Recommended adhesives for isolon
Thanks to its uniform cellular structure and elasticity, Izolon is very easy to install. In general, installation is carried out by gluing to the surface, the joints are formed overlapping, welding with a construction hair dryer is possible.
Recommended adhesives: AKROL CONTACT (TU OP 2241-001-32998388-97), aqua spray "NEOPREN 2136", glue 88-NP. It should be remembered that before gluing it is recommended to clean the surfaces from dust, grease, oil, etc.

Types of insulation
The material comes in the following types : roll, sheet, foil and isolon tape.
Rolled isolon has a thickness from 2 to 10 mm, width from 80 to 150 cm, length from 50 to 200 m.

Disadvantages:

Poor air exchange leads to the accumulation of condensate, which causes rotting/corrosion of materials, the development of fungus on concrete and wooden surfaces, and deterioration of the microclimate in the house. The recommended ventilation gap width for interior work is 2-3 cm, i.e. the usable area of the room is reduced by this amount;
- instability to aggressive chemical compounds;
- instability to damage from sharp objects, protective lining is required;
- combustion toxicity;
- Due to its small thickness, Isolon insulation cannot always be used for full insulation. The exception is foil types;

Disadvantages of thermal coating
Due to its rather low strength, isolon can be easily torn or deformed.

Isolon is very common in the modern building materials market. This popularity is explained by its good performance properties , which affects the scope of applications. Today, insulation is widely used in the following industries:
- medical industry;
- arrangement of housing and industrial premises, namely insulation of foundations, roofs, floors, production shops, utility rooms and warehouses;
- repair and production of vehicles;
- production of thermal blankets and various packaging;

Preparation before installation

A subtlety that increases the efficiency of such work is the air cushion between the surface and the insulating coating:
- Wooden planks are fixed to a wall or other surface with a distance between them of no more than 90 cm.
- Install isolon. Fastening must be done sequentially, starting from the top bar. Having stretched the insulation, attach it to the next plank.
- Glue or fasten the joints using any of the technologies used.
If you plan to stick wallpaper over isolon insulation for aesthetic reasons, then you should select thin wallpaper that does not have much weight. Otherwise, the integrity of the isolon may be compromised. Primer is not acceptable.

Laying foil insulation

If one layer of thermal insulation is enough, then you need to lay more waterproofing on top of the isolon, and then proceed to installing the finished floor.

Production technology

First of all, it should be noted that the manufacturing technology of foamed polyethylene consists of several stages. Moreover, some of them require the use of gas, while others do without it.
The general production scheme includes the following elements:
- extruder;
- compressor for gas supply;
- cooling line;
- packaging.
It is worth keeping in mind that the type of equipment used largely depends on what kind of product the manufacturer wants to get in the end. For example, bag-making, pipe-stitching and many other devices and mechanisms can be used. Also, many manufacturers use devices such as flying shears, punching presses, molding machines, etc.
For the direct production of the material, specially designed LDPE and HDPE granules are used (various elements based on them can also be used). In some cases, primary raw materials can be combined with so-called regranulates. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that foamed polyethylene can also be produced from recycled materials. At the same time, it must meet certain requirements, namely, its composition must be free of any impurities, and the raw material itself must have an average molecular weight and be uniform in color.

Color options and cost
Unlike its construction counterpart, izolon for handicrafts has several basic shades.

Kinds
The material manufacturing technology includes three main stages, on the basis of which products are divided into types:
- mixing components , among which there is granulated polyethylene, foaming agent and other components;
- extrusion;
- foaming due to which the foaming agent begins to “work”, which provides a specific structure to the material - as a result, it looks like a porous sheet.
Foil products require another process - during lamination, aluminum foil is fixed to polyethylene.
Taking into account the production method, two types of material can be distinguished.
Cross-linked – PPE
During production, changes occur in components at the molecular level. This group includes products with a cross-ligament and mesh molecular base. The specificity of the composition increases the resistance of the material to aggressive environments, and also increases moisture resistance.
Unstitched – NPE
This variety is distinguished by the almost complete absence of connections between the molecules of the components. Essentially, this is a gas-filled raw material with a closed cell structure. Even at the foaming stage during the heat treatment of the substance, carbon dioxide is added to it. It fills pores that are larger than other materials. In addition, NPE has less flexibility.
Based on the crosslinking method, it is possible to select materials with a chemical or physical option for performing this task.
However, depending on the type of crosslinking, there is no difference in quality characteristics and appearance between the materials.
Taking into account the structure, isolon can be foil-coated or uncoated.
Foil
Its composition is similar to the standard type, the only difference is the presence of film on one or both sides. The film can be made of aluminum or have a metallized composition. The products have high performance characteristics and are therefore recommended for use inside and outside buildings. The choice of products depends on the scope of application, for example, if Izolon is needed for flooring, they prefer to purchase products with heat-reflecting film, positioning it so that the side with the film is at the top.
Uncoated Products
The material does not contain additional layers, due to which its properties are slightly reduced. The cost of such products is an order of magnitude lower.
Depending on the fastening technology, certain types of raw materials are distinguished.
Covering
The material can be glued to the base overlapping if the thickness is small, or end-to-end if you plan to use large sheets. For installation, construction tape is used, which is responsible for the tightness of the seams between the products.
Self-adhesive material
Its installation is carried out to the enclosed base; fastening is carried out only after the protective film has been removed from the side that has the adhesive layer.
In addition to the main varieties, several more types of products can be distinguished, which are marked using a special abbreviation:
- Izolon “A” – products with an aluminum layer on one side, its thickness can reach 10 mm;
- brand “B” – products with closed foil on both sides;
- “C” is a type of thermal insulation that has a self-adhesive base;
- ALP is a self-adhesive raw material having a white film on foil, the thickness of which is 3 mm.
Production stages
The isolon production process is divided into three main stages:
- Mixing. In one container, polyethylene in granules, a foaming agent and “cross-linking” agents are combined, that is, substances that irreversibly transform polymer molecules.
- Extrusion. The polymer mass heats up and melts. In parallel with this, future isolon sheets are formed.
- Foaming. The sheets are sent to the oven on a conveyor belt. Under the influence of high temperature, the foaming agent is activated, and many pores are formed in the structure of the material.
When producing foil-coated isolon, at the last stage, thin aluminum foil is glued to a layer of foamed polyethylene using the lamination method.

The choice of material depends on the purpose. For sound insulation of interfloor ceilings and floor insulation, isolon with a thickness of 0.8 mm to 1 cm is most often used. When installing heated floors - from 2 to 4 mm, for laying laminate - from 2 to 3 mm.
