How to set the air conditioner to cold and warm

Agree, the heating system in our homes is not perfect, and often we have to heat the room on our own. Not all owners of air conditioners know that the equipment can be used not only to cool the air, but also to warm it up. In this article we will tell you in detail how to turn on warm air on your air conditioner.

You will also learn the principle of operation of the air conditioner in heating mode, the rules for operating the equipment, the advantages and disadvantages of using it in winter. As a bonus, we will tell you what to do if after all the manipulations the air in the room does not heat up.

Features of the air conditioner for heating

In our country, air conditioning is rarely used to heat a room. It's all about climatic features, in particular, the famous Russian frosts.

The compressor that compresses the refrigerant, which is distributed among parts of the device, “suffers” from low temperatures. Oil is dissolved in it, intended to lubricate rubbing parts. In cold weather it thickens and equipment parts wear out quickly.

In winter, air temperature and humidity often change, causing condensation to form when the air conditioner operates. To remove excess moisture, a drainage system is provided in the form of a tube leading outside

At sub-zero temperatures, the water in the drainage tube freezes and a plug forms in it, which blocks the condensate drainage. In this case, excess moisture leaks into the room through the internal casing, which leads to equipment failure.

After installing the air conditioner for heating, the refrigerant should heat up. However, due to low temperatures this does not happen. As a result, cooled refrigerant, which has not had time to heat up, enters the compressor, which leads to hydraulic gift. As a result, the device becomes unusable.

To heat the room in the off-season, you can use a simple split system. Most often, this option is used during the period when the central heating has not yet been turned on, and the house is cool and damp. Heating with an air conditioner is more economical than most heaters (more heat is produced for the same energy consumption).

The principle of operation of a split system: air is heated in the outdoor unit, after which it enters the indoor unit through a pipeline, and the fan redirects the warm air downward. However, when frost sets in, it is prohibited to use this type of air conditioner.

Models with a heat pump are suitable for year-round operation. The air enters the external unit, where it is warmed. Then, using freon, it is redirected to the indoor unit, from where warm air enters the room.

The main benefit of using an air conditioner to heat a room is saving energy. In heating devices, electricity is converted into heat at a ratio of 1:1.

Air conditioners do not convert electricity. It is spent on the transfer of thermal energy. To obtain 1 kilowatt of heat, 250-350 watts of energy is required, which is 3-4 times less than the consumption of a standard heater.

An air conditioner with a heating function is also indispensable in the off-season. Using an air conditioner, you can heat the air in the room to a comfortable temperature, and since there is no frost yet, nothing threatens the device.

There are few disadvantages to heating a room with an air conditioner. One device cannot heat the air in all rooms. Like other heating devices, the air conditioner dries the air.

Is it possible to turn on the air conditioner in winter?

There is a wide range of air conditioners on the market with different technical characteristics, so choosing an air conditioner is not very easy. But split systems, monoblocks and other devices still have one thing in common: they are used extremely rarely in winter. But why?

It's about our famous Russian frosts. When the air temperature changes, its humidity also changes, so when the air conditioner operates, excess moisture (condensation) occurs. Most air conditioners have a drainage system installed to remove moisture: the visible part of this system is a tube, which, as a rule, goes outside.

If it's too cold outside, the drainage system tube freezes and an ice plug forms in it, which prevents condensation from escaping. Then the moisture has two options: either it seeps into your home through the internal casing, or it damages the device.

The outdoor unit also suffers from the cold, in particular the compressor - the “heart” of the air conditioner, compressing the refrigerant (a special substance necessary for the operation of air conditioners) and supporting its movement through the rest of the device.

A special oil helps him carry out his direct duties, the properties of which depend on the air temperature. If it drops below the limit approved by the manufacturer, the oil will thicken and compressor parts will wear out.

There is another danger. In heating mode, the refrigerant, despite its name, should not be cooled, but heated. This does not happen at extremely low temperatures. Upon arrival chilled, i.e. When liquid refrigerant enters the compressor, a hydraulic shock occurs - this is what can render the device unusable.

Therefore, in winter you should use the air conditioner with caution and follow the operating instructions.

True, there is one type of air conditioner that can be adapted to work in winter conditions - a mobile monoblock air conditioner. This mobile floor device can be used in all rooms, taken with you to the dacha or transported when moving: the device does not require installation.

The only element of the device that should not be located in the room is the air duct for removing warm or cold air. To eliminate the risk of freezing of the air duct, it is worth leading it into the ventilation hole.

Before using the heating mode, make sure that the device has this function. This is indicated in the instructions, as well as on the device itself - the heating mode is usually indicated by a sun icon.

If a heating mode is provided, look at the lower temperature threshold at which heating can be turned on - this is usually also written in the instructions.

Remember: every thermometer may have errors. Sometimes it reaches several degrees. Therefore, it is better not to use the air conditioner if your thermometer shows the critical level declared by the manufacturer.

Is it possible to turn it on for cooling?

The answer will be the same as the answer to the question about heating - it is possible. But only if the winter is warm.

Typically, the minimum temperature at which the air conditioner operates normally in cooling mode is -5°C. At a lower temperature, the device is exposed to all the dangers that we wrote about at the beginning of the article. Therefore, carefully study the technical specifications of the device before using the cooling mode.

In order not to be distracted by the operation of the air conditioner, you can install an IR module. With it, the device will turn on and off automatically according to the schedule that you create.

However, you always have the opportunity to “boost” your air conditioning by installing a winter kit.

Which air conditioner to choose for heating?

If you plan to use an air conditioner not only for cooling the air in the summer, but also for heating in the cold season, then you should choose a model with an inverter compressor. Since the equipment will be operated over a wide temperature range, a necessary condition is smooth adjustment of the compressor performance.

If the device fails as a result of non-compliance with temperature parameters, this is not a warranty case. In winter, it is recommended to disconnect the air conditioner from the power supply. To protect the external unit from icicles and snow, you should install a visor

It should also be taken into account that the device must be designed to operate at temperatures of -20 - -25 C.

Only in this case can you be sure that the manufacturer has provided all the components for operation in winter:

  • fan speed controller in the outdoor unit;
  • presence of defrost mode;
  • special compressor design;
  • crankcase and compressor heating;
  • heat exchanger with anti-corrosion layer, etc.

Conventional models of air conditioners for a home or apartment can also heat the air, but their operation is allowed at temperatures down to -5 C. However, do not forget about the opportunity to “strengthen” the equipment by installing a winter kit.

Warmth in English in the air conditioner

Before setting the air conditioner to heating mode, you need to make sure that its operating temperature is within operating limits, otherwise the system may fail.

    Undoubtedly, different manufacturing companies (for example, LG, Samsung or General) produce largely different models, but there is still a certain universal model for turning on the heating:
  • It is necessary to turn on the device (the power button is labeled “On”).
  • Next, press the “Heat” key, which means “warmth”.

If this button is not present, other options may be present: “Mode”, or any other buttons with icons such as “sun”, “drop”, “fan”, “snow” drawn under/above them. If none of these buttons are present, this means that the system is not capable of heating.

If there is a “Mode” button, you need to press it several times until the “sun” or the signature “Heat” is displayed. Using the switching arrows or “+/-” buttons, you need to set a comfortable temperature.

After completing this entire procedure, the fan will turn on, and after five (maximum ten) minutes warm air will be generated, heated to the temperature previously set by the user. Some remote control models may be configured differently - it is recommended to read the instructions before setting up.

To turn on the air conditioner in heating mode, it is not always necessary to use the remote control. Any split system has an external panel (sometimes hidden by a protective screen), the buttons of which duplicate the remote control keys.

This is for situations where the remote control is lost, broken, or located far away. Using the panel, you can set the system to heating mode in the same way.

How to set the heating mode

    Before turning on the air conditioner to heat, make sure that:
  1. The air conditioner has a heating function;
  2. The outside air temperature corresponds to the stated values in the instructions for the air conditioner.

Each instruction manual for the air conditioner indicates at what temperatures it is allowed to operate. If you are unsure, call the company that installed or serviced your air conditioner.

A conventional split system can be operated down to -5 degrees, but we advise our clients to operate it down to 0 degrees. By installing the winter kit, you can use the air conditioner in heating mode and turn it on even at -30 degrees.

Some models of air conditioners - inverter air conditioners - can heat a room even in winter at fairly low sub-zero temperatures.

When the heating mode is turned on, the fan may run for 3-5 minutes at the beginning to prevent cold air from blowing in while the air conditioner warms up.

Since the air conditioner heats the room by extracting heat energy from the outside air, its heating capacity may decrease if the outside temperature is extremely low.

In Heat mode, the air conditioner will heat the room. You can set the temperature and fan speed to feel the heating device work in the cold season.

    To set the heating mode, perform the following steps:
  • Press the power button to turn on the air conditioner.
  • Press the mode button to set the operating mode.
  • Each time you press the Mode button, the mode changes in the following order: Auto → Cool → Dry → Fan → Heat.

The fifth function is the heating mode.

During Auto mode, the air conditioner controls its operation itself. He will choose the mode himself and provide the most comfortable environment.

  1. After selecting Heat mode, set the desired temperature using the button on the remote control.
  2. If necessary, set the fan speed using the button on the remote control.

When setting the heating mode, please consider the operating temperature range shown in the tables below.

For inverter air conditioners (AQV** series):

For non-inverter (“conventional”) air conditioners:

When operating the air conditioner in winter at temperatures below those specified by the manufacturer, icing of the heat exchanger, compressor and fan blades may occur, which will lead to failure of the air conditioner.

How to run all functions

Switching from cooling mode to heating mode is carried out using the remote control. There are several options to do this:

  • Option #1.
  1. There is a "MODE" button on your remote control.
  2. When you press it, the “sun” icon or the words “HEAT” will appear on the remote control display.
  3. You need to wait a little, about 5 minutes, since the warm air will not come out immediately.
  4. It is also possible to make all of the above settings on the remote control and then, pointing the remote control at the air conditioner, press the “ON” button.
  • Option #2.
  1. If there is no “MODE” button on the remote control, but there is a button above which there are symbols: “snowflake”, “fan”, “droplet”, “sun”.
  2. We choose “sun”.
  3. It is also necessary to wait a little, since warm air will not come out immediately.

Remote control

Each of us knows that this device comes with a remote control. Setting up the air conditioner using the remote control is quite simple. The instructions describe in detail all the actions that can be performed with the air conditioner using the remote control.

You can easily set it up so as not to catch a cold. Using the remote control you can set exactly the temperature that is required. You can easily make the air warmer or colder. The main thing is that you can do this without leaving your couch or office desk.

Typically, heat and cold are indicated by some icons on the remote control. For example, heat is indicated by the sun, and cold by a snowflake. And the sign “more than” or “less than” is indicated by the corresponding arrows. The buttons are quite convenient.

The dimensions of the control panel themselves are small. And also it is very light. Holding the remote control in your hand is very comfortable and easy. You can even put it in the pocket of your robe or jacket, it won't get in your way.

The only problem can be that such a small and light thing is not at all difficult to lose. Therefore, the remote control should be kept in sight and should not be allowed near children.

But what to do if suddenly the remote control is not at hand?

    Here is a list of necessary actions when you need to turn on the air conditioner without a remote control:
  • First you need to make sure that the air conditioner is working. Check the wiring to it. If it is in place and the wires are not broken or cut, then you can follow the following instructions.
  • Find the plastic cover on the front of this household item. It is small in size and rectangular in shape. It is located mainly a little lower than the so-called air conditioner curtains.
  • This cover must be carefully lifted (grasping it with your fingers on two opposite sides), pressing slightly on the cover itself.
  • Under this cover there is a panel on which there should be a button. Where exactly it is located (left or right) depends on the model of the unit. But often it is highlighted.
  • If the device is in working condition, this button will glow greenish (less often orange). Of course, under it there is a corresponding inscription in English “on and off”.
  • This button should be pressed and held for some time (several seconds). The device must either work or turn off. This is to turn the unit on or off. If you need to change warm air to cold air, then you need to press the button without holding it down.

Please note that you will not be able to change the temperature using such a panel; for this you need a remote control. Therefore, you should not delay your search. If the remote control is broken, you just need to buy a new one. To do this, it is enough to know the make and model of the device.

If the air conditioner does not turn on for heating

If you have completed all the steps described above, but the air conditioner still does not turn on for heating, then a possible reason is that it simply does not have such a function. You can check this in the instructions for the air conditioner.

If the instructions say that such a function is still provided, then contact the service company that serves you; you may need repairs.

There are two main options: either the setup was done incorrectly, or there is a breakdown in the device itself. It is recommended to turn off the air conditioner and repeat all steps again. If after ten minutes there is no heat from the device, there is a breakdown.

The most common malfunction is a lack of freon, necessary for the functioning of the heating system. In this situation, it is necessary to take the air conditioner for repair, or call qualified specialists at home, especially if the device is under warranty.

In addition, it is possible that the air conditioner is turned on at temperatures incompatible with its normal operation. It should be noted that some manufacturing companies produce additional modifications that expand the operating temperature range from -30 to +30 degrees Celsius.

Installing a winter kit for air conditioning

Standard models of air conditioners can be retrofitted with a winter kit, which will allow the equipment to be operated in low temperature conditions.

The package consists of several devices, which:

  • heat the drainage system;
  • prevent overcooling of the refrigerant;
  • prevent oil from thickening.

The basic principle of operation of additional equipment:

  1. The temperature sensor allows you to regulate the rotation speed of the fan located in the external unit. As the temperature decreases, its speed decreases. This avoids thickening (freezing) of the oil and icing of the housing.
  2. Heating of the compressor crankcase, so that the device is always ready to start.
  3. Heating of the drainage system so that ice plugs do not form and condensate is effectively removed.

It would seem that a solution has been found. However, this was not the case. Installing a winter kit allows you to turn on the air conditioner at lower temperatures set by the manufacturer for cooling only.

Having equipped the air conditioner with a winter set, it is still prohibited to use it for heating in cold weather. The risk of water hammer also increases significantly

Winter kit is most often installed in rooms that are not desirable to be ventilated, but need to be cooled. For example: server and computer centers, where it is necessary to maintain an optimal temperature to preserve the equipment.

The principle of operation of an air conditioner for heating is extremely simple - heat is absorbed through evaporation, and it is released through condensation.

In order to understand how equipment heats air, you need to understand how it is cooled:

  1. In a gaseous state, the refrigerant enters the compressor.
  2. Under pressure, it is compressed and heated to a high temperature.
  3. The refrigerant flows from the compressor to the condenser and turns into a liquid state.
  4. The refrigerant pressure decreases and it is redirected to the evaporator of the indoor unit. Here it again turns into a gaseous state.
  5. The refrigerant “boils,” causing the air in the room to cool. The collected heat is “thrown out” onto the street.
  6. The refrigerant gas is returned to the compressor. The cycle is completed.

In heating mode, the condenser and evaporator change places. This becomes possible thanks to a special valve that reverses the refrigerant flow.

How does an air conditioner work for heat?

Any split system is based on the principle of circulation of freon, which goes through various phases, either boiling or turning into gas, thereby releasing thermal energy into the surrounding space, that is, working for heating. It all depends on the junction temperature, which is controlled by the heat exchanger. If it is higher than the ambient temperature, freon turns into gas and releases heat, absorbing cold.

A necessary condition is the presence of sufficient pressure, which will ensure the transformation of freon into a gaseous state. Two elements of the split system are responsible for this function:

  • compressor;
  • thermostatic valves.

The compressor increases the pressure, and the valves decrease it.

Permissible temperature for heating operation

Most often, most split systems operate effectively at temperatures not lower than -5°C. In severe frosts, the efficiency of the equipment drops and there is a risk of icing of the drainage system and condenser.

When taking air temperature readings, you need to take into account the thermometer’s error. Therefore, at critical temperatures declared by the manufacturer, it is better not to turn on the device

The lower permissible temperature limit depends on the type of refrigerant. Some air conditioners effectively heat the air even at -15°C. In harsh climatic conditions, inverter models are used, in which the intensity of the compressor can be adjusted.

Advantages and disadvantages of heating mode

Modern air conditioners perfectly heat any room. An air conditioner with heating has a high efficiency (stands for “efficiency factor”), which allows you to create comfortable conditions in an apartment or house. However, it is not recommended to neglect the services of central heating.

The constant operation of the relative system is harmful to the body, since heated air masses with prolonged circulation in a closed room harm the natural processes of thermoregulation, which can affect the immune system.

Safety precautions

Remember that you cannot set the air conditioner to warm air if the temperature outside is too low. Thus, some models operate at temperatures not lower than -5 to -8 degrees Celsius.

If you turn on the heat in severe frost, the outdoor unit may freeze and, as a result, break down.

An inverter air conditioner (with a winter kit) can operate at lower temperatures. It can be placed on heat at temperatures from -10 to -15 degrees Celsius. Of course, a split system alone cannot cope with heating an apartment or house, and therefore must be used in conjunction with radiators.

Inverter models of air conditioners

Inverter air conditioners can be used all year round. Their distinctive feature lies in the way the compressor operates. As the temperature drops, performance is reduced to the required level by changing the motor speed.

The energy efficiency coefficient of an inverter air conditioner is 5. This means that you will get 5 kW of heat by spending 1 kW of electricity.

Disadvantages of inverter air conditioning systems:

  • high price;
  • significant weight of the outdoor unit;
  • sensitivity to voltage surges;
  • more complex repairs.

Advantages:

  • rapid achievement of the set temperature;
  • almost silent;
  • It is impossible to turn on the device at temperatures below the permissible ones.

Continuous operation of the equipment (without periodic switching on/off) allows you to save up to 30% of electricity.

Why is heating with air conditioning cost-effective?

An air conditioner is able to “extract heat” from its environment by condensing liquid in the air it draws in. How does this happen? Freon condenses in the thermoblock under high pressure. Liquid freon enters the outdoor unit, where the pressure drops sharply, turning the freon back into gas.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bk-O04S0_DQ

So, 2-3 kW of heat obtained from the environment and 1 kW of electricity provide a total of 3-5 kW of heat for heating the room. We get at least 3 times more energy than we spend. Profitable, isn't it?

How to set the air conditioner to heat?

Before turning on a conventional split system for heating, you should make sure that the equipment provides this option.

Before starting operation, be sure to study the instructions, in which the presence of this mode is indicated by the sun icon or the “Heat” key. If the option is provided, check the lower temperature threshold

Stages of connecting the air conditioner for heating using the control panel.

  1. Connect the equipment to the power supply.
  2. Press the “on/off” button once. Most often, it differs from other buttons in color.
  3. Press the “Mode/Heat” key or the button with the image of a droplet, sun, or snowflake. Afterwards, an image of the sun appears on the display.
  4. Set the desired temperature.

Warm air will begin to flow after 5-10 minutes.

Using the control panel you can adjust the position of the blinds and the fan speed.

If there is no “NEAT” button or sun button on the remote control, while other modes are provided, it means that your device is not intended for heating a room

Stages of connecting the air conditioner for heating using buttons on the device itself:

  1. Connect the equipment to the power supply.
  2. Click on “on/off”. The button is located on the indoor unit or under the plastic panel. By briefly pressing the modes change (from cold to heat). A long press turns off the device.
  3. The temperature can only be adjusted using the control panel.

More detailed instructions on how to turn on the air conditioner for heating are in the instructions.

Why doesn't the air conditioner heat?

First of all, you should make sure whether this option is provided in the selected climate control device. If there are negative temperatures outside, the cause may be a compressor failure, freezing of the oil or drainage system.

If the display shows information that the device is functioning normally, do not rush to panic. It takes time to warm up the indoor unit - up to 15 minutes. During this time, after starting the device, the temperature in the room will begin to rise

Another cause of the malfunction may be a refrigerant leak. This occurs as a result of poor soldering of interblock tubes. Call a service technician who will fix the problem and top up the refrigerant.

After installing the air conditioner, you should clean the filters on time. If you ignore this requirement, then breakdown cannot be avoided. To accurately determine the source of the problem, you need to pay attention to the display screen, which displays the error code. The meaning can be found in the instructions.

If 15 minutes after starting the system the air heating has not started, try setting the settings again. To do this, read the instructions again on how to set the air conditioner for warm air. Repeat all steps from the beginning. Then turn on the system again and check its operation after 15 minutes.

If the image of the sun or the inscription “NEAT” blinks periodically, then most likely the battery should be replaced. Sometimes it's enough to just pull them out and put them back in

The reason for the lack of heating may be an insufficient amount of freon. In this case, you should contact customer service.

The air conditioner does not go into heating mode

If, after setting the air conditioner to heat, the temperature in the room does not increase, it means that your split device is not designed for this, or there is a failure in the internal settings in its system. It is not difficult to check whether the air conditioner can be turned on for heating using the instructions.

If the function for heating the room is provided by the manufacturer, but the temperature does not heat up, then the device is broken. The cause of the breakdown may be:

  • freon leak;
  • breakage of the switch valve;
  • electronic malfunctions.

Without a sufficient amount of freon, the device will not be able to heat or cool the air. In this case, you need to contact a specialized workshop to refill the system with freon. Scheduled refueling should be done at least once every 2-3 years.

Electrical malfunctions are also a common reason why your device, for example, Elgie, does not switch to “hot” mode. A possible solution to the problem is to reboot the split system. If, after turning it on again, the air conditioner does not begin to function in heater mode, then you will have to contact a repair shop.

How to turn on the air conditioner for warm air

Let's figure out how to set the air conditioner to heat.
To turn the air conditioner into a heater, you need to find the Heat button on the control panel. It could also be a button with pictograms of a sun, droplets, or snowflake above it.

Once you turn on the Heat button, you need to be patient because the device needs time to adjust.

In this case, the curtain of the indoor unit will open, but nothing else will happen within 1-2 minutes (the response of the split system can be different - it could be a squeak, a light bulb coming on, etc.). When the refrigerant warms up, warm air will begin to blow from the device.

After the heating has started, you need to adjust the temperature settings. The Temp button has plus and minus icons. By increasing or decreasing the temperature by 1°C with each press, you can set the most comfortable value for yourself. It is worth noting that each mode has its own temperature restrictions.

In addition, you can adjust the rotation of the fan, which determines the speed of heating or cooling the air in the room. Adjustment is carried out using the Fan button. Typically, climate control equipment uses three rotation speeds: low, medium and high, as well as automatic mode.

If there is a heating mode, it is turned on, but after 5-10 minutes warm air still does not come out, you need to repeat the operation (just in case, change the batteries in the remote control).

If there is no response, it may be a low freon level, or a more serious breakdown has occurred.
