Equipment and principle of operation of gas boilers Protherm Gepard

Construction of the Cheetah boiler
A standard wall-mounted unit with two circuits is equipped with main components, software and a hydraulic group. The main elements of the boiler include:

  • membrane type expansion tank;
  • sensor that monitors water parameters in pipes;
  • hydraulic mechanisms;
  • block with electronic board;
  • burner with electric ignition system
  • electrode protection;
  • boiler;
  • turbine for turbocharged models;
  • coaxial pipe and distribution adapter.

The hydrogroup is represented by:

  • 3 atm safety valve;
  • pressure controller;
  • plate secondary boiler made of stainless steel;
  • automatic air vent;
  • valve switchable in 3 positions;
  • pump for supplying liquid to the circuit;
  • gas valve type SIT.

The system is controlled using an LCD monitor, where the main parameters are displayed. Built-in diagnostics determine the error code. Branded software allows you to operate the thermal power device in the “Eco” (heating the coolant up to 50 degrees) and “Warm Floor” modes.

Principle of operation

A double-circuit device with a turbine can be connected to heating and hot water systems. The water is heated by a plate heat exchanger. Fuel combustion products are discharged through a coaxial chimney. Oxygen is taken for the combustion reaction through forced circulation.

A modulating gas burner allows you to select the flame power when heating water and coolant. When the hot liquid valve opens, the power indicator increases and the mode switches. The operating parameters are set by the user. In the future, they can be changed automatically or adjusted mechanically.

For efficient heat transfer into closed heating, a circulation pump is additionally connected.

Wall-mounted gas boiler Proterm Cheetah , whose owner reviews help all potential buyers better decide on the choice of a mounted gas appliance, firmly occupies a high place in the ratings of heating equipment.

Modern design and quality of materials, compact dimensions and a maximum range of all necessary functions have made the Gepard model a kind of flagship in the line of mounted double-circuit gas boilers from the Slovak company Protherm.

I propose to look in more detail at the design and differences between models, technical characteristics and prices of gas boilers Protherm Gepard 23 MTV and MOV, the operating instructions for which will help us review the devices of the Slovak manufacturer.

Features of wall-mounted double-circuit gas boilers Protherm Gepard MTV and MOV

Like any European manufacturer of mounted gas boilers, it produces several models in the “Gepard” line. Let's figure out how they differ and what makes them special.

Gas boilers Proterm Gepard
All Gepard boilers have two circuits and two heat exchangers for each of these circuits: the main copper one for heating, and the secondary one for domestic hot water, made of stainless steel.
An important distinctive feature of boilers in this series is the rapid heating of running water (no more than 2 seconds) in a secondary plate heat exchanger. Double-circuit gas boilers "Gepard" are produced only in Slovakia and only in two versions:

— with a closed combustion chamber Gepard MTV; — with an open chamber (atmospheric) Gepard MOV.

Until 2015, devices in this series had a small display, and the power of the boilers produced was 11 and 23 kW. Since 2015, the company has modernized the Gepard series wall-mounted boilers, replacing the digital display with a brighter and more informative one, installing a new hydraulic group made of higher quality composite materials and an improved SIT gas valve.

In addition, the power of the new boilers became 12 and 23 kW. For example, the Protherm Gepard 23 MTV gas boiler is a double-circuit gas boiler with a closed combustion chamber (with a turbine) with a power of 23-24 kW, and the Protherm Gepard 12 MOV boiler is a double-circuit gas boiler with an open combustion chamber (natural draft) with a power of 12 kW.

Gas boiler Prothem Gepard 23 MTV: instructions and device

This device with two heat exchangers includes a reliable two-speed circulation pump Grundfos , a pneumatic gas valve SIT , a gas boiler burner made of chromium-nickel steel, and a 5-liter membrane expansion tank.

Let's look at the photo diagram of the device and connection of the gas mounted boiler "Protherm Gepard 23 MTV".

2 - water pressure sensor; 3 - hydraulic group of the boiler; 4 - electrical unit with electrical board; 5 — burner ignition electrode; 6 — control electrode; 7 - gas burner of the boiler; 8 - main heat exchanger; 9 - turbine (fan). Double-circuit mounted heating boilers Protherm Gepard 12 and 23 MTV with a closed combustion chamber and forced draft can be used either with a 60/100 mm coaxial pipe “pipe in pipe” through the wall, or with a system of separate pipes through a chimney duct separator - an 80/80 adapter mm.

Protherm strongly recommends using only its own chimneys to maintain the warranty on the equipment itself.

A modern information LCD display reflects the user-set temperature in the heating and hot water circuits. In addition, it shows various error codes in case of malfunctions or breakdowns of the device. It is possible to enable the economical “Eco” mode on the control panel, in which the coolant temperature will not exceed 50 degrees, as well as the “warm floors” mode.

A room thermostat for setting the operating mode of the unit depending on the air temperature in the house is not included in the package of the “wall unit”, but is an option that can be purchased and connected separately.

The circulation pump has an automatic air vent and a post-circulation function that protects the pump from jamming. The hydraulic group of the Gepard 2015 boiler is made of higher quality materials than those of the devices of the previous series. Let's take a closer look at it.

Protherm Cheetah 23 mtv

Let's take a closer look at the Protherm Cheetah 23 mtv boiler.
This is one of the most popular models of wall-mounted gas boilers. They are in demand both among owners of private houses and apartment owners in the city. This boiler attracts attention due to its excellent technical characteristics and relatively low cost in comparison with other Protherm products.

Technical characteristics of the product Protherm Cheetah 23 mtv:

  • installation type: wall-mounted;
  • hot water supply: yes;
  • maximum power: 23.3 kW;
  • combustion chamber: closed (mtv).

As for the combustion chamber, they are either closed or open. Closed chambers are designated in the name of the boiler by the letters mtv, and open chambers by the letters mov.

Gepard series boilers come in both types. However, the greatest convenience is caused by the combustion chamber - mtv, because it allows you to install the device in any room. The fact is that the closed type of chamber does not have a chimney. This is achieved using a coaxial exhaust gas system, that is, a double pipe is used here. This allows you to simultaneously draw in air from the street and remove combustion products.

Installing a wall-mounted or mounted Protherm Cheetah 23 mtv model is very inexpensive and quick , because it is a chimneyless boiler. For hot water supply, water is heated in the range of 38–60 degrees, and for heating in the region of 38–80 degrees. If there is a problem with water hardness, the product can quickly become clogged, which will lead to an unexpected shutdown, loss of hot water and knocking. Therefore, you should immediately install a filter.

The cost of the Protherm Cheetah 23 mtv product is not much more expensive than economy class heating equipment. However, it is distinguished by good assembly and service life , and is also repairable. An important point is the installation of the unit, since incorrect self-configuration can lead to a malfunction in the system. Therefore, it is better to seek help from a specialist.

Advantages and disadvantages

The heat exchanger is made of durable material.
Boiler equipment of the Gepard brand has several advantages:

  • heat exchangers made of cast iron – the heat capacity characteristics of the material ensure the quality of heating;
  • maintaining a comfortable temperature for a long time;
  • the presence of automatic control mechanisms;
  • build quality and many features;
  • extensive product range;
  • accessibility – devices belong to the middle price segment;
  • availability of self-diagnosis options with error code output;
  • compatibility with Russian climatic conditions.

Among the disadvantages are:

  • drop in heating main temperature with increasing hot water consumption;
  • Warranty service only when installed by Gepard specialists;
  • high gas consumption when turned on at minimum power.

Boilers are universal - they can be installed in a private home, utility room, or in production.

Rules for installing a gas boiler

Piping diagram
The use of boiler heaters is a closed system with a forced circulation type, working to heat the room and hot water. When installing structures, it is required to comply with the manufacturer's technical regulations:

  1. Selecting the distance from the boiler to the surface. Wall models are removed 50 cm from the ceiling and 80 cm from the floor.
  2. Fastening a 3 mm thick metal sheet to the wall for equipment.
  3. Preparing the electrical cable and organizing the grounding line.
  4. Drilling holes for fasteners according to the mounting template.
  5. Connecting the complete threaded fitting to the gas pipeline.
  6. Checking the amount of volume of the built-in tank. If there is a shortage, install an additional tank next to the boiler.
  7. Installation of a check valve in case of connecting a second tank.
  8. Flushing the line and removing air from it.
  9. Connecting a shut-off valve and check valve to the cold water pipes.
  10. Installation of a filter at the inlet to the DHW system.
  11. Installation of gas meter, stabilizer and circuit breaker.
  12. Connecting electrical elements - wires into plug terminals, plugs into the board socket.
  13. Securing cables using clamps.

Commissioning of the device is carried out only by a specialist with a Protherm certificate.

Setting up and adjusting the power of a gas boiler when operating on antifreeze

Traditional antifreezes based on ethylene glycol or propylene glycol have a higher viscosity compared to water. As a result, the movement of coolant through the boiler heat exchanger slows down. In addition, antifreezes have a lower heat capacity. All this leads to the fact that the antifreeze in the boiler heat exchanger, which is designed for water, at maximum power instantly heats up to the boiling point and boils. Boiling of antifreeze, as a result of local overheating in the heat exchanger, manifests itself in the form of loud noise, roaring and gurgling.

A gas boiler, when operating on antifreeze, can only operate at a reduced power, lower than that specified in the boiler instructions for water.

To slightly increase the power of a boiler running on antifreeze, it is recommended to dilute the antifreeze with water and also increase the pressure of the circulation pump.

For example, for heating systems with wall-mounted gas boilers, it is recommended to dilute the contents of the original packaging with water in a ratio of 1:1. As a result of diluting the antifreeze, the temperature at which crystallization begins will increase from -30 °C

to minus 10 °C.

If the crystallization temperature of diluted antifreeze is not satisfactory, then select another antifreeze.

In any case, to prevent overheating of the heat exchanger, in the settings of the service menu and gas valve it is necessary to limit the boiler power in heating mode (in lines d.00 and d.52 of the service menu), and also set the maximum coolant temperature no higher than +70 °C, (in line d.71 of the service menu). It is also recommended to increase the response pressure of the bypass valve on the boiler (how? - read below).

The boiler manufacturer usually gives its recommendations on the choice of antifreeze in the operating instructions. So, for Protherm gas boilers, the instructions say: “It is not recommended to use non-freezing liquids in heating systems with Protherm equipment installed. The use of non-freezing liquids entails a decrease in the efficiency of heat exchange, higher surface temperatures on the walls of the heat exchanger and its rapid wear, an increase in the corrosive effect and viscosity, corrosion of gaskets and fittings, both in the boiler itself and in the heating system. A boiler malfunction associated with the use of non-freezing liquids will result in a warranty denial.”

User manual

Control panel
A user manual is supplied with the unit. The document contains the basic rules for operating the boiler:

  • If there is a burning smell in the room, do not turn on the lights, smoke, or use the phone. The device is immediately turned off from the network, and the boiler room is ventilated.
  • There must be a place for servicing next to the device. A gap of 30 cm is needed above and below the structure. 10 cm remains on the side and 60 cm near the front.
  • When leaving for a long time, the valves for heating, hot water supply and gas supply are closed.
  • The recommended coolant pressure is from 1 to 2 bar.
  • Explosive and flammable substances and paint and varnish products must not be stored near the boiler.
  • To select the heating mode, press MODE. To go to “Summer” - the same button twice, to “Vacation” - three times.
  • Water temperature parameters are adjusted using the plus and minus keys.
  • To set the temperature indicator of the heating main, you will need to press MODE, and then “plus” or “minus”.

Operation of the device is prohibited if the system is defrosted or there is a coolant leak.

Instructions for setting up, connecting and starting

After delivery of the boiler, it is installed on a pre-selected surface. The delivery set includes a special bracket that is mounted on a solid wall. Installation on surfaces covered with plasterboard, thin or temporary partitions with low load-bearing capacity is not allowed.

After installation, all relevant pipelines are connected:

  • Gas supply.
  • Forward and return lines of the heating circuit.
  • Cold water supply.

Work on connecting all communications must be carried out carefully, in compliance with all technology requirements.

Gas pipe connections are checked for leaks using a soap solution. After this, the boiler is connected to the power supply network.

It is necessary to control the correct connection of the phase to the corresponding electrode, otherwise the boiler will not start.

Filling with water is carried out until the nominal pressure is obtained, which is shown on the display.

The feed tap opens and the system is slowly filled with water so that air has time to escape. After this, the air pockets in the boiler itself and radiators are released, after which the pressure is adjusted again.

The first start of the boiler is a short-term switching on of the unit to check the functionality and correctness of the connection and settings. Detected malfunctions are immediately eliminated, loose connections are carefully sealed.

Sometimes the first launch is immediately interrupted with an error. This is a consequence of an air lock in the pump or other component.

The error is reset and the attempt is repeated again. Sometimes the first start must be repeated several times until the air leaves the pump. .

NOTE! The connection and first start-up must be carried out by service center employees who will correctly set the boiler system settings. Self-tuning and starting the boiler will automatically cancel the warranty agreement and service will be refused.

Major breakdowns

If the device malfunctions, a code is displayed on the LCD display, which identifies the error. The algorithm for working with it is presented in the instructions. Other common hardware failures include:

  • breakdowns of pressure, temperature sensors, gas control valves;
  • malfunction of the gas supply system or ionizing valve;
  • chimney blocked - no air supply;
  • stop when the network voltage drops;
  • short circuits – sensors of the water supply circuit, housing, pressure switch;
  • formation of air jams;
  • problems with the software - the water is heated, but the circuit is not heated.

Error codes can be resolved according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Faulty parts will need repair.
