second is the current time of year. During operation, you will be able to adjust the desired temperature; to do this, just turn the knob of the regulator, which is located on the control panel. If you turn the knob counterclockwise to maximum, the device will turn off, but if you turn it clockwise to maximum, the maximum permissible temperature will be set. How to turn on the EWH if the liquid has warmed up to more than 85 degrees, and the thermal switch has tripped and turned off the heating element? To do this, press the thermoswitch rod on the thermostat until you hear a characteristic click; the thermostat is located under the cover. Connecting an EWH with a touch monitor When initially turned on and after power failures for models with a touch monitor, you need to know that the device goes into DEMO mode, in which the heating element is turned off. How can I start the Thermex device? In order for the device to switch to normal mode, you will need to simultaneously press and hold the upper and lower brackets for several minutes, these are the mode selection buttons on the control panel. Before doing this, make sure there is enough water in the boiler. Connecting and disconnecting the device must be done by holding down the start button. In standby mode, the Thermex signature and indication of the current time and temperature will light up on the monitor. After turning on, the EWH warms up the water; as soon as the set temperature is reached, the indicator lights up. In heating mode, you can set the desired power using the upper and lower selection brackets. At a power of 1.3 kilowatts, “Single power” will light up on the indicator; when choosing a power of 2 kilowatts, “Double power”. The second clamp sets the required temperature, the upper bracket in the direction of increasing, the lower bracket in the direction of decreasing. If the brackets are held for some time, the characteristic will change quickly. The degree of temperature change is equal to one degree. To set the timer, hold the left clamp on the control panel. The device is now in standby mode until the set time. The third press of the right bracket sets the time, the fourth you set the minutes. With the fifth press you will set the hour timer and the sixth, the minutes timer. The seventh clamp returns the system to operating mode. On the monitor of the Stainless G.5 FLAT DIAMOND device, as in other models, with the same diagnostic system, if overheating, heating element or thermostat breaks down, an error message pops up and the power is turned off.

When is a water heater repair required?

The first sign of a malfunction will be the absence or weak heating of water in the storage tank or flow system. Possible faults are analyzed. Water heater repair is required if:

  • no signal about power supply, no current in the electrical circuit;
  • there is power, the indicator lights up, but the water does not heat up - the heating element has failed;
  • The thermostat failed;
  • leaks or fistulas appeared;
  • the anode needs to be replaced.

For self-repair, you will need a minimum set of tools and spare parts for the device - a spare heating element assembled with gaskets, a magnesium electrode and seals. You will need keys to unscrew the fasteners, a brush to remove scale, and a flashlight to examine the internal condition of the enamel coating. A Termex 80 liter or other water heater can be repaired with your own hands in a certain sequence:

  1. If there is no power, the socket may be faulty, there may be no contact in any of the network wires, or the power supply has simply been cut off in the line. Care and a current indicator will help you find the problem. But power may not be supplied due to interlocks provided in the dry start protection system, low insulation, or tripping of an RCD.
  2. The heating element does not heat. After removing the cover from the housing, free access to the terminals of the heating element and use a tester to check it for serviceability. If there is voltage at the terminals, but the element does not heat, it requires replacement. In accordance with the instructions, drain the system and save information on the location of the wires on any medium so that they can be connected correctly in the future. Disconnect the wires, remove the temperature sensors and unscrew the flange connection of the platform with the heating element and anode. Replace the faulty heating element, and at the same time clean or replace the magnesium electrode. It is attached to the same flange, but it can be removed separately without disassembling the circuit.
  3. A leak in the seals that appears during operation indicates wear of the sealing gaskets, which need to be replaced or rewinded at the flange connections. If a leak appeared after replacing the heating element, when they were repairing the Termex water heater with their own hands, the flange was skewed due to uneven tightening. You need to re-install and replace the gasket.
  4. If the heating element is working properly, power is supplied, but there is no heating, you need to check the serviceability of the thermostat. To do this, the unit is dismantled and tested for its reaction under operating conditions, that is, in an environment of 600 and at room temperature. Deviations in the response to power supply are considered a malfunction.

Lack of grounding accelerates corrosion of all elements under water. To prevent the tank from rusting and the flanges from wearing out, a grounding circuit is necessary.

It should be noted that a leak in the storage tank cannot be eliminated for many reasons. The inner tank is covered with enamel; welding will destroy it. But another insurmountable difficulty is the three-layer structure, when it is impossible to dismantle the internal tank without damaging the thermal insulation and the upper casing. Therefore, you need to treat the tank with care, knowing that it cannot be repaired.

Do-it-yourself Termex boiler repair

Before you begin the repair, first gather the necessary tools: a set of wrenches, an adjustable wrench, electrical tape, various screwdrivers, pliers.
After this, turn off the water by closing the inlet and outlet valves to the water heater. Then drain the water from the boiler tank and disconnect it from the power supply. The next step is to remove the protective cover. If you have a vertically located boiler, then the lid is located at the bottom, and in the case of a horizontally located one, it is on the left or in front.

When removing the cover, pay attention to the stickers. Often the screws for fastening it are located under these stickers

If you have unscrewed all the screws and the cover still does not come off easily, check the stickers again.

Replacing the heating element

First, perform all of the above steps and remove the tank cap.

To make it more convenient to work, you can even remove the tank from the wall.

It is worth noting that most Thermex models have not one, but two heating elements. Therefore, it is imperative to remember how and in what sequence the parts need to be connected. It’s better to photograph the whole process.

To remove the heating elements from the Thermex water heater, remove the top cover by unscrewing the bolt; disconnect all plugs and unscrew the bolts securing the heating elements.

The heating element itself is turned off as follows:

  • After removing the cover, find the protective thermostat, remove the tips from it;
  • also remove the tips (3 pieces) from the heating element;
  • cut the plastic clamp;
  • Unscrew the screws, removing the sensor;
  • now disconnect the cable and unscrew the four screws;
  • then you need to dismantle the nut on the clamping bar and pull out the heating element.

After dismantling the heating element, it is necessary to clean the surface of the tank from dirt and scale. Only after this can you install a new heating element and put everything back together.

Do not forget that the heating element does not always need to be changed. If the water in the tank still heats up, but it happens slowly, then, most likely, scale has formed on the heating element. Then dismantle it and descale it. Then install. The problem should go away. Also, do not forget that it is advisable to clean the heating element with chemicals rather than scrape off the dirt. In the latter case, there is a possibility of damage to the part.

To clean the heating element, you can use a solution of citric acid or vinegar (its percentage in the solution should be about 5%). The part must be immersed in liquid and wait until the scale falls off. Then you need to wash the heating element.

Faulty thermostat

The thermostat in Termex water heaters is located under the cover, next to one of the heating elements, and its sensor is located inside the tank.

Sometimes the thermostat fails. This element cannot be repaired; it must be replaced. To perform the replacement, you need to do all the preparatory steps, remove the cover, then remove the thermostat. But before dismantling, we recommend checking this part. To do this, use a lighter to heat the tip of the sensor (copper). If the thermostat is working properly, you will hear a characteristic click, which means that the protection mechanism has activated and the circuit has opened. Otherwise, you will have to replace the part.

Tank leak

No matter how trivial it may sound, but first you need to find where the water is coming from. A lot depends on this, since if the tank is rotten, you will have to buy a new water heater. So:

  • if water oozes from the side seam, then the container is rusty and repairs will not be possible;
  • If water comes out from under the lid at the bottom, then you need to disassemble the tank.

If traces of leakage are found in the places where the heating elements are attached, then your water heater is not hopeless and can be saved by replacing the gasket.

In the case of the second option, complete all preparatory steps, then remove the plastic cover. Next, take a close look at where the water is leaking. If it comes out near the flange, then the rubber gasket has deteriorated (less often this is a problem with the heating element). Otherwise, the tank is rusty and the boiler can be thrown away. To replace the gaskets, you need to remove the heating element. But it is necessary to carefully examine the heating element itself. If it is cracked, it is also better to replace it.

Other faults

If you have checked and replaced all the parts, but the boiler still does not work, then it is quite possible that the electronics have failed. The control board cannot be repaired, and it will be extremely difficult to find a similar one in a store. Therefore, in this case, we recommend contacting specialists.

How to care for your water heater

The quality of main water allows for an increased content of hardness salts. A concentration of magnesium and calcium salts that is harmless to humans precipitates on the surface of the heating element. The same layer of salts on the inner surface of the tank is not dangerous. It increases the protective layer and becomes additional insulation. And the heating element must be cleaned annually, since the sediment does not conduct heat, the element overheats and fails. In an acidic solution of acetic or citric acid, the precipitate is destroyed and the element becomes pure.

As a preventive against scale, you can use preliminary softening of water before supplying it to the water heater. There are special water purification filters for this. Be sure to install a filter on the water supply line to remove suspended substances from the water and direct them into the sump.

How to determine whether the heating element is faulty

If an 80-liter Thermex boiler does not heat water due to a broken heating element, the symptoms of the problem are as follows:

  1. The panel shows the automatic device being constantly knocked out.
  2. The RCD trips regularly.
  3. If a person touches water, a noticeable current discharge occurs.

What to do next? Armed with a tester, identify problem areas. Pay special attention to the terminals that secure the cable and the thermostat or heating element together. Before turning on the meter, fix the measurement scale from 220 to 250 V. If deviations in the voltage readings are detected, the problem is not in the heating elements, look further for the cause of the breakdown.

Change the operating mode to resistance measurement. The boiler is disconnected from the power supply and thermostat. How to measure resistance?

  1. Bring the tester to the contacts of the heating component and connect.
  2. Look at what the device shows - if there is resistance, the heating element is functioning correctly. If there are no readings, it is necessary to replace the old heating element with a new one, because it cannot be repaired.

If the thermostat and thermostat have failed, you should get rid of the thermostat and set the resistance measurement mode. Connect the tester to the thermostat contacts, change the position of the adjustment knob to maximum and take measurements. No response – a breakdown has been detected.

If there is resistance, set the tester to the minimum value, attach the probes to the contacts and light the lighter, your goal is to heat the thermostat bulb. If the thermostat is OK, the relay will operate and the circuit will open, the resistance will show infinity on the display.

When should a professional repair a water heater?

Even a small Thermex 50 liter water heater can be repaired by professionals if:

  • the device is under warranty;
  • emergency shutdown is triggered;
  • The electronic unit has reset the program and can only be restarted by a specialist.

Sometimes the reason lies in a malfunction of the bypass valve. If it is not cleaned regularly, it may become unusable. If the RCD fails, it needs to be replaced. But at the same time, the RCD does not allow the system to start working if a malfunction occurs somewhere in the circuit, the spiral burns out. The RCD is located on the supply cord in front of the plug.

Knowing the structure of the water heater and carrying out timely maintenance of it, you can ensure a long maintenance-free period of operation.

Operating principle of an electric heating tank

The operation of the water heating tank is based on the principle of convection:

Cold water always enters the storage water heater from below, and when heated, it rises upward, where the hot water intake tube is located.

  • cold water enters the tank through the inlet tube;
  • the heating element turns on and heats the water to the set temperature (there is a regulator on the dashboard with which the temperature is set);
  • thanks to convection, hot water rises independently to the top of the tank;
  • the hot water outlet tube is located at the top of the device, through which the heated liquid enters the pipeline;
  • when the water temperature in the tank drops, the thermostat turns on the heating element, and when it reaches the maximum, it turns off.

it-yourself repairs are carried out in the same way for both the 80-liter Thermex water heater and the 50-liter Thermex water heater . Their design is identical, only the tank volumes differ.
