Do-it-yourself warm floors under carpet: equipment for infrared systems under carpet

What is a mobile heated floor?

Structurally, the heater is a panel made of film, or less often fabric, measuring 60x180 cm, 200x140 cm or even 180x280 cm with a connected electrical cable and a power supply box with a temperature controller. Externally it looks like an anti-slip carpet pad for parquet.

There is a carrying case

Features of the heated floor device:

  • The heating element is made of graphite film with thin wires soldered along the panel;
  • The heat generation power is 250 W/h from one square, that is, one heated floor mat can emit 500-700 W;
  • Thanks to the built-in sensor, the surface of the heated floor film heats up to a maximum of 55°C;
  • The protection system is provided according to electrical safety class 2. This means that even if the underfloor heating panel is torn under the carpet, no one will get hurt, and, moreover, there is no threat of electric shock, like with wire heaters.

Warm floors are graphite strips soldered into panels

Important! Manufacturers of film heaters installed under the carpet claim that the heated floor reaches heating mode within a minute after it is turned on.

This type of heater was created as a mobile device, so the fabric was quite flexible and soft. It can be easily spread under any carpet or soft textile floor covering, and, if necessary, rolled up and packed in a case.

Warm floor and carpet: choosing the optimal tandem

Now let's talk about the most important thing: which warm floor to choose for carpeting.

Water heated floor

A water floor is a system of pipes through which water circulates, heated by electricity or heating. This limits the use of such heated floors in city apartments that only have centralized heating. Water floors cannot be connected to radiators! It's another matter if you live in a private house with autonomous heating. Then no one will forbid you to use water floors under carpet.

Advantages of a water floor:

gradual heating

This is very important for carpets, which (especially if they are of poor quality!) can become deformed or fall apart due to sudden changes in temperature; impossibility of burnout. The water in the heated floor pipe system is in constant motion, so overheating zones cannot appear on the carpet, leading to burnout of the material

Flaws:

  • complexity of installation;
  • raising the floor level by 10-15 cm due to the screed.

Electric heated floor

An electric heated floor heats up thanks to a cable that conducts electricity. Unlike a water floor, an electric floor can be installed in any room, independently, without the involvement of specialists.

Advantages of an electric floor:

  • uniform heating. This reduces the possibility of carpet deformation;
  • possibility of temperature adjustment. Knowing that the carpet cannot be heated above 27-30°C, set this limit on the thermostat. The floor will heat up to this temperature and will be maintained automatically;
  • ease of installation.

Flaws:

  • fast heating. A rapid increase in the temperature of the carpet leads to its damage, wear and loss of strength;
  • the occurrence of overheating zones (for example, in places where the floor comes into contact with furniture legs), leading to gradual burnout of the carpet and damage to the heating cable.
  • high power consumption.

Infrared heated floor

Infrared flooring is a type of electric heating system, but due to its unique properties, it is included in a separate group. Infrared flooring is sold in the form of rolls of double-sided film, inside of which there are heating elements - graphite strips. After connecting to electricity, the strips begin to heat up, and then emit infrared (heat) rays and warm up the finishing floor covering.

Advantages of infrared floor:

  • uniform heating, eliminating carpet deformation;
  • gentle infrared radiation, minimizing the possibility of overheating and fading of the carpet;
  • surface temperature control using a thermostat;
  • ease of installation and operation;
  • minimal power consumption.

There is only one drawback - the relatively high price.

Since this option is used most often, we attach video instructions for its installation:

Operating principle and main advantages

A warm floor under a carpet works according to the following principle: when connected to the electrical network, the built-in cables begin to heat up, transferring flows of warm air from bottom to top. As a result, the floor is always warm and feet do not get cold, which is very important for human comfort and health, especially for children.

It is worth noting that the heating mat under the carpet is completely safe; it does not heat up to high temperatures, which eliminates the possibility of burns.

Of all the undeniable advantages of mobile heated floors, I would especially like to highlight the following:

  • resistance to mechanical stress and damage;
  • Possibility of use in rooms with high humidity;
  • when heating, the air in the room does not become too dry;
  • with a heating mat of small size – energy savings;
  • the ability to use such a warm floor as the main heating system;
  • portable heated floors over carpet are easy to use;
  • no skills or expensive tools are required for installation;
  • The device does not require maintenance.

On video: the main advantages of mobile heated floors.

Water heated floor

Structurally, it is a stove with a heating circuit built into it in the form of a tube in which the coolant circulates, coming from the wiring and returning back.
This horizontal radiator is protected by a concrete screed. The coolant moves through a pressure pipe, the outlet of which is at the inlet of the heating circuit, and transfers heat to the screed as it passes through the heating circuit. The cooled water is returned to the boiler, where it is heated to the desired temperature. Advantages:

  • natural air circulation from bottom to top;
  • uniform heating of the room;
  • creating optimal humidity of air masses;
  • more usable area;
  • compatibility with a variety of floor coverings;
  • energy saving;
  • independence from electrical failures;
  • no electromagnetic radiation;
  • self-regulation of room temperature.

Flaws:

  • installation complexity;
  • complexity of calculations during installation;
  • the need to wait for complete drying of the floor - 1 month, when using a concrete-based screed;
  • the possibility of flooding if there are defects in the pipes;
  • availability of documentation allowing connection to central heating;
  • high cost.

Operating principle - the coolant moves through a pressure pipe, the outlet of which is at the inlet of the heating circuit, and transfers heat to the screed as it passes through the heating circuit

Dimensions and power

The dimensions of an electric heated floor under a carpet can be completely different. In stores you can find both large and very small mats. You should choose based on the size of the carpet itself. Most often, film heated floors under carpet are presented in two versions: 200x150 and 280x180 cm, the thickness varies between 1-6 mm. But well-known manufacturers can offer non-standard models.

In terms of energy consumption, a mobile heated floor under a carpet is practically no different from a standard analogue, which is mounted directly under the floor covering or in a screed. The average power is 250 W. If you take a heating mat with a larger area, for example, 10 m², then the numbers will turn out completely different, and there will be no talk of any profitability.

Popular brands

Products such as mobile heated floors under carpet are produced by many companies. But the most popular of them are Teplolux and Sinplain. These heaters are in demand and have excellent reviews.

Teplolux

Teplolux products allow you to achieve maximum effect on parquet, linoleum and laminates. This heater has a 2.5 m long installation wire. The heating mat is infrared and can even work on ceramic tiles. Among the advantages are easy care, since the outer layer of the mat is made on the basis of artificial felt. This heater is very easy to store – it has a compact size.

The maximum to which Teplolux products heat up is 30 degrees. This is the optimal temperature. It is recommended to place the heater under a wide variety of pile or woven carpeting.

The product line consists of ready-made samples for a wide variety of areas and rooms. There is also a series of warm mobile floors for use on loggias and balconies. The lineup is represented by models with remote controls, and there are practically no analogues on the market.

Recently, the company presented the Telolux Professional line, which embodies the latest technology, high levels of economy and efficiency.

Sinplain

Sinplen is also a popular product. The thickness of the mat is only 0.6 mm, but do not think that it is not effective at such a thickness. The company's products are manufactured in standard sizes, but any sizes can be customized. The advantage of the product is that it can work with any type of floor covering. This heated floor under the carpet, like the model from Teplolux, is equipped with a regulator that allows you to conveniently regulate the temperature.

Application (rules of use)

Many people are mistaken in thinking that a portable heated floor under a carpet can only be used in an apartment or house. It is also perfect for non-residential premises. According to manufacturers, such a heater can be used in completely unheated areas, for example, in a country house during the off-season, in a sales kiosk, utility rooms and various types of domestic premises.

So-called heated floor carpets are also on sale. They can be small in size and are ideal for drying shoes, heating the floor on a poorly insulated balcony; after all, a mini heating mat can be placed in a doghouse.

It is worth noting that with all its advantages, the heating nanocarpet has a very affordable price. On average, the price varies between 5000-6500 rubles.

As for the disadvantages, there are none, but there are some limitations in operation:

  • Film heated floors can be laid only where it is not intended to place too heavy and oversized furniture.
  • It is not recommended to cover the temperature sensor, otherwise its readings may be incorrect and the system may malfunction.
  • A mobile heated floor under a carpet can only be laid on a flat surface. If the floor is uneven, has potholes or any serious defects, there is a possibility of damage to the heating elements.

Verdict - for or against?

Undoubtedly, a mobile floor heater has many advantages and is practically free of disadvantages. It is ideal for use on winter evenings when the house is not warm enough, it will save you from such a problem as eternally icy feet, and in general, such a heated mat is necessary for every family with small children. Kids often play on the floor, and sometimes even fall asleep on it, and to avoid colds, experts strongly recommend placing a mobile heater under the carpet.

In conclusion, I would just like to note that, unlike a stationary heated floor, its mobile version can be moved from room to room or taken to the dacha or work, it is completely safe, very compact and light in weight. If, if a classic heated floor malfunctions, you have to dismantle the floor covering, then with a mobile heater everything is much simpler - significant savings on your finances.

If you have settled on this option for heated floors, then the most important thing is to make the right choice, which largely depends on the brand. The manufacturers described above have been on the market for a long time and have established themselves as some of the best in terms of high quality products.

Infrared

The most popular model among warm floor mats is infrared film.

Device

Infrared-type warm floor is a film covered with carbon strips, which are combined into blocks of 20 pieces. Heaters (carbon strips) are connected in parallel, this allows the system to function even if one unit fails.

Models are available with a continuous carbon layer. In such structures, the floor works even with a local rupture of the fabric.

Principle of operation

In this device, the heat radiator is carbon paste with carbon compounds. Heat is dissipated throughout the room using infrared rays, their length is from 5 to 20 microns.

In addition, the infrared floor design has a foil layer, which is not present in a resistive floor, which allows you to direct the waves in the desired direction.

For your information! Infrared waves have a directional effect, so they evenly warm the room.

Advantages

A warm infrared electric mat has many advantages, and many people prefer it when choosing a heating system. These include:

  • the ability to cut the film along special lines - which simplifies the installation process;
  • high level of thermal conductivity - provided by carbon;
  • efficiency - at minimal cost;
  • insignificant production of anions, which are completely absorbed by the floor covering - thus, such a warm bedding on the floor does not harm health;
  • safety - since according to technology the floor is connected to a grounded socket;
  • admissibility of interaction with any floor covering - laminate, linoleum, carpet;
  • minimum heating time - about 5 minutes;
  • destruction of microbes in the air by infrared rays;
  • The presence of a thermostat allows you to set the desired temperature.

Flaws

It is worth noting the minor disadvantages of infrared floors:

  • the design has many hidden contacts, so it is necessary to test the floor before installation;
  • high price;
  • danger of fire if installed incorrectly.

Resistive

A resistive warm mat is another model of mobile heating floors.

Device

A resistive mat is a two-layer film; the heating element is metal strips that are connected by two conductive wires.

The tracks are made of high-resistance material, which allows for rapid heating. The distance between them is less than 1 mm, so the floor warms up evenly. There is a bus on the side of the product, and power goes through it.

The substrate is a polymer, and the layer on top is a composite plastic; it tolerates mechanical stress and high temperature well. Therefore, the product can be twisted and untwisted repeatedly without harming its condition.

Principle of operation

The principle of operation of such floors is similar to cable systems. The film includes several blocks; heat is alternately transferred through them by convection.

The heating process is as follows - metal strips are heated using electricity and transfer heat to the finishing coating, which transfers it to the room.

Manufacturers

The production of mobile heated floors takes place in European countries, Russia, Ukraine and China. Domestic ones are very popular

The leader in Russian production of mobile heated floors is the Teplolux brand. Warm floors from this manufacturer have proven themselves well on various floor surfaces. A distinctive feature of the models is the front covering made of felt.

Thanks to the extended power cord (2.5 m), no additional cable connections (carriers, extension cords) are required. The power of the models ranges from 300 to 560 W. The coating is convenient to use and transport; if necessary, it can easily be folded into a bag.

Express produces flooring models designed for installation under laminate, linoleum and tiles. Places directly under the carpet; it is better to use short-pile carpets. Conveniently located in children's rooms where heating is needed in the central part of the floor covering.

Installation in hospital premises and baths is recommended. Even minimal radiation is used in medical treatment and has relaxing properties.

"Trio"

Ukrainian manufacturers produce heated floors with dimensions of 1.8 x 0.6 m. This heating model is suitable for those who need spot heating of the surface. Can be installed in bathrooms. It has an advantage over other manufacturers in a fairly low product price and lower energy consumption.

"Good warmth"

The company produces rugs measuring 80x50 cm. The main advantage of this brand is that it provides a huge range of products with different patterns and varieties of color palette.

"Warm house"

received positive reviews thanks to the production of the Viks brand. The model is a carpet mat with a double-sided color coating, which makes it possible to install it in rooms with high moisture. Installation takes a few seconds. After all, to install, you just need to lay it on the surface and connect it to the general network.

Manufacturers (review of models)

Today there are quite a few manufacturers of ultra-thin warm mats, but the most popular brands are Teplolux, Sinplain and Trio. It is the products of these manufacturers that are considered the most reliable and high quality, as evidenced by numerous reviews.

Teplolux

Teplolux brand under-carpet heaters are distinguished by their versatility. They can be laid on wooden floors, parquet, laminate, under linoleum, they will even work on ceramic tiles. The manufacturer Teplolux has Express models - these are, first of all, infrared heated floors under a carpet, which are mats based on artificial felt, and you can’t feel them at all under the carpet. They are equipped with a 2.5 m long installation cable, are compact in size and easy to maintain.

The Express also includes a special bag so you can easily carry the infrared heater to another location if necessary.

The maximum heating limit for Teplolux express heated floors is 30 degrees. This is the optimal value at which you can cover the mat with a wide variety of types of carpets. This temperature will not be dangerous for both models with long pile and woven versions made of synthetic fibers.

The Express product line includes standard 280x180 cm heated floor models, but there are options for both spacious and small rooms. In addition, all Teplolux products are equipped with remote control, and there are practically no analogues to such a system.

Not long ago, the manufacturer presented a new product from the Professional line - this is a very economical development in terms of energy consumption, and at the same time has high thermal efficiency.

Sinplain

This is another popular manufacturer, whose products are no less in demand than heated floors from Teplolux. The thickness of the Sinplen film heater is only 0.6 cm, and this does not in any way affect the quality of the product; its efficiency is quite high. Like the competitor mentioned above, this manufacturer offers floor heating mats of standard size 280x180 cm, but it is possible to make an individual order for any other sizes.

The main advantage of Sinplen products is that they can be used in conjunction with any type of floor covering. This could be a wooden floor, tiles, wooden parquet or even regular linoleum.

Trio

The trio is one of the first companies in Ukraine to successfully sell its products, including long-wave infrared heated floors. This product is equipped with a 4-stage temperature switching system and is made of material resistant to mechanical damage. The heating mat is reliably protected from moisture, does not dry out the air and does not leave burns when touched. Another plus is that the heating is adjustable, convenient packaging with a handle for easy transportation.

How to use underfloor heating correctly

The first thing you need to do is purchase several meters of reflective foil thermal insulation based on foamed polymer. This will help prevent the floor under the carpet from heating up.

For hard coverings, such as tiles or parquet, soft types of thermal insulation, isoflex, infraflex, are used. For plank floors and laminates, more rigid substrates, such as energyflex, are used.

The mobile nature of a heated floor is a huge advantage of a heating system, so you should not glue a soft polymer mat to the floor with tape. If it is vital to fix the heater to the floor, then you can use small pieces of tape at the corners, but in no case should you completely fix it with a sticker around the perimeter.

It is better to glue a warm floor on the floorboards

The warm floor is designed so that it will move on the floor covering along with the carpet. If you fix the film, the carpet or carpet base will move around the film, resulting in deep scratches and grooves.

Film flooring is easily confused with other types of heaters. There are many similar models of heaters that are mounted on the ceiling, walls, and even under the frame of the sofa. The principle of operation is the same, but they should not be laid under the carpet; such models are not designed for additional thermal insulation and the load from the carpet.

When operating the heater, you must not close the sensor box; in this case, the floor will periodically turn off without even reaching the required temperature.

In a country house, a warm floor can replace a carpet

Complete set for self-installation of IR film

It’s enough to just make a warm floor under the carpet with your own hands. You must first stock up on the following materials and equipment:

  • infrared film width from 500 to 800 mm;
  • a set of connecting clamps;
  • mastic insulator;
  • ordinary heat-insulating non-foil film;
  • two sets of vapor barrier material (for the bottom and top layers);
  • thermostat;
  • electrical connecting cord with plug.

How to assemble an IR mat

The warm floor under the carpet is assembled with your own hands on the free surface of the room. First, steam and thermal insulation materials are laid out. Using ordinary scissors, the infrared film is cut according to the selected dimensions and laid out on top of the insulation. The conductive film strips are connected in parallel, secured together with clips. All contacts must be carefully insulated with mastic glue for rigidity. The film, thermostats and electrical wire are combined into one system and connected to an outlet to test functionality. The final stage is to lay a vapor barrier on top again, then a finishing layer of carpet or just a regular rug. Warm floor under the carpet is ready for use! The top covering over the film material should not be too thick, otherwise all the heat will remain under the carpet.

Does this portable carpet provide good warmth?

Since the film itself is not a finished heating device, but only one type of material, the power of this heat source depends on the correct assembly of the “layer cake”, which is the warm floor under the carpet. Reviews in this case are clear: there is no correct assembly, which means you shouldn’t expect good heating. In order to obtain comfortable warmth in a room using only an infrared film device, you need to cover about 70% of the floor area in this way. But with proper and high-quality thermal insulation, the efficiency of such a coating will be almost 95% with minimal energy consumption. Where it is impossible or does not want to lay a complex, stationary hot floor from water heaters, a mobile system based on IR film will become a universal solution. In addition, if necessary, this system can be moved to another room, another apartment, or taken to the country.

Mobile mat - palace

The warm floor under the Teplolux carpet is a structure somewhat different from the film structure.
Its surface is made of artificial felt, which is durable and easy to clean. The canvas has certain dimensions and is available in two modifications: 2 by 1.5 m and 2.8 by 1.8 m. The basis of its heating filling is a thin cable in a protective hermetic sheath. The mat is connected to the power supply via a 2.5 meter installation wire. Such a mobile heated covering can be placed under woven, lint-free or pile carpets of medium thickness, the surface of which will be evenly heated to 35 degrees. The infrared heated floor under the carpet is connected to the electrical network using a universal plug suitable for any type of socket. The wire is fixed through the power box. The optimal temperature regime is maintained by a functional and convenient power regulator.

Heating elements under the carpet

With radiator heating, heat is distributed unevenly throughout the room. Hot air rises, cools, and sinks to the floor. The flooring remains cool.

In order to heat local areas, a “warm floor” system is installed. To do this, you need to open the floor covering, prepare the rough covering, and lay all the insulating materials.

Manufacturers of heating systems offer the use of mobile “warm floors”. It has the following structure:

  • a separate mat with a conductor built inside; it can be a cable, thread or carbon strips;
  • The coolant is protected by an additional coating from moisture penetration and prevents mechanical stress;
  • the mats are equipped with a cable that connects to the power supply via a socket or temperature control device;
  • maximum warm-up temperature 55 0C;
  • mats are placed under the carpet.

If necessary, the mat can be easily rolled up and placed in a portable bag. The system is used to heat the bedside area, under the carpet in the children's room, and in the bathroom. You can take it with you to the country house or to the office. The heater operates on a voltage of 220 V. Power is 250-300 W/h.

How to properly lay heated floors under carpet

The manufacturer's recommendations regarding the installation of infrared film heated floors under carpet have several main goals:

  1. Reduce excessive energy consumption.
  2. Prevent IR rays from spreading in unnecessary directions.
  3. Eliminate the possibility of electric shock.
  4. Increase fire safety.

Infrared floors themselves are completely safe to use. Proper installation will additionally ensure a long service life of the heating system. The work proceeds as follows:

  • Base – any flat floor will do. The only important requirement that must be strictly observed is leveling the base to zero. Any irregularities can lead to loss of film integrity.
  • Protective layer. Infrared underfloor heating will only be effective if the radiation is directed. To do this, a foil film is placed on a leveled base, which serves as a screen.
  • The film floor is laid on top of the screen, so that the connection contacts are on top.
  • Protective film – designed to prevent tearing of floors. The reinforcing fabric transmits IR rays, but prevents mechanical damage.
  • Carpet covering. Carpet can be installed on top of laminate flooring or as a separate material. Depending on the chosen coating, you will need to select a film floor of appropriate power.

The possibility of fire is reduced to zero. The maximum heating temperature is 21°C. Exposure to IR rays does not overheat the surface and does not contribute to deformation or fading.

Safety precautions when heating floors with carpet

IR heated floors can be placed under a carpet because the infrared heating system is completely safe.
To prevent electrical hazards and the possibility of fire, the following measures will be required:

  1. Grounding. All conductive elements are insulated using a special tape. Electrical tape is glued along the perimeter of the film. Additionally, grounding is connected to the thermostat.
  2. Control block. Laying a film floor under carpet requires the installation of a thermostat. The control unit helps to avoid overheating and excessive power consumption.
  3. Automation. Floors must be connected to a separate power supply branch. It is mandatory to install machines connected directly to the meter. RCDs must be installed.

You can do the installation of a film infrared heated floor under a carpet yourself. The manufacturer describes in detail the step-by-step installation of the heating system.

The efficiency and technical characteristics are influenced by proper installation and strict adherence to all recommendations. If there are doubts about the possibility of performing the work yourself, it is best to seek qualified help from specialists.

Are health benefits a myth?

Long-wave radiation is not only safe, but also beneficial for both people and plants.
Constant feeding of organisms with infrared rays helps strengthen the immune system and invigorate the body. The effect of such heat waves on a person is similar to the warmth of the sun or a hot stove. Modern medical research officially recommends the use of infrared radiation in dentistry, surgery and other fields. The use of a covering such as film heated flooring under a carpet has a beneficial effect on the health and well-being of both the elderly and children. Under the influence of infrared radiation, the development of pathogenic bacteria even in the surrounding airspace stops. By inhaling ionized air, people get rid of allergies and neurodermatitis, psoriasis and blood pressure problems.

IR rays neutralize the harmful effects of television and computer electromagnetic fields. Effects have been discovered that even suppress the growth of cancer cells. Radiation has a mild beneficial effect on healthy organisms. Warm floors (electric) under the carpet will bring exceptional benefits and comfort to your home.
