How to insulate windows with your own hands - “old-fashioned” methods and modern technologies

Insulating windows for the winter is a special tradition in our latitudes. It does not even bypass the owners of modern PVC profile windows, let alone those wooden structures that still remember the Soviet leaders. After all, glass that is poorly secured in the frame will let in not only sunlight, but also wind and cold. It is clear that more often such work is carried out on old windows. At first glance, there is nothing complicated here. However, you need to know how to insulate windows with your own hands correctly and how to do it - so that your work is not in vain, and the result is obvious.

Time-tested technologies

Old technologies make it possible to independently insulate wooden windows for the winter inexpensively and relatively quickly. Their use involves ensuring the tightness of all window parts , which is especially important where there are opening parts. The materials used for such insulation are divided into groups:

— for sealing cracks that arise during operation,

- for sealing the vestibules.

Insulation with newspapers and paper

Insulating wooden windows with newspapers or paper can be done cheaply and quickly. It will also help you get rid of your unnecessary newspaper stock. So, the old paper is torn into small pieces, then placed in a suitable container and filled with water.

Thus, the paper turns into a kind of paste that can easily cover all the cracks. When dry, the mass will harden and serve as a reliable sealant. Don’t forget to leave the vents without insulation, just like the balcony door, otherwise opening them may result in the insulation falling out (and all work will need to start again).

Tip: Newspaper pulp can be supplemented with 2 parts of chalk and 1 part of wheat flour - you will get a more reliable composition that can be easily removed from window frames in the spring.

Insulation of windows with cotton wool and fabric strips

If you have cotton wool and fabric or paper strips, then use the following insulation method:

  1. Using a thin knife, caulk the cracks with technical wool.
  2. Paper or fabric strips are glued on top. You can use regular soap as glue. Paper tape is also suitable for quick work.

We insulate old windows with cotton wool and paper

Insulation with foam rubber and tape

A budget option would also be with foam rubber - it is cut into strips, after which it is carefully pushed into all existing cracks. The top of the insulation is sealed with tape. The work is carried out quickly, and the effect is tangible. It is only important to choose tape with a valid expiration date, otherwise all your efforts will be in vain.

Insulation with newspapers

If you have piles of old newspapers accumulated at home, and there are no other materials at hand, then this old-fashioned method will help keep your home warm.

Newsprint should be torn into small pieces, placed in a large bowl, bucket or basin and filled with water. After complete soaking, the newspaper paper will turn into a paste-like mass, which will need to be carefully covered with all the cracks. During the drying process, the newspaper mass will harden and will not allow cold air to pass through.

In the spring, the depressurization process will be quite easy: when you open the windows, the hardened mass will simply fall off on its own, leaving not a trace on the window frames.

But it should be taken into account that in winter it will become impossible to open the windows, so it is better to leave the windows uninsulated to be able to ventilate the room.

Some residents prefer a slightly improved method: they additionally add one part of wheat flour and two parts of chalk to the newspaper mass. This method will bring a more significant effect.

We insulate windows in a new way - modern technologies

Window insulation using Swedish technology

Swedish technology involves the use of tubular material made from silicone rubber . It is important to choose a high-quality seal that is not afraid of temperature changes and is resistant to paints and dirt. This is exactly what they produce in Sweden (which is why the technology got this name).

So, how to insulate windows with your own hands using Swedish technology? The insulation is a rubber tubular profile with a service life of 20 years. This profile is glued into pre-cut grooves on the window. It must be sealed very tightly, otherwise it may fall out.

Important: The amount of sealant used depends on the design features of the window - for example, if the window has separate sashes, then only the inner sashes are insulated, while the outer sashes remain untouched.

How to insulate window glass

Such insulation involves the use of innovative material based on polyester (high molecular weight polymer). Other materials—organic compounds, metals and their oxides—are “woven” into the energy-saving film in a special way, which makes it possible to change the initial properties of the polymer. At the same time, the structure of the material’s molecules is such that light passes through them perfectly.

Insulating a window with film

Thus, the energy-saving film does not create optical distortions visible to the eye, is inert to household chemicals and does not contribute to the formation of dust on the windows. In addition, this material creates a mechanical strengthening for the glass - in case of damage, it will not shatter into the smallest traumatic fragments. The film is characterized by both frost resistance and environmental safety.

To insulate windows with your own film, you will need:

- the material itself in the right quantity,

- scissors and a stationery knife,

Insulation work is carried out as follows:

  1. The glass is washed and degreased.
  2. The joints of the frames are sealed with foam rubber or other sealant.
  3. Apply 2-sided tape to a clean surface of the window frame.
  4. We glue one layer of film of the required size with tape along the entire perimeter of the window frame.
  5. Using a hairdryer, we heat-shrink (smooth) the material.

Keep in mind that you should not over-tighten the film - the material itself will take on the required tension over time.

In addition to insulating windows, insulating walls, floors and ceilings is also important. Read our article about how to insulate the inside of a balcony. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of various materials.

And we have a separate article about insulating a balcony with polystyrene foam. Also from it you will learn what are the advantages of polystyrene foam over mineral wool.

Insulation with silicone sealant

Insulation using sealant is considered one of the highest quality and most durable. For the work you will need a sealant (silicone) and a special lever syringe (gun) for applying it.

Tip: For insulation work, choose a transparent sealant - it will be invisible on the glass if it accidentally gets there.

Silicone insulation work is carried out in the following order:

Insulating wooden windows using transparent sealant

  1. The glass is removed from the window (stock up on new glazing beads, because old ones very often break during dismantling).
  2. Clean the seat from dirt and dust, then apply a strip of silicone there.
  3. Reinstall the glass and secure it again with glazing beads.

It turns out that at the same time as insulation, you will also carry out minor repairs to your wooden windows. If the work is carried out in the summer, then get serious about the repairs - repair cracks in the frames, change the fittings - this will improve both the heat-saving qualities of the structure and its appearance.

Modern technologies

If you are not completely satisfied with traditional window insulation, you can turn to modern technologies and materials. Such methods require money, but the effect will be more significant and body loss will be minimal.

Affordable and not very expensive modern materials for insulation will make it possible not to repeat the insulation process every year and will retain their insulating qualities for many years. Insulation of window openings can be done with one of the most popular materials that the modern market offers: silicone and sealant.

Silicone sealant

Silicone sealant is an ideal product for sealing and sealing voids and joints. Insulating windows with silicone sealant requires a perfectly clean surface. The most important preparatory stage will be cleaning the glass and frames, as well as checking their integrity. Otherwise, material costs and efforts will be completely useless.

This method does not require large material costs. You will need:

  • silicone sealant (transparent or white at the discretion of the owner);
  • construction gun for working with sealant;
  • flat blade screwdriver;
  • work gloves for safety.

To begin, remove the glass by carefully removing the wooden glazing beads using a flat-blade screwdriver. The beads are first moved back and raised along the entire perimeter of the frame, and then carefully removed in a certain sequence: bottom, side, top.

To avoid injuries, it is recommended to work with gloves, protecting your hands from uneven beads and glass chips. It is advisable to remove the glass with an assistant; this will make the work much easier and ensure greater safety.

The container with sealant must be inserted into a construction gun, which, when you press the lever, will squeeze out an even amount of silicone. As a rule, this method of insulation is more effective when carried out together with preventive window repairs. You can remove peeling paint, fill cracks, fallen knots, sand the surface, replace failed fittings, cracked glass, and broken glazing beads.

After evenly distributing the sealant bead around the entire perimeter of the frame, all you have to do is install the glass in the updated place and secure it with glazing beads. Fast, efficient and inexpensive. And rest assured that the updated window will serve you for many more years.

Features of insulation of plastic windows

Only installed plastic windows themselves do not require insulation, however, over time, even these structures lose some of their unique properties. Frequent reasons why you need to insulate metal-plastic windows are:

- wear of rubber gaskets or loss of elasticity,

- shrinkage of the wall and, as a result, the appearance of cracks,

— depressurization of areas between slopes and frames.

Insulation work in this case may consist of adjusting fittings, replacing rubber seals, as well as installing slopes.

Window glass decoration

Using a curtain on a window is a classic way to complement the interior of a room, it is standard and will be remembered and used even in 100 years. But there are other ways to decorate a room without the use of tulle and fabric curtains.

Application of frosted glass

Frosted glass protects well from the sun and is not translucent. This is a good option for closing windows instead of curtains. If desired, the glass can be completely frosted. You can make sure that some part remains transparent and the other is matte - it’s a matter of preference.

Insulation of window openings

When installing metal-plastic or wooden windows, it is necessary to insulate not only the window frames themselves, but also the entire area of the window opening , and work should be carried out both from the outside and from the inside.

External thermal insulation is carried out using a special sealant - it is intended for street work and is able to fill all the gaps formed during installation, also protecting the mounting foam from adverse effects.

Mineral wool or expanded polystyrene can also serve as a thermal insulator. These materials are quite cheap, but at the same time provide a high-quality thermal layer and tightness.

Keep in mind that windows that are insulated from the outside are additionally protected from the cold.

Insulation of slopes

Insulation of slopes can be carried out with various materials - sandwich panels, plasterboard or polystyrene foam. The most popular materials are gypsum and polystyrene foam - they are budget-friendly and quite suitable for doing the work yourself.

The process of insulating slopes with plasterboard is as follows:

- gypsum blanks of the required sizes are prepared - they are cut out and treated with a moisture-resistant primer, after which they must dry,

— starting from the side slopes, the workpieces are inserted into the slots,

— a gap is created between the plasterboard sheet and the wall, which is filled with polyurethane foam and temporarily taped with tape (painting tape),

— the upper slope is securely fixed with a beam resting on the window sill,

- after the foam has hardened, the timber and tape are removed,

— the resulting slopes are primed and painted.

Tip: A plastic profile is attached around the perimeter of the window opening to match the color of the wallpaper. The seam between the gypsum material and the window is securely sealed with sealant.

You can also do foam insulation yourself. All work here comes down to gluing the thermal insulation boards completely to the outer wall surface . For such insulation you will need both the foam itself and the adhesive solution, as well as plaster and reinforced fiberglass mesh.

The work process in this case is as follows:

- foam plastic is glued to the slope from the outside,

- all resulting cracks are filled with an adhesive solution,

- the surface of the foam is completely covered with reinforced mesh,

- the resulting structure is plastered.

The foam can be secured together with special plastic connectors. This will make the structure more reliable.

How to insulate a window sill

The window sill of a plastic window may also need insulation. For these purposes, standard materials are suitable - polystyrene foam or mineral wool. It is advisable to carry out insulation work before installing the window sill - you can lay the foam in advance and glue it with foam. After installation, all gaps are also treated with foam.

If the window sill is already installed, then you need to identify all the existing cracks and treat them with silicone or other sealant suitable for outdoor work.

The above recommendations will allow you to enjoy the view from the window without feeling the cold. It is important that all work will require a minimum of costs from you - after all, you can carry it out yourself.

Modern methods of insulating wooden windows

Heat-saving film

Finally, we came to consider options for insulating wooden frames using modern technologies. The film helps retain heat indoors in frosty conditions, and in the summer, on the contrary, accumulates cool air.

Heat-saving film

There is an adhesive applied to one side of the film, so attaching it over the window and removing it later is not difficult.

Polyurethane foam

It happens that conventional devices for insulating cracks do not help, and in order to achieve complete tightness, you need to use additional means, for example, polyurethane foam.

Polyurethane foam

Polyurethane foam is sold in cylinders of different sizes. Foam tends to swell and blur after application to cracks, so to avoid damage to the frame you should always take this nuance into account. After it has completely dried, excess material should be trimmed with a knife.

Application of Swedish technology

The Swedish technology for insulating windows made of wood consists of sealing the components together using a special rubber strip with an adhesive base. It is located directly in the groove, in holes specially formed for this purpose. If these holes are missing, you will have to make them yourself using a router. Whether you are ready to sacrifice the integrity of the window structure is up to you to decide.

Craftsmen claim that high-quality material has proven itself to be durable and, most importantly, resistant to the influence of detergents, which especially scrupulous housewives love to neglect. In addition, the product comes with a 10-12 year warranty.

Silicone sealant

Often cold air leaks into the room through areas where the glass is combined with the sash. Previously, apartment owners made do with ordinary putty with a simple composition, which could be purchased on the market in the “construction” aisles. Some craftsmen completely reduced sealing windows to the use of plasticine.

Of course, it is impossible to achieve good results using primitive means. Today, the outdated putty has been replaced with a high-quality silicone-based sealant. It is not applied with fingers, as was done in Soviet times. But the appearance of a wooden frame, the cracks of which are sealed with sealant, is superior in comparison with other analogues.

Using sealant

Restoration of wooden windows in this case begins with the removal of glazing beads. What are glazing beads? They are slats that support the glass, thereby securing and protecting it from falling out or into the room. The glazing beads must be removed carefully; if done carelessly, they can break, and purchasing new ones will, oddly enough, be quite difficult.

Next, take out the glass and leave it in a place where household members or children cannot inadvertently touch the material, break it and get injured.

Now go over the seat with a household sponge, thus removing dirt, dust particles, paint and other types of finishing of wooden products from the coating. Inspect the device and determine where the groove is where the glass is fixed. It is this groove that should be filled with sealant. To simplify the process, arm yourself with a new syringe, draw the product inside and squeeze the contents directly into the groove. Experts advise using a mechanical syringe, which is used in auto repair shops.

Without waiting for the mass to dry, fix the glass again in place and reinforce it with glazing beads. The process can be considered complete; to further insulate it, the areas between the glasses are filled with pieces of foam rubber. The foam rubber is fixed with glue or sewing pins with transparent ears.

Alabaster

Alabaster is also used to renew wooden frames. Take 2 parts of alabaster and one part of chalk, add water, the mass should look like oatmeal (slightly viscous).

Alabaster putty

The only drawback that this method of insulation has is that in winter it is impossible to open a window reconstructed with alabaster, because as soon as you start pulling the handle of the product towards you, the material will crumble on its own right at your feet. But there is also an undeniable advantage - alabaster leaves behind a completely clean coating that does not need to be washed or cleaned further.

Is it appropriate to install shutters?

You can hear advice from some owners of private houses: installing shutters or roller shutters will help insulate windows. We strongly doubt the advisability of such a decision, if only because it is impossible to stay with the windows tightly closed during the daytime. Moreover, this method does not work at all if the windows are in really bad condition.

You should not deceive yourself and purchase expensive roller shutters - it is more appropriate to first insulate a wooden window, and only then think about the need to purchase shutters.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

The question of how to insulate windows for the winter is especially relevant in mid-latitudes. It does not bypass even the owners of plastic structures, to say nothing of the shaky wooden frames that still caught the Soviet leaders. Glass that is poorly fixed in the frame will transmit not only the sun's rays, but also wind and cold. At first glance, there is nothing complicated, however, you need to know how to insulate a window with your own hands so that the work is noticeable and the result is obvious.

Newspapers

This is the simplest and probably the oldest way to insulate windows.

We take newspapers and tear them into small pieces. Place the torn paper in a container and fill it with water until it becomes mushy. Use the resulting “remedy” to cover all the cracks in the windows.

After complete drying, the newspaper putty we prepared will become an excellent protection against cold winds.

By the way, I didn’t know before how to insulate windows for the winter with newspapers. Moreover, I was not aware of this somewhat improved method. It consists in the following.

To make more reliable protection against drafts, take one glass of flour, two glasses of chalk, and several pieces of newsprint. Pour it all with one glass of water and stir until it reaches the consistency of sour cream. Apply the resulting mixture to the problem areas of your window.

Insulation of wooden windows

There are many ways to insulate old windows yourself. Among them there are both temporary measures for the season and long-term ones for several years. The best of them are for your attention.

  • Paper strips and newspapers. Soak old newspapers in water, and with the resulting mass fill the voids and spaces between the glazing beads and glass, and all other cracks. Often, newspapers were rolled into tubes, which were subsequently soaked in water and pasted over the cracks. Cover all joints between glass and frames with strips of paper. To do this, dissolve the laundry soap to a liquid consistency and apply the solution to paper strips. After that, quickly glue them to the surface. The downside is that with the arrival of spring, the stickers will have to be peeled off. This is where the main trap lies in wait - pieces of paint can fly off with the paper.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

Important! For convenience, you can use cash register tape as paper strips, so your work will be simpler and more accurate.

  • Cotton wool and strips of fabric. If you want to learn how to insulate wooden windows without much damage, then this method is for you. Technical (or medical) cotton wool is pushed into all the cracks, and on top of everything it is sealed with cut strips of fabric soaked in a soap solution, as in the previous method. You should not be skeptical about this method, since it performs all its functions with a bang. Cotton wool is an unchanged material, but fabric strips can be easily replaced with modern adhesive tapes or paper tape.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

  • Scotch tape and foam rubber. Foam rubber will help you to properly insulate the windows in your house if there are large gaps in the sash. In other words: the movable sashes are so dry that they cannot fit tightly to the frames. In this case, you won’t be able to get away with simple cotton wool.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

It is necessary to stick foam rubber around the perimeter of the sashes, which will provide a tight seal when closing the window. And if self-adhesive foam rubber was not available for sale before, it was nailed to the frame with small nails. This material will serve you for 2-3 years, after which it will begin to deteriorate or lose its original shape. The frame joints are covered with paper tape.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

  • Paraffin. This method only applies to sealing small cracks. The paraffin is melted, drawn into a syringe and then filled into the cracks with the molten liquid. If the cracks are large, the first step is to insert a cord or rope into the hole, and then fill the holes with paraffin. The effect will last for a couple of seasons.

  • Swedish technology. A popular and advertised method for insulating an old wooden window. Interestingly, the technology was not invented by the Swedes, but the name comes from the material it uses, EuroStrip, which is manufactured in Sweden.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

The correct name of the method is groove insulation technology. This is not even simple insulation, but partial reconstruction.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

After it, the window can be opened even in the winter season, and insulation in this way will last up to 20 years. Small cracks between glass and glazing beads are filled with sealant.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

Pre-rinse and dry the openings, and apply the sealant at a temperature of +5 +40 °C. Cut the nozzle along the marked line and put it on a special gun. Apply the composition to all hard-to-reach places, distributing it evenly. If sealant gets on the glass or window sill, remove it with a cloth soaked in gasoline.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

  • Heat-saving film. The use of this material is a relative innovation. It easily lets the sun's rays into the room, and does not “let out” infrared radiation from the room, which ensures the preservation of heat. This film consists of two sides, one of which is equipped with a metallic sheen. When gluing the film to the glass, make sure that it is “turned” towards the street with the metal side. Apply the gluing overlapping the frame, secure the edges with tape. If the sticker is applied correctly and accurately, no one will even notice its presence. Thus, even a double-glazed window can be insulated.

How to insulate windows for the winter quickly and effectively

This article is devoted to the question - how to seal windows for the winter ? A fact known to all Russians is that over time, almost all wooden window frames dry out. As a result of this process, they crack, the gaps near the glazing beads increase, and the sashes themselves no longer fit so tightly to the frame.

How to insulate windows for the winter

As soon as it gets cold outside, we feel a draft from under the cracked frame. If, due to cracks and cracks, the room loses too much heat, the house is poorly heated, or the owner of the room seeks to reduce the cost of heating the apartment, then it makes sense to insulate the windows. The first thing you should think about is heating radiators. Most often they are installed under the windows. As you know, hot air rises.

If window sills are installed above the radiators, and the radiators themselves are covered with curtains, then most of the heated air will go into the cracks of the cracked frame, and not to heat the room.

It is important to ensure that the radiators are not covered with curtains and that the window frame is securely sealed.

The methods described below are used to insulate old wooden windows. However, recently, some plastic windows have also begun to require insulation. Most often this is due to the fact that they were not used correctly or were poorly installed. In this article we told you how to adjust plastic windows for the winter in 10 minutes.

There are several ways to insulate old windows. Starting from insulation with improvised materials for a short period of time, and ending with the use of modern means that provide reliable sealing for more than one year. Some methods assume that once above-zero temperatures are established, materials will need to be removed. Others are designed to ensure that the applied materials remain in place. The most commonly used and most effective methods are described below.

Insulating old windows with paper

Soak newspapers in soapy water

Most often, either old newspapers or paper strips in a roll are used for insulation. This is one of the oldest, most popular and probably the cheapest methods.

Newspapers are dipped into water and soaked. The resulting newspaper mass is used to fill the cracks in the frame. Some find it more convenient to use tubes, which are also made from newspapers, then lowered into water and pushed into the cracks. Paper strips are glued over the newspaper mass or simply at the joints.

Regular laundry soap is used as glue. It is either diluted in water until it becomes liquid, or a strip of wet paper is rubbed with wet soap. And before the paper has time to dry, you need to seal the window frame with it. This is a fairly simple method of insulating windows, but it is not without its drawbacks. As it gets warmer, all the paper has to be torn off and pulled out. And then the following problem may arise: the paper is tightly stuck to the window sash, which means that the paint comes off the windows along with the paper. In addition, small pieces of paper are often very difficult to wash off and have to be removed from the frames along with the paintwork. Because of this, we recommend using other methods.

Insulation with cotton wool and fabric

We insulate windows with cotton wool and fabric

Insulating windows using these materials has become a good replacement for “paper insulation.” They started pushing non-wet newspapers and industrial wool into the cracks and gaps. And paper strips were replaced by strips of fabric. Which were glued in the same way over joints and sealed cracks using soap or a soap solution. Air bubbles in cotton wool act as a heat insulator. In addition, cotton wool is much easier to remove than stuck paper.

Strips of fabric can be torn off frames more neatly than paper strips. In this case, the paintwork on the frames will remain in place. This method is still used today, and it is quite effective, despite its simplicity and cheapness. Cotton wool is still considered a useful material today. However, the fabric stripes can be replaced with something more modern. For example, special window tapes. They are produced specifically for these purposes, and are a roll of paper tape. It also leaves the frame coating in place and does not leave any adhesive residue.

Insulation using foam rubber and paper tape

Window insulation with foam rubber

This method is advisable to use if there are large gaps and crevices in the window frame. In other words: the frame has dried out so much that when it is closed, the doors do not fit tightly to the frame. Therefore, it will be extremely difficult to get by with just cotton wool. In this case, foam rubber should be glued to the sash along its entire perimeter. It is he who will ensure tight closure.

Once upon a time, strips of foam rubber did not have an adhesive side, and it had to be nailed straight to the frame. Today, foam rubber can simply be glued, since it has a side on which double-sided tape is already applied. It is enough to simply peel off the protective paper strip and press the foam rubber to the place of gluing. This material has a fairly long service life compared to paper or fabric.

The service life of foam rubber is 2-3 years, after which it will have to be removed, as it becomes unusable due to environmental influences. Paper tape is glued over the foam. As the weather warms up, the tape is removed, and the foam rubber (if it is still in good condition) is left in place.

Insulation with paraffin

Melting paraffin

This method can be used if there are very small gaps in the frames. To fill the gap, paraffin must be melted. We collect the resulting mass into a syringe and fill the crevices.

If the gaps are large enough, you can use twine or rope. First we push the string into the crevice, and then pour paraffin on top of it. Such insulation is usually enough for several seasons.

Insulation using Swedish technology

Window insulation using Swedish technology

This method gained its popularity largely due to advertising. In fact, this technology does not belong to the Swedes, since it was not invented by them. The technology received this name due to the fact that the main material (EuroStrip) used for window insulation was invented in Sweden. The real name of this method is the technology of groove insulation of windows. This method of insulation is not insulation as such. This is rather some kind of reconstruction of the entire window as a whole.

After this procedure, the frame can be opened and closed an unlimited number of times throughout the winter, since it is not sealed. And the resulting “warm” properties are retained for about 15-20 years. The technology of this method is such that all cracks and gaps are sealed with sealant. Before starting work, windows must be washed and dried. In addition, the sealant can be used only if the temperature conditions are observed: from +5 to +40 degrees Celsius. Using a construction gun and a special nozzle, the sealant is easily applied and evenly distributed even in the most difficult to reach places. You need to remove excess sealant before it dries, simply wiping it with a sponge soaked in gasoline. Once the sealant has dried, excess sealant can be cut off. To seal the porches, use a rubber seal. It has a tubular profile and is made of silicone. The manufacturers of this seal assure that it can be painted and is not afraid of dirt, dust and even temperature changes. The seal is produced in a wide variety of diameters and structures. As a result, its selection is carried out based on the size of the gaps. Measuring the clearance is quite easy. You just need to wrap a piece of plasticine in cellophane and squeeze it between the frame and the sash itself. Installation of rubber tubes can be equated to restoration, so it is better if this work is performed by specialists. As a rule, the price of such an upgrade is comparable to the cost of a new set of PVC profile windows. This method is good mainly for those windows that have been carefully maintained and are of some value (for example, historical). In the future, with careful care of the windows, the seal can last 10-20 years.

Insulation using heat-saving film

We insulate windows with film

This technology can be called relatively new. Heat-saving film is capable of transmitting light from the window into the room, but not releasing infrared radiation. This helps retain heat in the room. On one side (which has the property of thermal conductivity), a metallic-colored coating or film is usually applied. The film is glued so that the shiny side faces the street.

Moreover, you need to glue it so that there is an overlap on the fittings. The film is fixed with tape. This film can be glued to any windows, including PVC.

Sealing window openings

Foam sealing

Sealing of openings can be considered one of the most important procedures. It often happens that the windows themselves are sealed well, but the gaps in the slopes or under the window sills are quite large and remain uncovered. Most often, such cracks are sealed using polyurethane foam. This is a fairly simple option that does not require much time.

After the foam has dried, its excess will need to be cut off and painted over the cut. Some people use putty to seal cracks, which is quite easy to do with your own hands. To do this, take building plaster and chalk in a 2:1 ratio and mix with the addition of water. The advantage of this method is that the white putty is not as noticeable as the yellow foam.

If you are the owner of plastic windows and are faced with the fact that the windows let in cold air, we recommend reading the article on how to switch plastic windows to winter mode.

Insulation of window openings

This is one of the most important points. Half-arm gaps between the slope or window sill and the frame, as builders often leave, are not always noticeable.

  • The most common way to insulate such cracks is to fill them with foam. Indeed, there is little hassle. But after drying, you need to cut off the excess and seal this “beauty” with paper tape.
  • To seal the cracks, you can use self-prepared putty. Take building plaster and chalk, mix them in proportions 2/1, adding a little water. Treat the cracks with this putty, and in this case the color will not stand out much against the background of the frame.

Insulation of slopes

To insulate slopes indoors, you can use materials such as sandwich panels, foam plastic or plasterboard. Foam plastic and drywall are most suitable - they are quite budget-friendly and are suitable for independent repair work.

Drywall for window slopes

The slopes of the windows inside are insulated with plasterboard as follows:

  • Prepare plaster blanks of the required sizes. Cut them out and saturate them with a moisture-resistant primer and let them dry.
  • Starting from the side slopes, insert the workpieces into the slots.
  • Fill the resulting gap between the sheet and the wall with foam and temporarily seal it with masking tape.
  • Securely secure the slope from above with a beam resting on the window sill.
  • As soon as the foam has dried, the tape is removed, and the treated slopes are primed and finished painted.

Foam plastic for insulation

An example of how to insulate slopes from the outside with polystyrene foam and plaster. All work in this case comes down to correctly gluing the foam boards to the outer surface of the wall. To carry out the manipulation, both the slabs themselves and the adhesive solution are needed, in addition to plaster and fiberglass reinforced mesh.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

The working process is as follows:

  • glue the foam on the outside of the slope;
  • Fill all the resulting cracks with an adhesive solution;
  • completely cover the entire area of the slabs with reinforced mesh;
  • plaster the resulting structure.

Foam can be secured between plastic connectors, this will give the structure greater strength.

Features of sealing plastic windows

If you want to know how to insulate plastic windows, then the structure is pretty shabby, since only the installed packages do not need additional sealing. Often the causes of drafts are:

  • shrinkage of the wall and the appearance of cracks;
  • wear of rubber gaskets or loss of their elasticity;
  • violation of the seal between frames and slopes.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

The following work may be required: insulating the window sill, adjusting fittings, replacing rubber seals, or installing slopes as described above.

The given recommendations and video with a step-by-step description of the work will allow you to enjoy the view from the window without feeling the cold and drafts.

Tidying up the frames

So, how to properly insulate windows for the winter? Where to begin? First of all, we need to take care of our old frames. In general, the service life of frames is usually about ten years. But few people change frames at least once during this time. As a rule, they last much longer in our homes, because replacing the frame is expensive. The result is obvious - the tree dries out. It begins to warp, and over time small gaps appear between the frames and the window frame. Then the glass slides. And this already leads to large cracks. You can endlessly glue these cracks with paper and plug them with cotton wool, but this will be of little use. The wind will still seep in, blowing away the heat.

If you do not own double-glazed windows, the issue of insulating windows is relevant every year. Inspect the windows, open the sashes. Pay attention to the glass. If they do not fit very tightly to the window frames, coat the cracks on both sides with special putty. If somewhere you have applied too much, remove the excess with a rag so that the putty does not interfere with covering the doors. Then strengthen the loose glass by tapping the nails in the glazing beads with a hammer.

In general, if we talk about ideal thermal insulation, then you need to completely remove the glass , and then put them back in with double putty. By the way, if you don’t have putty on hand, you can get by with oil paint. It also covers cracks well. Take out the glass, cover the folds with paint (the layer should be impressive) and start glazing. At the same time, you should not wait for the paint to dry, otherwise you will ruin the whole thing. Then paint the glazing beads. Finally, if you don’t have paint, you can get by with regular plasticine. This option is not particularly good, because plasticine still reacts to temperature, and therefore under the influence of heat it can leak and stain the windows.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

cotton wool

Windows were insulated with cotton wool for the winter back when I was a child. There are several varieties of this insulation method. The most popular of them is this one.

  • prepare water, laundry soap, cotton wool and paper;
  • cook the paste using water and soap;
  • While the paste is boiling, plug all the cracks in the windows with cotton wool. For convenience, you can use a knife;
  • cut the paper into strips, grease them with the resulting glue and glue them on top of the cotton wool.

And here is a way to insulate windows for the winter with cotton wool.

The principle of operation is the same, only fabric strips should be used instead of paper. To make your windows look neat, you need to use white material.

How to insulate windows

In general, experts say that the best material for insulating windows is special tubular profiles (they are also called sealing gaskets). They come in different sizes and are made of different materials. Perhaps the most practical are foam pads, rubber and polyethylene foam. All these types of insulation can be found on any construction market.

It is necessary to carry out annual inspections of the condition of windows and their slopes. Of course, it is better to do this not in winter, but earlier.

Insulate windows with newspapers

Pasting with newspapers is an old-fashioned method. But this does not change his positive qualities. We roll each newspaper into a tube. Its width should be slightly larger than the distance between the window sashes. Then place the resulting rolls vertically close to each other and close the windows. If you don’t plan to ventilate the room in winter at all, all small cracks can be plugged with tow, foam rubber or cotton wool.

You can also seal the cracks with strips of white fabric. The fabric is first moistened with hot water, wrung out, and then thickly lathered with soap. If the gaps are very wide, the fabric is applied in several layers. This method has many advantages. The white fabric on the windows is practically invisible. Soap solution serves as an excellent insulator. Well, with the onset of spring, this entire structure can be easily removed. Just wet the cloth with water. The only negative is that due to temperature changes in winter, the fabric may come off, so everything will have to be redone.

Insulate windows with foam rubber

The sealing gasket does not allow cold air and street dust to pass through and provides sound insulation. Another method that housewives love is insulation with foam rubber or cotton wool. First, we fill all the cracks with these types of insulation, then glue them with strips of fabric on top. An old sheet will do for this. The width of the strips is four to five centimeters. Instead of glue, we again use regular soap. You can, of course, use paper instead of fabric, but the paper will turn yellow by the end of winter, and this is not aesthetically pleasing.

Insulate windows with paraffin

Another common method among housewives is insulation with paraffin. Take an ordinary paraffin candle and melt it in a water bath. Hot paraffin is poured into a syringe and injected into the cracks. Once frozen, paraffin becomes a reliable barrier to the cold.

Insulation of wooden windows using Swedish technology

If the main reason for the penetration of cold into the room is the doors that do not fit well together, they must be equipped with seals. Sometimes this has to be done every year due to the destruction of the material or its peeling off from the base.

Instead, we offer you another method: we insulate the windows for the winter using Swedish technology. Its essence is to use a tubular silicone or TEP (thermoplastic elastomer) seal, which differs from others in profile and method of fastening. The hollow tube is equipped with a herringbone-shaped shank, which is inserted into a specially made groove in the frame, securely locking the seal in place.

The sequence of work is as follows:

  1. Using a milling machine, make a groove 5 mm deep and no more than 3 mm wide around the perimeter of the removed sash.

Attention. The groove should go around the places where the hinges are attached, moving away from them by 1-1.5 cm.

  1. Place the shank of the seal into the groove.
  2. Using a special roller, roll the tubular part of the seal in a reverse motion to secure it in the groove. Perform fastening in small sections.

The photo shows the stage of installing the seal in the groove

  1. Hang the sash in place and adjust.

For reference. If you do not have the necessary tools and the ability to handle them, you can secure the seal using glue or a furniture stapler. But its service life in this case will be reduced.

Possible mistakes when insulating windows

How to insulate windows without making ridiculous mistakes? Let's look at it in order. Some people try to seal the cracks with painter's tape or medical tape. Of course, the patch will not come off over the winter, but it will be difficult to peel it off in the spring. Except maybe with paint. As for the tape, it will dry out in a couple of weeks, opening the cracks.

The next mistake is using self-adhesive foam tape. It is inserted between the frames. The release should be approximately thirty-five millimeters. The problem is that it is almost impossible to calculate the exact size of the gap. This is a double-edged sword. A small gap will lead to cold entering the house, a large gap will lead to poor closing of the frames.

How to insulate windows with newspaper

Old proven methods

Newspapers and cotton wool

Let's start, perhaps, with my grandmother's methods of insulating wooden windows - our ancestors did not have special means, so they more often used improvised material. First of all, ordinary newspaper was used, which was previously immersed in a container of water, soaked, after which it became completely pliable to manipulation and curled well into tubes.

It was these tubes that were placed in large cracks, and strips of paper were secured on top, in areas where the glass and frame came into contact, using a solution containing laundry soap.

Using paper strips

Today, this insulation option is considered dilapidated and not at all wear-resistant. In addition, when removing the newspaper after the end of winter, you may find that the coloring substance is separated along with the tubes, and the process of removing the newspaper is complicated by the fact that the paper has to be constantly moistened with water.

As for cotton wool, technical cotton wool is suitable, on which fabric strips dipped in soap are placed on top. As you know, cotton wool has good thermal insulation characteristics; getting it out from the inside is not at all difficult. Experts advise taking a closer look at this option for insulating wooden windows.

Insulation with cotton wool

Foam rubber and sealing cords

The method of insulating wooden frames using foam rubber came to us from Soviet times. As soon as the cold weather began, people stocked up on thin foam tapes and strips and began to insulate their homes. Indeed, foam rubber allows you to cope with the insulation of large cracks even in already dried out and slightly skewed window openings.

Insulation with foam rubber

On one side of this foam rubber there is an adhesive tape, on which it is actually fixed to the window. Complete tightness can be achieved by using paper tape (painting tape) attached over the strips. Such insulation will last no more than 1–2 seasons.

Foam seal

Window paste and putty

Another interesting method of sealing windows is using a paste that you can prepare yourself right at home. The paste is prepared using the following ingredients: 2–3 tablespoons of flour or starch, 0.5 cups of cold water, 1 cup of boiling water. Cold water is slowly added to the flour, after the mass becomes homogeneous, boiling water is added. Don't forget to stir the mixture.

Paste

After it has cooled, apply the paste onto strips of newspaper and distribute it in the cracks. The paste is stored in the refrigerator for no more than 5–7 days, after which it loses its functional characteristics.

When insulating windows, gypsum putty, diluted with water to the consistency of soft plasticine, was also successful. It is better to work with your hands; gloves will only increase the duration of the procedure, especially since the mass can be washed off your hands with ordinary running water.

We will insulate the windows with new shutters

Modern craftsmen offer to install shutters: plastic, metal or wooden. The most common method is to install roller shutters. They save about fifteen percent of heat in the house. Finally, in addition to them, you can prepare putty. Store-bought is not suitable for insulation. Painters advise making your own paste from alabaster with the addition of chalk. The proportions are two to one.

To seal the cracks between the glass and the sash, you can use transparent or white silicone sealant. So, add water to the alabaster (do not overdo it, the putty should be thick, like dough), knead, and then apply the paste into the cracks with a spatula. Remove excess with a wet cloth. The advantage of this method is that the putty is white, so no guests will see it on your windows.

In addition, you can coat the outside of the windows with another homemade coating to create maximum comfort in your home. Sift the fine sand (take 3 parts), add one part of flour to it, pour boiling water over it and mix. If it turns out a little liquid, add a little more sand. Your putty is ready. It adheres perfectly to both clean wooden surfaces and paint. Cleans with a wet cloth. When using this putty, it is better to seal the cracks with strips of cloth soaped with soap.

Another way to insulate windows

Modern companies often offer their answer to the question: how to properly insulate windows. According to their experts, this can only be done by replacing the old glass with a vacuum double-glazed window. This double-glazed window will serve you for more than forty years. But installing it will cost a pretty penny. It is much more practical to install a special heat-reflecting film in the space between the glass. Check the frames before installing it. Make sure all glass is held tightly. If you notice that they are loose in some places, treat the cracks that have appeared between the glass and the frame with silicone sealant. Ideally, use a sealant that dries transparent. If your frames have been in use for many years, reinforce their corners with metal corners.

other methods

If you have absolutely no desire to tinker with pastes, cotton wool and newspapers, you can keep your apartment warm using more modern means. Moreover, the market for household services offers a wide selection of necessary materials.

These include films, masking strips, sealants, and silicone sealants.

How to carefully and reliably insulate windows for the winter with sealant?

We use silicone sealant to fill cracks and holes. Squeeze it out using a special construction gun.

Polyurethane foam also retains heat perfectly. But it should be used to seal cracks in the window only if the window will never be opened again.

The film has proven itself very well. You can buy it at a hardware store. It is glued to the entire area of the window with tape. Ordinary polyethylene will also work well together with films. Pasted on the window, it will perfectly retain heat in the room.

Knowing how to insulate windows for the winter with your own hands, and having watched several thematic videos to be sure, you will not be afraid of the most severe frosts.
