Gas heater for a summer residence: advantages and disadvantages

If you do not live at your dacha permanently, but only occasionally go there to relax for a few days, then natural gas heaters for your home will be the best solution to the heating issue. They have an affordable price, are very mobile and are capable of heating fairly large rooms.

The design of a gas heater involves the use of natural gas as a power source. As a result of combustion, it releases heat, which, together with infrared radiation, is transferred to surrounding objects. In turn, they give off the resulting heat to the air.

A gas heater can heat a fairly large room.

Advantages of using household gas heaters for a summer residence:

  • high efficiency, which reaches 80%;
  • to power the equipment, only natural gas or liquefied propane is required, which can be called practically the most affordable option that exists today;
  • such heaters are environmentally friendly;
  • due to its light weight and dimensions, the device can be easily transported;
  • the equipment is extremely easy to install and operate;
  • service life is quite long: from 15 to 30 years;
  • high level of safety: the housing does not heat up above 60°C, which eliminates the risk of burns or fire;
  • This heating method is very economical, since the gas cylinder can be refilled at any gas station, and fuel consumption occurs gradually.

When heating with a heater, warm air circulates inside the room

All these qualities make gas heaters for the home almost irreplaceable. After all, on the one hand, you get rid of the need to install an expensive and complex heating system, and on the other hand, you provide yourself with a reliable and compact heat source.

Among the disadvantages of this type of equipment, only two significant points can be noted:

  1. In order to release heat into the environment, gas devices require oxygen. As a result, in the room where such a device is installed, oxygen burning will occur quite quickly.
  2. No matter how hard you try, gas heaters using bottled gas for a summer residence will never become absolutely safe from the point of view of the likelihood of fire. One way or another, we are talking about the use of an explosive substance that can lead to a fire. Therefore, it is necessary to strictly follow the operating rules.

For normal operation of a gas heater, it is necessary to ensure constant access of oxygen.

These disadvantages, although significant, have virtually no impact on the popularity of this type of device. After all, if you provide additional oxygen access to the room where the heater is installed, and also follow the operating rules specified by the manufacturer, then you will get a convenient and functional device that will serve for quite a long time.

The main criteria for choosing a gas heater

  1. First of all, you should decide on the purpose. If we are talking about heating a room, then you should pay attention to the maximum power. The performance of the device depends on it. It is generally accepted that 1 kW of thermal power can cope with heating an area of 10 square meters. m.
  2. Much depends on the time a person spends in the room.
    When people periodically enter a heated room, catalytic heaters can be used. They are able to burn exhaust gases on the surface of the catalyst, which makes their operation silent and safe.
  3. If you need to regularly heat your living space
    , especially where there are children, it is better to use wall-mounted convectors. To install them, you will have to make a hole in the wall to intake air and remove combustion products.
  4. In garages or on the streets,
    ceramic models that emit infrared radiation are good sources of heat. With this heating method, it is not the air that is heated, but the objects around it.
  5. On a hike
    you can’t do without a compact heater that can be used for cooking. It should be light and compact, but at the same time productive. After all, the heat quickly leaves the tent.

Our review includes the best gas heaters. The rating was compiled taking into account the following criteria:

  1. appointment;
  2. specifications;
  3. price;
  4. expert opinion;
  5. consumer reviews.

Differences from gasoline and multi-fuel models

Gas appliances are the most common, but not the only type of catalytic equipment. Heating units can also operate on other types of fuel.

Depending on this criterion, three more types of devices are distinguished:

  1. Gasoline. Devices with a built-in fuel tank connected to a catalytic cartridge. Gasoline vapors in them enter the cartridge and undergo oxidation when interacting with the catalyst. Mobility and modest size contribute to the particular popularity of gasoline heaters among outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, and fishermen.
  2. On technical alcohol. Designs with a special internal compartment into which a container with alcohol or dry fuel is placed. They are presented in small-sized models weighing no more than 1.5-2 kg. They are used exclusively in field conditions: they heat tents, dry clothes, and heat food and drink.
  3. Multi-fuel. Universal heaters that work with any available type of fuel, both gaseous and liquid. They are characterized by rather limited power - 500-1200 W.

Apart from external characteristics, there are no significant differences between gas, gasoline and multi-fuel catalytic heaters. They all work on the principle of catalytic combustion and have a similar internal structure.

The main advantages of gasoline and multi-fuel models are mobility, compact dimensions, and relatively affordable price. As for technical and operational parameters, gas installations are an order of magnitude superior

Gas appliances are easier to maintain, have high performance, and are designed for a wide range of applications.

Gasoline devices are a little more difficult to operate. To ensure efficient and uninterrupted operation, you need to fill them with gasoline of the highest purity.

Distinctive features of oil and infrared heaters

To understand what is better to use for heating a house, an infrared heater or an oil heater, let’s consider their design, operating principle and some operational features. This will help “shed light” on solving the problem of choosing the optimal heating device.

Oil heater-radiator

A classic oil radiator is a container in the form of a panel or multi-section battery filled with transformer oil. The heating element built into the lower part of the device heats the coolant, which then releases the accumulated heat into the environment for a long time. The main method of heat transfer is convection.

The heating intensity is set by a mechanical thermostat. Most modern models are equipped with an automatic heating temperature maintenance function. All devices of this type are protected by coolant temperature and pressure in the container.

Design of oil radiators

The extensive range of models presented on the domestic market of climate control equipment has a floor-standing design. Despite its significant weight, this heater is quite mobile, as it is equipped with wheels for easy movement. Depending on the purpose, the following models are also available to the consumer:

  • wall;
  • desktop;
  • designed for children's cots.

The power of oil heaters varies from 1 to 2.5 kW. At the maximum power value, one such device can heat a room with an area of up to 25 m2 (1 kW per 10 m2 of area).

To reduce energy costs, modern models are equipped with a timer that allows you to turn on the device at a time specified by the user.

IR heater

To be able to decide which is better: a modern infrared heater or a classic oil one, let’s look at what infrared heating devices are made of and how they work.

The classic design of such a device consists of a metal body, an aluminum reflector on which a heating element is installed. There are four varieties of this element:

  • halogen lamp;
  • heater with carbon filament;
  • ceramic emitter;
  • tubular element.

To heat residential premises, IR heaters with a carbon or tubular heating element are most often used.

Operating principle of an infrared heater

The operating principle of infrared heating devices is simple: the rays produced by the emitter pass through the air without changing its temperature. When encountering objects, infrared rays are absorbed and the surface of the object is simultaneously heated. Further, the objects themselves begin to accumulate heat to the surrounding air. The radiation intensity is set by a thermostat, which is responsible for the temperature of the heating element. Most modern models are equipped with a thermostat with the function of automatically maintaining the heating temperature.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the obvious advantages that modern ceramic heaters have, several points can be highlighted.

High security. Even when heated to 900 degrees, ceramic elements do not emit hazardous or harmful substances. The material is completely natural, hypoallergenic, and does not affect the health of the respiratory system.

Efficiency up to 99%. The high heat transfer characteristic of all electric heaters is complemented by infrared radiation, which provides additional heating. In the case of gas devices, all these advantages are preserved.

Long service life of the heat exchange element. The ceramics inside the heaters or made in the form of plates for placement on the wall are not subject to corrosion and can be used for decades without loss of thermal conductivity properties.

High speed and uniform heating of the room

This is especially important for facilities where ceramic heaters become the only alternative to a traditional stove - in expedition trailers, country houses, and recreation centers.

Reduced energy consumption. Both gas and electric ceramic heaters require less energy than their classic counterparts with metal coils and heating elements.

They save not only energy resources, but also money that they have to pay on bills.

Compact dimensions and minimal weight. You can choose a model with floor, wall, or ceiling placement. They will be easy to use even in small-sized housing.

High level of fire safety. The presence of built-in tip-over protection, which instantly turns off the power supply, eliminates accidental fires. In addition, the front panel heats up to no more than +65 degrees Celsius; in case of accidental contact, the risk of burns is completely eliminated.

Complete absence of noise. The exception is models with a fan heater, but they also operate quite quietly.

Modern appearance. Ceramic panels and heaters look stylish and go well with different interior designs

Types and characteristics

In cases where additional heat sources are required, purchasing a heater would be an excellent option. The best option for heating your own homes is a gas-powered device. However, before you buy, identify your requirements for the future device.

Today there is a large selection of heaters designed for different areas and operating conditions. So, on sale you can find three types of gas heating appliances:

  • infrared (ceramic);
  • catalytic;
  • convector

Infrared

Such a heater operates on the principle of our Sun. During its operation, infrared rays emitted by the ceramic panel, reaching the surface of furniture, walls, objects, heat them. Those objects and interior parts that are exposed to infrared rays begin to release the accumulated heat into the surrounding space (for more details, see the article on the operating principle of a heater with infrared radiation).

Infrared gas heaters consist of:

  • metal case;
  • heat exchanger;
  • divider;
  • control unit;
  • gearbox

The dimensions of the device can be different: small, weighing about 6 kg, which are suitable for heating rooms up to 60 sq.m., and impressive, which can be used to heat an area of up to 100 sq.m.

Infrared gas devices are divided into:

  1. Ceramic. They use a ceramic plate as a heat exchanger, which can heat up to temperatures above 800 degrees.
  2. Catalytic (flameless combustion). Thermal radiation from such devices does not exceed 600 degrees.

There are also outdoor IR heaters. Their name speaks for itself. Such devices are good to use in gazebos, balconies, terraces, and lawns. The effectiveness of such a device is in no way inferior to the classic one. It, like a home gas heater, has a high efficiency. The only caveat is that the outdoor space will quickly consume the heat generated by heated objects.

Catalytic

A special feature of such devices is that they operate without flames and noise, being the safest in the line of all gas-powered heaters.

The heat exchanger in such models is made of fiberglass, on which a catalyst made of palladium or the beloved platinum (with copper, chromium or iron oxide) is applied on top. When gas interacts with the catalyst coating, a chemical reaction occurs, which results in heat. It is clear that with this operating principle there is a complete absence of combustion products and smoke. Quite often, catalytic models are equipped with fans and electric heating elements, which increases their efficiency and makes them energy-dependent.

Convector

This type of device differs in the installation method. Installation of a convector device requires a chimney. It, like the catalytic one, only heats the space around it. However, it has a flame, like any other gas boiler. Oxygen, without which combustion will not occur, enters the device through the chimney. And through it the smoke is discharged to the street.

The operating principle of convector devices is as follows:

  1. Gas is supplied to the chamber where combustion occurs.
  2. Oxygen enters the firebox through the chimney.
  3. Using a special button on the panel, the gas is ignited.
  4. The flame heats the heat exchanger, which in turn transfers heat to the air.

This type of gas heaters operate on the principle of convention. Through small oblong holes located on the body at the bottom and top, cold air enters the inside of the device, where it is heated using a heat exchanger. As a result, it leaves the inside of the heater, escaping to the surface through the upper slots. For more productive operation of the equipment, it is equipped with a fan that promotes active air convection. It turns on from the icon located on the case.

Convector heaters, like infrared and catalytic models, are equipped with control sensors that are responsible for certain processes occurring inside the equipment. If any problems arise, the sensors will record this and activate the automation, which will turn off the equipment.

Ceramic type heaters

These devices are already quite suitable for use in residential buildings. The level of security during their operation is several times higher, due to a different operating principle.

A special gas burner is also built into such a device; it creates numerous, but small-sized flames that heat not the air in the room itself, but a special ceramic emitter. At the same time, it heats up to fairly high temperatures (varies from 600 to 800 degrees) and becomes a source of infrared rays (infrared gas heaters for summer cottages).

One of the advantages of such equipment is that the thermal energy in them can travel over vast distances without dissipating through the air , but, being absorbed by optically opaque objects (including the human body), causing them to quickly heat up. Heated objects, including walls, floors, furniture, and ceilings, will spread their heat through the direct process of heat transfer with the air in the room.
