Infrared quartz heaters are designed as follows:

  • Heating element - made of an alloy of chromium and nickel. Quartz sand provides protection from the external environment and increased heat transfer. The heating element is placed in the lamp bulb or placed in a monolithic quartz slab.

Diffuser - behind the flask or plate, there is a metal plate that plays the role of a kind of mirror. Infrared rays are reflected from the surface, which provides directional radiation.

Thermostat - allows you to reduce the cost of heating the room by 30-40%. Some models operate in completely autonomous mode, thanks to the built-in control unit; others require a thermostat to be connected. To increase safety, the heaters are equipped with sensors that protect the surface from overheating.

Cost-effectiveness, safety and long service life are made possible thanks to the use of quartz filler. It was observed that sand heats up quickly and retains heat even after the heating source is turned off.

Heater models based on quartz sand, after switching on, reach operating power in about 20 minutes. The temperature of the heating element reaches 95°C.

Heating element design

Convectors from almost all manufacturers have a similar heating element, which is based on an incandescent filament. This can be a tungsten filament (the most durable and efficient in terms of heat generation), nichrome (cheaper, less durable and effective) or steel (the simplest, bulkiest and has the shortest service life).

Steel spirals are practically not used in convectors due to their bulkiness, but can be used in other devices. The first two types, on the contrary, are widely used in the production of convectors, and regardless of the material of the heating coil, the technical documentation indicates that the material is tungsten.

It is impossible for the average person to distinguish one material from another without special laboratory instruments, which is what sellers use. But there is still one indirect sign. This is the service life and warranty period of the heater. Since tungsten is a very refractory material, it has a much longer service life as a heating element than nichrome. Modern NOBO electric convectors, which use tungsten filament, have a warranty period of 10 and sometimes 12 years, and a service life of 30 years. A nichrome spiral will not work that long.

Leaving the filament open to contact with air guarantees the effect of “burning oxygen,” and the high temperature of the filament will ensure rapid “drying of the air.” To avoid this, the filament is placed in a tube. The space between the tube and the thread is filled with quartz sand. To increase heat transfer from such a heating element, the tube itself is made into a single stamped or solid piece with fins. It is the fins that provide a larger area of ​​heat exchange between the electric heater and the air and, accordingly, faster heating of the room.

The one-piece design of the tube and fins completely eliminates cracking due to linear expansion of the metal during heating and cooling. Aluminum alloys are used as materials for these elements as they are the most efficient in terms of heat transfer.

The design of the heating element is not always solid. Often, for reasons of economy, a tube is used from one material, and fins from another. Different linear expansions of materials often lead to their movement relative to each other, which can cause slight crackling sounds.

The heating element of quartz heaters is designed somewhat differently. Most often, a nichrome filament is also used in its manufacture. Under the influence of electric current, it heats up, increasing the temperature of the heater body. Moreover, the heating element is located over the entire surface of the device and there may be a small air gap between them.

The body of such a heater is made of quartz. Considering the principle of operation, the entire design of the device can be called a heating element. Any device that heats up as an electric current passes through it can be used as a heating element. Thus, there are quartz heaters where an IR emitter is used as a heating element, which heats the intermediate surface using infrared rays. This could be the outer casing of the heater or any reflective surface that heats the air. For this reason, such a heater can also be called infrared, since the principle of its operation is based on infrared radiation.

Monolithic

The design of a monolithic quartz heater consists of a tungsten filament, laid “snake” evenly over the area and poured into a slab made of a special compound based on quartz sand. The device is energy saving and reliable. When an electric current is connected to the contacts of the heater, the filament glows and transfers thermal energy to the stove. The surface of the slab gives off heat, the block itself plays the role of an energy accumulator (a type of hot brick). Thus, a monolithic quartz heater is one of the types of convector.

Heat is distributed from the device according to the principle of moving heated air and replacing it with a colder flow coming from below. The movement of air masses is a constant cycle - warm air rises to the ceiling, is displaced by new portions coming from the device, moves to the other end of the room, cools down and comes back to the heater, after which the cycle repeats.

The disadvantage of such a device is that the smallest particles of dust, various suspensions and microbes move along with air currents, so it is recommended to keep the room clean and ventilate it more often.

Monolithic heaters are installed in the lower tiers of the room so as not to accumulate warm air under the ceiling. There are floor-mounted and wall-mounted options for devices that are convenient from a practical point of view. The plate has a thickness of 2.5 cm, with dimensions of 60 by 35 cm.

Two main types of heaters that fit the definition of “quartz”

First, you need to decide what is generally meant by the term quartz heaters. And here a “surprise” will immediately await us - it turns out that this name combines two categories of heating electrical appliances. It is interesting that they even received the name “quartz” according to completely different evaluation criteria. And in their fundamental design, in the method of heat transfer, and in the basic rules of installation and operation, there are more differences than similarities.

Yes, the heat transfer used in both cases is based on infrared radiation. But, firstly, it varies significantly in wavelength and, accordingly, in its external perception by a person. And secondly, in one of the cases such radiation is, in fact, the only way of heat transfer, and in the other it is also combined with direct heat exchange, creating, among other things, convection air flows.

So, the concept of household quartz heaters is usually understood as the following devices:

An infrared device in which the main elements are heaters in a tubular housing made of quartz glass.

  • Devices, the main working unit of which is a heating element enclosed in a sealed tube made of transparent quartz glass. The remaining parts of the device are mainly designed to focus and transmit infrared radiation generated by the quartz element in a given direction. For such pronounced features, such devices are often called reflectors.

  • Household appliances, which are a solid panel on a quartz base, inside which is a conventional resistive heating element.

As you can see, there are very few similarities between the devices, and the name “quartz” has completely different “origins”. Therefore, further consideration will have to be carried out for each category separately.
