How to set a Baxi boiler to economical mode. Thermostat BAXI

Rising tariffs and the inaccessibility of centralized resource lines in remote areas contribute to the development of autonomous systems for providing private homes with heat and hot water.

The most successful options are boilers that provide heating of hot water, supply and circulation of coolant in heating circuits or underfloor heating systems.

There are many companies engaged in the production of heating equipment that develop and improve the design of heating units.

Gas installations are considered the most efficient and economical, which significantly prevail over other types of heating boilers.

The most important operational procedure is setting, which will be discussed using the example of gas boilers from the Italian company Baxi.

Installation of a Baxi gas boiler

Boiler installation consists of several stages:

  1. Installing a water filter on the pipeline supplying water to the hot water system. It is imperative to install shut-off valves on both sides, making it possible to dismantle the filter for maintenance, repair or replacement.
  2. Place the unit in the designated area. Floor-standing units are simply placed at the desired point in the room, while wall-mounted boilers are hung on the surface of solid walls. Mounting to plasterboard partitions or other structures that do not have sufficient load-bearing capacity is prohibited. Mounting to the wall is done using special brackets (sleds), which are included in the delivery set.
  3. All supply pipelines are connected - gas, forward and return coolant, hot water supply. A coaxial chimney is installed and connected (some models are equipped with a double vertical chimney). The presence and quality of traction is immediately checked.

The final stage is connecting the boiler to the power supply network. This requires a separate outlet; powering other devices from it is prohibited by operating rules.

IMPORTANT!

It is strongly recommended to use a stabilizer to eliminate voltage surges.

Is it possible to turn off the boiler?

Whether it is necessary to turn off the boiler is a question that users usually ask with the onset of the warm season. Gas equipment belongs to high-risk objects and must always be in good condition, both from the internal elements of the unit and from external auxiliary equipment, including utility networks for gas, electricity and water supply.

The main working element of the device is the internal heating system of the boiler, made of metal, which is subject to corrosion processes, both internally, under the influence of O2 in an aqueous environment, and externally due to the presence of soot. Therefore, all manufacturers recommend preserving the boiler during long shutdowns to reduce corrosion processes. The type of conservation will depend on the type of fuel burned, the quality of the tap water and the material of the boiler pipes. The preservation technology is clearly described in the operating instructions for the unit and must be carried out impeccably by the operating personnel.

Preservation of boilers is carried out in several ways: dry, wet and overpressure:

  1. The dry method is used when it is necessary to turn off the boiler for a long period of time during the cold season at subzero temperatures. It consists in the fact that the device is completely emptied of water and, with the air vents open, the boiler heating surfaces are dried from residual water by an external source, for example, a blower.
  2. The wet method is used when there is no danger of low temperatures. In this case, the unit is filled with water with alkaline reagents creating a uniform protective film on the metal surface.
  3. The overpressure method consists in maintaining pressure in the unit, disconnected from gas, which prevents oxygen from entering it from the air, which is the main aggressive corrosive element. With this method, before the boiler is turned off, it must be filled with purified water from the filters.

All of the above conservation methods require ensuring complete tightness of the fittings and fittings of the device.

User manual

First of all, it is necessary to rinse or clean the heating circuit and chimney. Any contamination can disrupt the nominal operating mode, which will cause accelerated wear of certain components and failure of the entire system .

The boiler connection must be carried out by specialists from an authorized service center, who also perform the initial setup of the installation.

The boilers undergo pre-sale preparation and are supplied to the retail chain completely ready for start-up. This means that no additional action is required .

This is the manufacturer’s statement, but in practice it is almost always necessary to adjust the settings in accordance with the existing technological or technical conditions. Basically, the setting consists of determining the minimum and maximum gas pressure and the exhaust temperature range, which determines the switching on and off of the boiler.

NOTE!

All settings must be performed by service organizations. The warranty period begins from the moment of startup, and independent activation may be regarded as a violation of the contract with the service center, as a result of which repairs will be refused.

10. Care instructions

To keep your boiler operating efficiently and safely, it should be inspected by a qualified technician at the end of each season. High-quality maintenance ensures long service life and economical operation of the system. The external coating of the boiler must not be cleaned with abrasive, caustic or flammable detergents (such as gasoline, alcohol, etc.). Always unplug the unit before cleaning (see section 6)

11. General information

The following instructions and notes are designed to assist a qualified technician in carrying out error-free installation and maintenance. Instructions regarding ignition of the boiler and its operation are given in the “User’s Guide” section. Installation, maintenance and testing of domestic gas appliances must only be carried out by qualified personnel and in accordance with current regulations.

Note:

this boiler can be connected to any type of radiators and heat exchangers using a single-pipe,

two-pipe or beam system. You can arrange the sections in the heating system in the usual way, taking into account the data from section 24 - “Flow/pressure characteristics”.

Keep packaging parts (plastic bags, polystyrene foam, etc.) out of the reach of children, as they are

source of potential danger

The first start-up of the boiler must be carried out by a qualified specialist.

Warranty obligations are fulfilled by the organization that carried out the first start-up of the boiler. This organization must have licenses established by law. The warranty period begins from the moment of first start-up. To carry out the first start-up and subsequent maintenance of the boiler, we recommend that you contact authorized BAXI service centers (“BAXI”). Ask your sales organization for addresses and phone numbers of service centers. Knowing local conditions, parameters of electricity, gas, and water supply, the service organization has the right to require the installation of additional equipment (voltage stabilizer, water softener, etc.)

12. Checks before installing the boiler

The boiler is designed to heat water no higher than the boiling point at atmospheric pressure. It is connected to the heating system and to the hot water preparation system in accordance with its characteristics and power. Before installing the boiler, you must: a) Check that the boiler is configured to work with this type of gas. This information is given on the packaging and on the nameplate of the boiler.

b) Make sure that there is sufficient draft in the chimney, there are no restrictions, and there is no entry of foreign combustion products, unless the chimney is specifically designed to serve several devices.

c) When connecting a smoke exhaust pipe to an existing chimney, check that the chimney is completely clean, because When the boiler is operating, soot particles can come off the walls of the chimney and block the exit of combustion products, thereby creating a dangerous situation.

In addition, to maintain your product's warranty and to maintain proper operation, the following precautions must be taken:

1. DHW system:

1.1 if the water hardness is above 20º F (where 1º F = 10 mg CaCO

3

per 1 liter of water) should be set

a polyphosphate dispenser or similar water softening system that complies with current regulations.

1.2

The DHW system must be thoroughly flushed after installing the device and before using it.

1.3

For reliable operation and ease of maintenance, it is strongly recommended to install on the inlet pipe

cold water supply shut-off valve with filter.

2. Heating system
2.1 new equipment:
Before installing the boiler, the heating equipment must be pre-cleaned to remove possible deposits or contamination (pieces of casing, solders, etc.), using commercially available substances. Substances used to clean equipment must not contain concentrated acid or alkali, which can corrode metal and damage parts of equipment made of

To turn off the boiler, you must turn off the power supply to the device. When the mode switch is in position

“OFF” (see paragraph 5) the boiler does not work (OFF appears on the display), but the electrical circuit of the boiler remains

under voltage and the “frost protection” function remains active (paragraph 9).

7. BOILER TURN OFF

8. Converting the boiler to another type of gas

The boiler can operate on both natural and liquefied gas. Converting the boiler to another type of gas can only be done

Turn off the power supply to the boiler using the bipolar switch.

Check the pressure gauge regularly to ensure the pressure is between 0.7 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold

heating. If the pressure exceeds, open the drain valve. If the pressure is below normal, open the fill valve

We recommend opening the tap very slowly to make it easier to bleed out the air.

6. FILLING THE SYSTEM

The boiler is equipped with a differential hydraulic pressure switch, which turns off the boiler in case of

pump blocking or lack of water.

If the pressure drops frequently, have your boiler checked by a qualified professional.

ABOUT THE USE OF NON-FREEZING LIQUIDS (ANTIFREEZE) IN BAXI BOILERS.

IS IT POSSIBLE OR NOT TO PUT ANTI-FREEZER INTO BAXI BOILERS?

THE IDEAL COOL CARRIER IS WATER. This means CLEAR WATER, and not water “from a puddle”, or from a well with an unknown composition, not rainwater, etc. Water that, when heated, will not form a hard deposit on the heat exchanger and other elements of the boiler, that will not enter into various chemical reactions, etc.

WATER HAS THE ONLY MINUS - AT LOW TEMPERATURES IT FREEZES(((

ACCORDINGLY, ANTI-FREEZE LIQUID HAS THE ONLY PLUS - ANTI-FREEZE LIQUID DOES NOT FREEZE!

We attribute everything else to ITS MINUSES.

PROPERTIES (MINUSES) OF ANTI-FREEZES (NON-FREEZING LIQUIDS):

-Viscosity. That is, the circulation is worse than if there was water in the heating system. The consequence is the likelihood of deposits, overheating of the heat exchanger, micro-boiling of the main heat exchanger of the boiler. Overheating is also associated with the appearance of noise, whistling, and knocking during operation of the boiler heat exchanger.

Sometimes it is necessary to install a more powerful heating system pump.

-Fluidity. Gaskets, rubber bands, connections will leak... Both in the boiler and in the heating system.

— Tendency to various chemical reactions inside the boiler and heating system. With aluminum, with iron, copper (the heat exchanger and tubes in the wall-mounted traditional BAXI boiler are copper) This is also due to the fact that the liquid can contain various additives, and can also be diluted with water of unknown composition.

An extreme option that periodically occurs is a fistula of copper tubes and the main copper heat exchanger. This is when small holes form in the copper, as if pierced with a needle. This process can be called copper electrolysis and occurs in the presence of electrical potential, which can come from anywhere. For example, it appears when the water heater adjacent to the boiler is turned on, etc.

First start

After connecting all communications and power supplies, you can turn on the boiler.

Procedure:

  • Open the gas tap.
  • Set the heating and DHW supply mode (or only DHW). These modes correspond to the designations “Winter” and “Summer”.
  • Set the desired temperature by pressing the “+” or “-” buttons.

After this, the burner will start and the boiler will begin to operate. Often, after the first start, an error immediately appears on the display and the boiler is blocked.

This is due to air remaining in the pipes. By pressing the “R” button and holding it for several seconds, the error is reset and the unit is restarted. Several repetitions of this situation may occur before the air is completely removed.

IMPORTANT!

The air can be released more quickly by opening the pump and loosening the screw. The procedure is performed with the power off. The air will come out from under the pump cover as soon as water comes out, the screw will immediately be tightened again and the equipment will start again.

Operating principle of the Baxi boiler

  • Magnesium anode is a unique technology that reduces the appearance of scale on the internal walls of the boiler. Installed next to the heating element.
  • Built-in coil - hot water is heated as follows. Inside the body there is a coil placed in a metal flask. Water from the heating system is passed through the circuit. The coolant heats the water surrounding the coil to a comfortable 36-40°C.
  • Water recirculation - the disadvantage of all double-circuit boilers is that after opening the water supply tap, it takes a long time until hot water begins to flow to the consumer. To avoid this, install a recirculation system. The idea is that hot water constantly circulates from the boiler to the water supply tap and back. The operating principle of the Baksi indirect heating boiler is based on the use of constant recirculation, providing instant supply of hot water to the consumer.
  • Additional heating element for maintaining temperature - after the heating system is turned off in the summer or due to the burnout of the main type of fuel, the tubular heating element is turned on. The installation begins to work like a regular electric boiler.
  • The internal structure of the Baxi boiler is similar to that used in a conventional storage tank with an electric tubular heater, only the functions of the heating element are performed by a coil with water circulating through it from the heating system. The body is lined with insulating material. The thickness of the thermal insulation, depending on the chosen model, is 50 or 100 mm. Insulation ensures that the maximum daily heat loss will not exceed 1-1.5°C.
  • Volume - Baxi boilers are available with the possibility of wall and floor installation. Capacity of containers, from 100 to 2500 liters. To facilitate installation of the Baxi indirect heating boiler, the kit includes special fasteners.
  • The design of the heat exchanger uses the principle of layer-by-layer heating of water. The special design ensures a rapid increase in water temperature. Almost immediately after opening the water supply tap, hot water is supplied to the consumer.

How often should it turn on?

The frequency of turning on the boiler depends on several factors:

  • Unit power.
  • Correct boiler settings.
  • Availability of a room thermostat.

If the power is excessive, the installation quickly heats up the heating agent and turns off. The circulation pump ensures the flow of new portions of cooled coolant, the temperature sensor is triggered and starts the boiler again.

Power can be reduced programmatically . It is also necessary to reconfigure the boiler, in particular, increase parameter F11 (waiting time before restarting) to the maximum, which is 10 minutes.

Using a thermostat allows you to significantly increase the time between starts of the unit, since the air cools and heats up much more slowly.

Temperature adjustment

To increase or decrease the heating agent temperature, there are “+” and “-” buttons to the right and left of the display (on older models there is a special regulator; turning clockwise increases the temperature and vice versa).

If a room thermostat is used, adjustments are made from it, and only limit values are set on the boiler.

When setting the temperature, do not change the parameters in large increments . It is necessary to change the mode smoothly, giving some time to overcome the inertia of the system. This will soften the transition to another mode and extend the life of the boiler.

Pressure setting

To increase the pressure, a make-up valve is used, and to release the pressure, a drain valve is used.

The optimal value is considered to be a range of 0.7-1 mbar . Usually Baxi boilers independently maintain the desired value, but sometimes failures occur. If there is a constant drop that does not disappear after the system is recharged, then there is an OM leak somewhere.

This could mean either leaking pipes or radiators, underfloor heating systems or other external elements.

Often the problem occurs due to a faulty bleed valve . An abnormal increase in pressure may be due to a malfunction or open make-up valve or damage to the expansion tank membrane.

Optimal operating mode

The optimal operating mode of the boiler is described in detail in the user manual.

Its parameters:

  • Ambient temperature is 70-75°.
  • Water pressure - 0.7-1 mbar.
  • Parameters F08 and F10 are adjusted to the minimum and maximum values respectively.

Adjustments are made during commissioning; additional adjustments are made periodically during annual maintenance or after repair work.

Self-diagnosis

Self-diagnosis is an automatic continuous process that starts immediately when the boiler is turned on for the first time..

It does not require any special actions and runs constantly in the background. Any error is immediately registered by the corresponding sensor, which displays it on the display, and the control board blocks the operation of the unit. To reset the error and restart the boiler, press the “R” button and hold it for several seconds.

Basic error codes and their interpretation

Baxi boiler errors are certain deviations from the nominal operating mode, which are recorded by sensors and displayed on the unit display in the form of a numeric code with the letter e (Error).

Let's take a closer look at them:

Control of BAXI boilers via the Internet

1. BAXI MAGO – programmable room thermostat with network connection via Wi-Fi.

. This device can be used both with BAXI boilers and with boilers of other brands.

BAXI MAGO is connected to the boiler either through a special connector on the board using the OpenTherm protocol (for BAXI condensing boilers), or through the on/off room thermostat connector (for any boilers). The liquid crystal color display and the presence of convenient handles and control buttons provide the user with the comfort of controlling the room temperature when he is at home.

Since BAXI MAGO connects to the Internet via an existing Wi-Fi network, the user can regulate and control the room temperature from a smartphone (tablet) from anywhere in the world. By purchasing BAXI MAGO, the user receives for free a convenient and intuitive application for mobile devices that allows you to maintain the set temperature according to an individual schedule. Using a Wi-Fi channel by the device frees the user from any subscription fee.

When used with BAXI condensing boilers, the BAXI MAGO room thermostat can be connected to the boiler via a special connector on the board using the OpenTherm protocol. In this case, the device provides not only regulation and control of the temperature in the room, but also transmits additional information about the operation of the boiler, such as: - information about blocking with a warning signal and the latest error codes (in case of blocking of the boiler); — coolant temperature; — outside air temperature (when connecting an outside temperature sensor), etc.

The commercial feasibility of selling the BAXI MAGO device in Russia in 2021 is currently being studied.

2.

ZONT thermostats from .

In order to “here and now” have ready-made solutions in Russia for controlling BAXI boilers via the Internet, in September 2021, testing of ZONT thermostats on operating boilers was carried out in the BAXI training class. Representatives took part in the testing.

ZONT thermostats are available in modifications for data transmission via GSM (model ZONT-H1 with its own SIM card) and via Wi-FI (model ZONT-H2). They have a remote room temperature sensor and the ability to control the temperature from a phone (tablet) or from a computer (without the ability to control the temperature directly from the device).

The correct operation of ZONT thermostats through the contacts for the room thermostat is beyond doubt, since this fact has already been confirmed on the market when controlling many boilers, including BAXI boilers.

During testing, ZONT thermostats were connected to both traditional and condensing boilers exclusively via the OpenTherm adapter.

During tests, ZONT thermostats showed excellent compatibility and stable operation with all BAXI boilers. An exception is the Luna-3 Comfort series boilers, since these boilers already have a remote panel, and the OpenTherm protocol does not support parallel connection of two devices.

The presence of an OpenTherm connector on all BAXI boilers and the correct operation of ZONT thermostats with BAXI boilers via an OpenTherm adapter advantageously expands the user's capabilities compared to boilers from other manufacturers. In addition to the standard remote temperature control function, which is available when connected to the contacts intended for a room thermostat, the user can also:

— Receive an alert in case of a boiler failure or power outage. An error code with a text description is displayed.

— Set the maximum and minimum temperature of the coolant, the temperature of heating water in the boiler. — Set a weather-dependent curve (when connecting an outdoor temperature sensor). — See the outside air temperature (when connecting an outside temperature sensor), coolant temperature, modulation level and other information parameters of the boiler.

Additional distinctive features of ZONT thermostats: - Possibility of connecting additional independent temperature sensors (for additional control in different zones) and other devices (for example, leakage sensors and security alarms). — To inform about events, it is possible to register up to 5 mobile phones (when using GSM), or use e-mail (if using the Wi-Fi option). — There is always the opportunity to look at the history of the boiler’s operation, evaluate the total duration of the boiler’s operation and the temperature maintained. Based on the results of these data, you can easily achieve significant savings in gas consumption.

Based on the results of the experiments, BAXI can recommend the use of ZONT thermostats in conjunction with our boilers.
