10/31/2017 3432 Pechnik (Moscow) A floor-standing gas boiler with a coaxial chimney is a universal heating unit that can be installed and placed in a private cottage or in a standard apartment building. This device is characterized by high efficiency and productive operation. Floor-standing boilers with a coaxial chimney always have only a closed combustion chamber, since combustion products should not penetrate into the room. At their core, such devices do not have a chimney, in its standard form, and are installed in rooms of any size.
For detailed information, we recommend reading the following materials, as well as watching the video in this article.

This budget equipment is a replacement for the legendary previous generation model EGIS. The model is suitable for rooms from 150 to 200 m². A 24 kW double-circuit with 2 independent heat exchangers made of different materials: the primary one is made of aluminum, which is very, very controversial, but the DHW heat exchanger is made of copper, which, of course, is good news. Efficiency is about 93%. There are some convenient automations for comfort. The saving mode has been thought out: summer, summer/winter. This allows you not to turn on the heating in the summer, but to turn on only the hot water supply circuit. There is a condensate collector.

As a rule, there are two main types of coaxial chimneys for a gas boiler: vertical and horizontal chimneys. The vertical chimney is discharged through the ceilings onto the roof, the horizontal chimney is discharged from the connected heating equipment through the wall to the outside.
A coaxial chimney is usually installed with boilers that have a floor or wall location.
Wall-mounted boilers have more compact dimensions and, accordingly, lower thermal power. Such boilers are ideal for heating small living spaces.
Floor-standing boilers have increased power and higher efficiency.
The direction of the chimney is determined based on the individual situation.
If the boiler has a forced air circulation function, then a horizontal coaxial chimney is installed. An overview of the types and characteristics of Shidel chimneys here: https://mykaminz.ru/dymoxod/proizvoditeli/obzor-vidov-i-xarakteristik-dymoxodov-schiedel.html.
In addition to gas boilers, solid fuel boilers are very popular. Since the temperature of the exhaust gases when operating solid fuel boilers is much higher than when operating gas boilers, it is recommended to install coaxial chimneys made of AISI 321 steel.
A coaxial chimney, when installed in a wooden house, can have both a horizontal and vertical direction, but it is worth paying attention to where the steam will escape from the pipe, for example, whether there are plantings or trees nearby, as well as building materials or what - or equipment.

An example of installing a coaxial chimney
For greater clarity, you can show a step-by-step example of how to hang a Neva Lux 18 Turbo gas boiler, with the simultaneous installation of a coaxial chimney with a passage through the wall.
Illustration | Brief description of the operations performed |
This is what the boiler looks like. It is clearly shown that on its upper wall there is a double pipe for connecting a coaxial chimney.
In the example under consideration, in advance, even during the construction of the house, a window was provided for laying a chimney pipe. It was decided to install a sleeve in it, which will form an even, neat channel. Since the outer diameter of the coaxial pipe is 100 mm, a section of a regular sewer pipe with a diameter of 110 mm is used as a sleeve. The length of this sleeve is made such that it ends flush with the surface of the wall both outside and inside. This will allow you to subsequently cover the passage area with the selected finish without any problems.
In accordance with the recommendations in the installation instructions for this boiler, the horizontal coaxial chimney should be set to a slight slope towards the street. This can be immediately foreseen at this stage by setting the slope of the installed sleeve.
After giving the sleeve the desired position, it can be temporarily fixed, for example, by wedging it with wooden wedges. The remaining voids around the sleeve will be filled with polyurethane foam.
The coaxial system itself in this case is no different in complexity. Immediately from the outlet adapter there is a straight section of pipe passing through the wall on which the boiler will be hung. That is, the direction of the pipe is straight back through the wall, without unnecessary turns.
The first “fitting” is carried out to see how the pipes will be joined to the unit.
Having the exact location of the passage of the coaxial pipe through the wall, it is easy to hang the boiler itself, so that everything coincides with an accuracy of literally a fraction of a millimeter. A full-scale template diagram attached to the boiler installation instructions will help with this. The diagram also shows the possible locations of the chimney adapter in three options (with the direction to the left, right and back, and the points for attaching the boiler to the wall.
With such a template, the task is simplified to the limit. Since the chimney will be directed backwards, a round window is cut out in the diagram to correspond to this position of the adapter. This window is a kind of cross-sectional projection of a coaxial pipe going into the wall.
That is, it is enough to align the window with the channel already installed in the wall, and then align the edge of the boiler drawing vertically, checking using a laser level (there is no laser level - you can get by with an ordinary one or even a plumb line).
Once the template has been accurately aligned, all that remains is to make marks on the wall at the points indicated on it where the fasteners should be located (in this case, these will be dowel hooks). After making the marks, it would be useful to check again using a level - both points should be located on the same horizontal line.
Holes are drilled in the wall, and the hooks included with the boiler are prepared for hanging.
Dowel plugs are first driven into the drilled holes...
...and then the hooks are screwed into them.
Then the cauldron is lifted (it is better to do this together) and carefully hung on the hooks.
The boiler is suspended, and its pipes are precisely located under the channel made in the wall. That is, there should be no problems when installing the chimney.
The space between the wall and the sleeve is filled with polyurethane foam. After it expands and completely hardens, you can remove the wooden wedges and trim off the excess.
In accordance with the instructions for the boiler, the required insert is selected from the supplied kit. These inserts have different diameters of the internal passage, and with their help, the optimal operating mode of all systems is achieved - the balance of air supply and exhaust of combustion products. Recommendations for the correct choice of liner are given in the technical documentation.
The insert is installed in the internal pipe of the coaxial outlet of the boiler, that is, in the exhaust channel for combustion products.
The insert fell into place.
From the street side, a coaxial pipe is inserted into the sleeve. It should already be (if necessary, of course) cut to the required size, taking into account the required exit of the head from the outside of the wall.
You can immediately put a decorative plastic flange on the pipe.
You can proceed to installing the tap adapter in its place. Please note that in the demonstrated system, a socket connection with sealing collars is provided not only for the internal, but also for the external pipe. That is, when connecting parts, there is no need to install a wide outer cuff and then tighten the clamp. The task turns out even simpler.
One wide rubber cuff and one clamp are still included in the system. But they are intended only for the adapter connection unit on the boiler pipes. The cuff is put on the outer pipe of the adapter from the side that will be connected to the boiler.
The adapter is installed on its “socket” and pushed down so that the central pipe of the boiler fits into the socket of the central pipe until it stops.
After this, the adapter-bend is carefully turned in the desired direction - towards the pipe passing through the wall. Further, coordination of the actions of both workers is required. One indoors directs the pipes into the adapter sockets, and the second ensures the forward movement of the pipes outside. It is necessary to ensure that both (external and internal) pipes of the coaxial chimney fit into the sockets to the full possible length, all the way. No more is required here. If the markings were made accurately, then there should be no problems with the installation of this unit.
After the upper unit is mounted, you can finish with the lower one. The cuff goes down until it stops at the flange that secures the pipe to the boiler body. This will seal the air supply channel. The internal channel, as we remember, is already sealed due to the bell-shaped connection with the internal sealing collar.
The next step is to install the plastic clamp and tighten it securely with two screws. Essentially, the work on the boiler side is complete.
And on the street, all that remains is to fill the remaining cavities between the sleeve and the wall with polyurethane foam (for some reason the master has not done this yet), and then put on a decorative elastic flange.
This flange will well camouflage the place where the pipe passes through the wall, protecting it from precipitation, wind and ultraviolet rays.
This is the section of the coaxial chimney that turned out to be on the street. After carefully checking all connections, the work can be considered complete. |

Advantages and disadvantages of coaxial chimneys
A double-circuit module , in essence, is a kind of heat exchanger in which countercurrent contact of the hot (flue gases) and cold (air mixture) air phase occurs through the wall. This design:
- provides increased fire safety of the chimney, due to a decrease in the temperature of exhaust combustion products and minimizing the possibility of a fire;
- increases the efficiency of the boiler, since the heated air mixture ensures the most complete (up to 100%) combustion of gas in the furnace and reduces heat loss;
- does not require an expensive forced ventilation system, since the closed circuit guarantees the absence of harmful emissions in the room;
- compact compared to separate air supply/smoke exhaust systems and does not require a reinforced foundation;
- allows the chimney to be discharged into the wall, and not just onto the roof of the building;
- allows the use of both standard vertical and horizontal or inclined pipe arrangements.
One of the main disadvantages of coaxial models is the possibility of freezing of the air channel due to moisture condensation.
Highly productive systems with a minimum exhaust pipe diameter are especially susceptible to this when the ambient temperature drops (below -15°C). In addition, vertical coaxial chimneys require the mandatory installation of a condensate collector, which increases their cost.

Features of coaxial boilers
Boilers of this type received their name from the combustion product removal system used. The chimney has a design that can most easily be described as a “pipe within a pipe.” The inner pipe acts as a means of removing combustion products, which have a high temperature and heat the air flowing through the outer pipe. As a result, preheated air enters the gas burner, which ensures higher heat transfer.
The second feature of the boilers is the use of a return heating system in the condensing heat exchanger. Thanks to this technology, the “return” flows into the boiler with a higher coolant temperature and requires less natural gas to heat it.

How to protect a coaxial chimney from icing and wind?
The presence of icing on the chimney head indicates errors made during the installation process. Here's how to protect your pipe from ice :
- Install a special nozzle that prevents the formation of ice, even if installed incorrectly.
- If the condensate drain is installed, you should move the chimney head 45-55 cm further from the wall. If there is no condensate drain, then the pipe should be tilted towards the boiler - this will facilitate the flow of moisture into the collector.
Note! When installing a coaxial chimney in a multi-story building, it must be equipped with an anti-icing nozzle.
It is equally important to protect the chimney from the wind, otherwise reverse draft will appear, which will bring combustion products back into the apartment. This can be prevented by using the following measures:
- installation of diaphragms and windproof elements;
- correct position of the chimney relative to windows, doors and neighboring buildings; the pipe should be located at a distance of more than 1 m from the window openings.

The installation of a gas boiler pipe itself is not particularly difficult.
To lay a coaxial chimney, you must remember that the slope of non-condensing boilers is towards the street. This is done so that the condensation that forms drains onto the street. Relative to the boiler, the chimney can be moved either to the right, or to the left, or even behind its wall.
There are certain rules for installing a coaxial chimney for a gas boiler that must be followed. Consider these rules for optimal functioning:
- according to the installation rules, it is necessary to have at least 0.5 m or more of a distance inside the room from the wall to the boiler so that icing does not occur, which can subsequently get on the boiler;
- according to the rules, the maximum length of the chimney for a gas boiler should not exceed more than 3 m;
- the height from the pipe to the ceiling indoors must be at least 0.2 m long;
- the coaxial pipe itself on the street side must be at least 0.3 m long;
- the distance from the pipe itself to the ground is 2, preferably 2.5 m;
- the distance from the end of the chimney pipe to the nearest wall is 0.6 or 1.5 m;
- the nearest windows or ventilation openings should not be located closer than 0.6 m from the chimney outlet;
- The diameter of the chimney pipe should not exceed the diameter of the boiler outlet.
Ice formed due to accumulated condensation
The passport for each boiler contains information about what diameter the pipe should be and what the maximum length of the coaxial chimney can be. It is not recommended to exceed these data, because the performance of the boiler unit will drop significantly. The diameter of the pipeline is written in the passport data in the article after the letter value. It consists of four digits. The first two indicate the internal diameter, and the last digits indicate the external diameter of the inlet pipe. According to the rules, the length of a coaxial chimney for a gas boiler cannot be more than 3 m. However, some manufacturers set their own restrictions on the products they produce. So before installation, you should carefully study the instructions. The question of how to lengthen the coaxial pipe of a gas boiler is easily resolved. The pipes are assembled according to the “father-mother” type. At corners, the use of rotary couplings at angles of 45 and 90 degrees is provided. Sealant on joints is prohibited. The adapters provide for the installation of sealing rubber bands that can withstand heating of 250°. It is advised to reduce turns and angles to a minimum to ensure better traction. The entire length is provided with the use of fastening clamps.
Now let’s look at the following question: how to install a coaxial pipe for a gas boiler and what are the steps to install it.
Step one involves determining the place in the room where the gas boiler with a coaxial chimney will be located, depending on its type. The marking of the outlet of the coaxial chimney for a gas boiler is carried out on the wall where the boiler is located, at a distance of one and a half meters from it. The width of the hole should be slightly larger than the outer size of the pipe. The chimney is attached to the boiler using an elbow. The joints and corners are fastened with clamps.
Important! Adhesive tapes and sealants are strictly prohibited when installing coaxial chimneys.
The distance between the pipe and the wall in the hole is insulated with non-flammable material. If the boilers provide for the use of forced ventilation, the chimney is installed only horizontally.
Important! In order to rotate the pipe, a rotary elbow is used. There cannot be more than 2 elbows on the pipeline.
The coaxial pipe in question is attached to the wall of the gas boiler using brackets. Each joint is provided with one bracket. It is not recommended to install additional components on the head (end) of pipes.
A coaxial chimney can be routed through a wall or through the roof. To output through the roof, you will need additional components that allow you to pass through the transitions of the ceiling and roof. A matching cap will be required at the top. After installation, the integrity of the entire system is checked.
If the boiler runs on diesel fuel, it is equipped with a coaxial chimney for a diesel boiler from Kiturami, a company that is considered one of the popular manufacturers of chimneys.
Kiturami products have a number of their own features. They are sold with a fan built into them, the function of which is to create artificial draft in the chimney device.
The advantages of chimneys produced by this company include:
- fire safety and environmental friendliness;
- low boiler output temperature, allowing installation in wooden houses;
- increasing the efficiency of boilers;
- ease of maintenance and installation;
- creating comfort and improving the microclimate in the building.
Important information: the result of diesel combustion is the formation of condensate of an acidic composition, which can destroy metals. The insulation and condensate collector, combined with stainless steel in Kiturami chimneys, provide the product with resistance to corrosion, prevent soot from accumulating, and ensure a long service life for the device.

Installation nuances
Installation of gas boilers with a coaxial chimney begins with reading the equipment manufacturer's instructions and checking the presence of all components according to the diagram.
The installation location is selected in such a way as to maintain a minimum horizontal distance of 0.5 m from window and door openings and various ventilation openings. The vertical distance from the same passages should be at least 1 m. Side walls, columns and protrusions (obstacles to air flow) can be no closer than 1.5 m. The distance of the chimney exit from the wall to the ground surface is 2 m.
Installation is carried out in this order:
- At a point that satisfies these conditions, a hole is drilled corresponding to the Ø of the output pipe.
- A chimney is inserted into the resulting opening (sloping outward) and connected to the boiler using a covering clamp. The remaining gap is filled with foam. The head can be secured with construction adhesives, since the outer surface of the pipe has a fairly low temperature.
- In accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, an in-house power supply circuit, gas pipeline connections, and water circuit are assembled and tested.
Attention! The requirements for installation of coaxial installations specified in the manufacturer's instructions are mandatory. They contain conditions on the minimum distance to surrounding objects (service area, passages), power supply parameters. Depending on specific conditions, it may be necessary to install voltage stabilizers, a diesel generator, for stable operation of the pump, fan, and automation during the cold season. Parapet heating systems
One of the types of gas chimney boilers is parapet. The design resembles the design of condensing equipment. The main difference from the latter is the presence of a closed combustion chamber. During operation, air, which is inevitably consumed during combustion, enters the firebox not from the room itself, but from the street, therefore, overheating does not occur and the oxygen concentration does not decrease. As a result of this method of operation, the efficiency, environmental friendliness and efficiency of equipment increase
It is important to remember that some types of equipment, in addition to the traditional heat exchanger, have a convection casing in their design, which allows you to heat the room, consuming less gas, that is, with greater efficiency. There are mounted types of parapet equipment, which are mostly energy-dependent and also require additional power from electrical networks
At the same time, floor-standing units are completely energy independent.
