Model of heating equipment Hearth
Devices of this brand are made of steel and are most effective when heating rooms up to 250 m². These are products of Gazstroy LLC, they are considered one of the best among local analogues.
Solid fuel boilers Hearth come in three models:
- New
- Standard
- With heating elements
Since all devices from this manufacturer are universal, they are equipped with gas burners.
The solid fuel boiler Ochag has only positive reviews, despite the fact that it is still only 2 years old. It has a modern design and is equipped with a traction control.
Standard equipment is divided into single and double circuit. The latter are equipped with a coil. Their power varies from 6 to 31 kW.
The modern modification is equipped with two special holes for heating elements and has an elongated firebox designed for firewood.
But their greatest advantage is the ability to switch to another type of fuel - gas. So, when connecting the main line, there is no need to change the boiler; it will be enough to install an appropriate gas burner in it.
What to look for when choosing?
When choosing a TKDG, the main attention should be paid to the following characteristics:
- Type of fuel . The units can be designed for a specific fuel or be universal. Main options: coal, firewood, peat, pellets.
- Boiler power . It determines the heated area. For domestic needs, usually does not exceed 100 kW.
- Number of circuits : single-circuit or double-circuit.
- Loading chamber volume . The duration of operation without new fuel loading depends on it.
- Cost-effectiveness , i.e. fuel consumption. The main indicator is efficiency.
- Durability or service life.
- Control systems : electronic or mechanical.
- Safety . Critical protection systems must be provided.
- Price.
You should also pay attention to the material of the body and combustion chamber, loading method (manual, automatic, semi-automatic), volatility, weight and dimensions.
Stropuva S20U
at a price of RUB 117,760.
The original design of the Stropuva S20U model, originally from Lithuania, ensures that one load of fuel burns for up to 120 hours.
Unlike most solid fuel boilers, here the fuel burns from top to bottom, and not vice versa. There is layer-by-layer combustion of coal, pellets, briquettes or firewood with air supplied to the combustion area. This approach, in addition to a long laying interval, guarantees economical fuel consumption and an efficiency of 85%. If you plan to work only with wood, then the product will be completely energy independent. To burn coal, it is necessary to use a fan for forced air injection; accordingly, such a modification requires a connection to the network. It works best when using high-calorie coal. Up to 116 kg of such fuel is placed in the combustion chamber, while firewood is about 54 kg. The manufacturer especially emphasizes the need to install the product by specialists, because independent installation does not always take into account all the nuances and, as a result, the coolant boils and other unpleasant consequences. Operating principle of TKDG
Long-term combustion in a TKDG furnace can be ensured in 2 ways:
- Top combustion principle . In the combustion chamber, the fuel does not burn, but smolders with limited access to oxygen. The cylindrical firebox is located at the top of the unit and has a cylindrical shape. The gas released during smoldering enters the afterburning chamber, where a supply of atmospheric oxygen is ensured for its complete combustion. As a result, almost complete combustion of the fuel occurs with the active release of thermal energy.
- Pyrolysis principle . The combustion chamber is located at the bottom. Active smoldering of fuel also occurs here with limited access to oxygen. The combustible gas rises up and reaches the second chamber, where, enriched with oxygen, it burns completely.
Thus, the duration of combustion is ensured by the two-chamber design of the unit, when the fuel slowly smolderes in the firebox, and the released combustible gases burn in the second chamber.
Prometheus brand equipment
Russian long-burning solid fuel boilers are produced by various manufacturers. But not all of them can claim to be a leading production company, like Sibenergotherm.
It produces the Prometheus solid fuel boiler with a power of up to 45 kW. Which can be used for heating even production workshops up to 450 m² in size.
The main type of fuel for them is coal. But in comparison with other models, they are small in size, economical in wood consumption, and energy independent.
The range of such devices is equipped with a volumetric loading chamber, which ensures long-term operation. Made of steel with anti-corrosion treatment, the Prometheus solid fuel boiler has reviews that speak of its reliability and efficiency.
A functional feature of the device is the significant external area of the heat exchanger, which is encircled by hot exhaust gases and flame, which guarantees high heat transfer and makes it possible to achieve high efficiency. Thermal insulation of the front walls of the boiler also contributes to an increase in this indicator.
Loading firewood is done manually, and while the lower logs are burning, the upper layers dry out, which also increases efficiency. For ignition, the combustion damper opens, which leads to increased draft. It is closed after the combustion chamber has warmed up, and then the boiler operates as usual.
The ash drawer has a convenient design and can be easily removed, which greatly simplifies its cleaning. The device also includes the necessary accessories for this:
- Poker
- Scoop
The use of only high-quality materials in the manufacture of the device has significantly increased its service life. Its heat exchanger is made of boiler steel, and in areas exposed to the greatest heating, there is a refractory brick that can withstand up to 1800º C. This prevents the walls of the heat exchanger from burning out.
The device control system does not depend on electricity. It is equipped with a thermostat that controls the degree of opening of the damper. The presence of branch pipes on both lines allows the device to be used in various heating systems. And ease of operation makes it possible to use industrial solid fuel boilers in the most remote villages.
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages of the boilers under consideration:
- high efficiency exceeding 90%;
- accessible and fairly cheap fuel;
- ease of installation, management and operation;
- almost complete combustion of combustion products;
- increased durability;
- affordable price.
Some disadvantages of TKDG should also be noted:
- the need for a separate room for installation;
- the need for periodic ash removal;
- arrangement of a storage facility for fuel supplies.
In budget designs, fuel is loaded manually, which can also be attributed to the disadvantages of such equipment.
Zota
Zota solid fuel boilers are produced in Krasnoyarsk. The products of the Krasnoyarsk plant are familiar to customers with brands such as Dymok and Zota Mix.
They have proven themselves well and users speak well of the quality of operation of such devices.
Fuel loading in these units can be carried out both vertically and horizontally, and they also have a power control panel.
Solid fuel boilers ZOTA "Dymok-M"
Main advantages:
- high efficiency - up to 80%;
- efficiency;
- you can change the fuel;
- equipped with electrical control of combustion temperature and power;

- affordable price.
All of the above advantages of the functioning of Zota boilers characterize the products of this company only on the positive side.
Water circuit
To ensure autonomous hot water supply, in addition to the heating system, TKDG with a water circuit or double-circuit boilers are installed. Such units have 2 independent circuits for water circulation. An additional heat exchanger acts as a boiler and is intended only for heating water.
If the TKDG is connected to the water supply network, then water circulation through both circuits is ensured without forced supply, i.e. due to pressure in the water supply. When there is no centralized coolant supply, a storage tank is needed. It contains the necessary supply of water to meet demand.
The tank is usually installed above the boiler. A number of unit models have a built-in expansion tank. Forced water supply is provided by a circulation pump.
Protherm Beaver 20 DLO
This boiler is equipped with a spacious combustion chamber and a cast iron heat exchanger. Used for industrial and residential premises with an area of up to 200 sq.m. Allows you to connect a boiler. The warranty period is 10 years. The externally attractive body is covered with heat-resistant, red enamel. Works on wood and coal. The unit is equipped with:
- Built-in sensors on the body;
- Pressure gauge to control water heating;
- A thermomechanical power regulator that determines the water heating temperature and adjusts the air supply;
- A chimney damper that allows boiler inspection.
Can maintain stable temperature conditions. Has class 1 for efficiency and emissions. Among the advantages are operational efficiency, low heat losses, good efficiency, and wear resistance. Among the disadvantages, users highlight the specifics of traction control and cleaning.
Installation, maintenance and repair of the boiler must only be carried out by specialists!
How is the boiler power selected?
Accurate calculation of the required boiler power for heating a house is quite complicated. A simple technique is usually used: to heat an area of 10 m2, 1 kW of thermal energy is needed.
For unforeseen cases, a reserve of 10-15% of power is created. When using a water circuit or installing an additional boiler, additional energy of about 25-30% is required.
Climatic conditions make their own adjustments. In cold regions, where the air temperature can drop below minus 30 degrees, TKDG is selected at the rate of 1.6-2 kW per 10 m2 of room area. For the southern regions of the country, the requirement can be reduced: 0.8-0.9 kW per 10 m2.
What to consider?
Every major manufacturer of heating equipment, from the Russian Zota to the German Buderus, has in its arsenal several models of solid fuel boilers.
Visually, they may be practically indistinguishable from each other, but the devil is in the details. To avoid being among the victims of unscrupulous sellers, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the table below. Here you will find the main characteristics to consider when choosing the heart of your heating system. As a small note: we are considering only classic boiler designs that run on solid fuel. Read separately about pyrolysis models. Main selection criteria
Characteristic | Meaning | Note |
Thermal power, kW | on average for household needs - from 10 to 50 | In the simplest calculations, it is assumed that heating 10 m² requires 1 kW of heat*. Manufacturers often indicate different power values for lighting with coal and wood, because the specific calorific value of these types of fuel is different. If the coal is of high quality, it provides more energy. |
Efficiency, % | up to 92, but on average – 75-85 | The higher the efficiency, the more efficiently the heat of combustion of the fuel is used, and the lower its consumption. The value depends on the design of the heat exchanger, including the area of the jacket through which the coolant circulates. |
Fuel | firewood |
|
coal, coke |
| |
universal | Works on any solid fuel. The cost is higher than for the above solutions.
Loading fuel | vertical | Loading fuel from above is typical for coal and universal units. |
frontal | Side loading is convenient when using firewood. Facilitates installation maintenance.
Heat exchanger material | steel |
|
cast iron |
| |
Number of circuits | 1 | Single-circuit models heat water for the heating system, while double-circuit models also heat water for hot water supply. |
2 | ||
The combustion chamber | open | In an open chamber, natural draft is used, in a closed chamber, forced draft is used, using a fan. Air injection increases the efficiency of the system, but makes it energy dependent. |
closed | ||
Additional options | automation | Automated systems only require the user to add fuel and clean the boiler. |
cooling circuit | In conventional models, when the coolant temperature exceeds a safe threshold, the device is switched to smoldering mode - the access of air to the firebox is blocked. Because of this, the temperature may rise another 4-10 degrees by inertia, and the water will boil. The presence of a cooling circuit allows you to quickly adjust the temperature of the coolant. |
* This is an approximate value for central Russia, provided that there are no obvious heat leaks in the house and all enclosing structures are reliably insulated. For southern latitudes the value decreases to 0.6-0.9 kW, while for northern latitudes it increases to 1.3-2 kW per 10 m².

It effectively heats residential and non-residential premises. Can be used as backup heating in private sector areas.
Review of domestically produced boilers
The growth in demand for solid fuel boilers was facilitated by the development of pellet production in Russia. Pellet granules, made from pressed wood chips, are a cylinder with a diameter of 6 to 10 mm and a length of up to 30 mm.
Thanks to grinding and pressing (the press develops a pressure of up to 300 atm) of the source material, pellets with the same mass occupy a much smaller volume than conventional fuel and burn with virtually no residue. And the granular format of this fuel makes it possible to automatically supply it through screw and piston feeders. At the same time, the volumetric fuel consumption is so low that one refueling of a standard size bunker is enough for a whole week of operation of the unit.
Solid fuel boiler START
- The most popular Russian-made pellet solid fuel heating boiler is manufactured. A characteristic “trick” of this manufacturer is the bright orange color of the body, for which people began to call the boiler “orange”. The unit is equipped with an electronic control system and is even equipped with a display that displays information about the operating mode and condition of the boiler.
- Start boilers are also designed for the use of pellets, but the design of these units allows the use of any other type of solid fuel. While other solid fuel boilers made in Russia are mostly loaded from above, in “Starts” the feeding conveyor is located horizontally. This design is more tolerant of fuel with an uneven fraction and can work with it stably, without blockages and jamming.
- Boilers of the “Elephant” Trademark, which are also of domestic origin, have many advantages. The main one can be considered a surprisingly high efficiency - in the range of 95% - 97%. This efficiency was achieved thanks to the special design of the firebox and the surrounding water jacket. The service life declared by the manufacturer is 25 years.
- Russian-made pyrolysis boilers, also called gas generator or long-burning boilers, are also well represented on the market. Given the limited scope of the article, we will only talk about a few brands.
How to choose a solid fuel boiler
A solid fuel, floor-mounted or wall-mounted boiler is an effective way to create comfortable conditions in a private home. Wood and coal are cheaper than diesel, gas or electricity. Solid fuel boilers create heat no worse than gas boilers. When choosing, take into account the percentage of efficiency, type of fuel, heat exchanger material, its purpose, dependence on electricity, fuel supply and ignition. Boilers operate on wood, coal, briquettes, coke or peat. After the fuel has been used up, the unit is cleaned from coal ash - once a day, from briquettes - once a month. According to their purpose, boilers are divided into single- and double-circuit. The former are connected to the boiler, the latter are used for space heating and hot water supply. Solid fuel boilers are:
- traditional;
- pellet;
- long burning;
- pyrolysis.
Traditional ones are similar to a stove, equipped with a window for supplying fuel, a chimney and a firebox. The heart of such a furnace is the heat exchanger. It transfers thermal energy to the coolant. Heat exchangers are made of cast iron or steel.
Pellet stoves are equipped with a hopper and automatic fuel supply. Wood pellets are most often used. Pellet stoves do not require constant monitoring. They are easy to maintain. The duration of operation is limited by the dimensions of the fuel supply hopper. The front wall is equipped with instrumentation and automation. Long-burning stoves are distinguished by their air supply. The fuel burns only in the upper part of the boiler, the remaining part is consumed gradually.
Pyrolysis furnaces are multiphase. First, they dry the wood, then degassing and direct combustion occur. The fan regulates the direction of the fire. Oxygen is supplied on a constant basis. Combustible gases are completely oxidized. Such boilers have the highest percentage of efficiency. Fuel supply can be manual (firewood) or automatic (coal, pellets). If it is possible to purchase cheap fuel, it is recommended to buy a universal boiler. If you have free time, choose traditional ovens. Pyrolysis and long-burning units are suitable for large rooms. Before purchasing a boiler, you should pay attention to the draft in the chimney. If there is insufficient draft, it is better to consider models with additional ventilation.
Stropuva Mini S8
This wood-burning boiler is suitable for heating small houses, cottages and baths. Does not require a specially equipped room such as a furnace or boiler room. A small volume of fuel storage saves money. The burning period of one wood stack is 30 hours, and that of a briquette is 48 hours.
Structurally, the oven consists of two heat-insulated cylinders of different sizes. The coolant is heated between them. Inside the small cylinder there is a combustion zone. It is accessed through the cabinet door. Combustion occurs only in the upper part of the fuel fill. During its combustion, the air distributor smoothly moves down to the combustion center. The temperature of the coolant is controlled by a bi-thermal draft regulator, which does not require power supply and increases the efficiency of the furnace. The boiler operates autonomously, without additional electronics and automation.
