Teploknauf or Rockwool? Comparison of insulation for a country house

Mineral wool is a porous material for organizing a heat, noise and fire protective layer. It is used in systems of ventilated roofs and facades, for insulation and fire protection of utility lines.

Mineral wool loses its insulating properties due to humidity. In a living room, condensation from a cold wall accumulates between the fibers, which is why the material retains heat less well and settles under its own weight. You can prevent moisture from entering by carefully covering the insulation layer with a vapor-proof film (only from the room side). The thermal insulation cake of a ventilated attic roof, in addition to the internal vapor barrier, must have an external vapor-permeable membrane.

In the following video, the author tells how to choose mineral wool based on the building design and climatic conditions, about the installation procedure and technology:

In this article we reviewed the products of popular manufacturers.
For clarity, we have summarized their main characteristics and prices in a table: Summary table of mineral wool manufacturers

In structure, all mineral wool is identical. Each manufacturer offers a similar range, with similar ranges of basic characteristics.

Main characteristics

  • Density is a characteristic that shows how many kilograms of stone fiber are contained in 1 cube of mineral wool. The denser the material, the better its insulating properties and the higher the price.
  • Thermal conductivity is the ability of a material to conduct heat. The lower the coefficient, the more effective the insulation.
  • Flammability is the ability to burn independently.

Environmental friendliness depends on the origin of the binder. Artificial resins are toxic, natural substances are harmless.

What are the differences

Rockwell is made on the basis of basalt fiber, and Ursa with isover is made on the basis of fiberglass.
The differences between these materials are as follows: - basalt materials have higher thermal insulation properties - the hygroscopicity of materials based on basalt fiber is less than 1%. (in Isover and Ursa, since their structure contains fiberglass, the hygroscopicity is 10-20% higher than that of rockwell) - basalt fibers are more resistant to alkalis and steam - during installation of isover and ursa, the release of the smallest particles of fiberglass is observed - the thorniness of rockwell much lower than that of materials made from glass fibers - in the event of a fire, Isover and Ursa begin to burn out at lower temperatures than Rockwell

Rockwool (Elabuga, Troitsk, Vyborg, Zheleznodorozhny)

On the domestic market, Rockwool products are presented in a wide range. There are suitable materials for insulation:

  • roofing (Roof Butts);
  • facades (Facade Butts);
  • internal structures (Light Butts),
  • for soundproofing rooms (Acoustic Butts) and solving other problems.

In the Russian Federation, 15 basic lines with more than 50 variants of mineral wool products are sold. Among others: single- and multi-layer rectangular slabs; long mats in rolls; cylindrical coiled products for thermal insulation of pipes; slope-forming elements.

The manufacturer claims that the main advantage is multi-component functionality (“4 in 1” - environmental friendliness, durability, fire safety and acoustic comfort), characteristic of any product based on Rockwool mineral wool.

Disadvantages of insulation appear due to violations of installation technology.

Hello.
After the price of insulation dropped, I noticed a decrease in density. Before this, I insulated the house with this insulation; the mats were denser and of better quality. People, don't buy this material, the quality is starting to suffer. Advantages:
Until recently, density.
Disadvantages:
After the price reduction, the density and quality of the material decreased.

I want to warn all owners of aerated concrete houses under construction, do not be greedy on insulation.
Take at least 100 mm. First of all, it will protect you from the risk of moisture accumulation between the thermal insulation and aerated concrete. If aerated concrete absorbs moisture, it will not turn out well. In addition, there should be no gaps, otherwise you will encounter mold. We are already remodeling our second house, the owners “save money.” This insulation is suitable, you can take it. Name:

Personally, I liked this product.
After unpacking, you need to give it 5-10 minutes to regain its shape. The mats are dense and heavy. They hold well in the frame. I installed 2 mats and the opening is ready... I don’t know why I previously used 50 mm Rockwool in the form of 50+50+50 in the walls. Now I’m switching to the 100+50 option... Faster installation and more convenient. Advantages:
-dense mats -stick well between the racks

Not a bad product. The thickness is generally 11 cm. The density is not very good, but due to the thickness it stays even in a horizontal position. I don’t think it will slip, but time will tell about shrinkage. In operation it is more similar to hard mineral wool (such as Ursa), it is just as soft, restores its shape, does not break, in general, something in between. There is no smell, almost no stinging.,

Knauf (Stupino, Tyumen)

Knauf has managed to combine the high vapor permeability of glass wool (previously the main product) with the low water absorption and thermal conductivity of mineral wool material.
Each of the thermal insulation options in the innovative Knauf Insulation line is designed to solve specific problems:

  • Knauf Insulation Facade - for insulating walls under ventilated facades and plaster.
  • Knauf Insulation Pitched Roof - for thermal insulation of pitched roofs and attic floors.
  • Knauf Insulation Acoustic Partition – for effective sound absorption.

High profitability with this material is possible when insulating large areas, such as production or retail sites. When building a private house and apartment, you will pay a little more than for conventional material, but you will receive reliably insulated surfaces.

Pros - declared environmental friendliness, due to the absence of a phenol-formaldehyde binder and packaging (a single package reduces the volume of material by half, a multipack - 8 times).

The downside is the modest size range and price.

Ursa (Serpukhov, Chudovo)

The insulation of the Uralita Group concern has been known for its low thermal conductivity for more than 5 years, and today it is presented in six options in different sizes. The young, innovative material “Ursa Pureone”, with a smaller range of dimensions, also managed to receive positive recommendations from professional builders.

Ursa is suitable for:

  • roof thermal insulation (Pureone, Geo);
  • insulation of facades (Terra);
  • performing interior work (Geo Light).

The main advantage of the materials in the Ursa Terra line is their resistance to biological influences. With the correct design of the insulation system, neither rodents nor bacteria are able to adapt both from the inside and in the external walls of the building.

Ursa Pureone has improved environmental and performance characteristics.

The negative aspects of Ursa insulation appear when the rules of transportation and storage are violated.

Isover (Egoryevsk, Chelyabinsk)

More than 20 years ago, the French concern Saint Gobain officially opened the Russian building materials market. Over the past 10 years, the company's management has abandoned the import of mineral wool to Russia and opened its own production of products under the Isover brand in the Moscow region. Today, there are two full-cycle production sites in the Russian Federation - in Yegoryevsk and Chelyabinsk.

Isover mineral wool is suitable for ventilated facades and under plaster; for pitched and flat roofs; into internal partitions and doors. The materials are developed in accordance with the operational features and installation specifics for each specified case. The company's catalog presents four main groups:

  • Isover warm – thermal insulation;
  • Isover quiet - Shumka;
  • Isover professional – universal insulation;
  • Isover for a house/apartment - mineral wool with a compromise combination of cost and performance.

The list offers 24 insulating material options.

All plate, roll and blown-in wool versions are packaged in heat-shrinkable polyethylene. This makes it possible to reduce the volume of insulation ready for shipment by 3-5 times (relevant for more efficient transportation).

The positive aspects of Isover are the variety of options. Can be made to your size. Among the existing advantages, the ease of use when filling hard-to-reach areas with blow-in cotton wool stands out.

The downside is the need to use highly specialized equipment (true only for the blown-in version of mineral wool).

Video instructions from Isover on weaving structures:

Durability of various types of insulation

The service life of insulation is determined by the type of structure and operating conditions, so durability should be predicted separately for each specific case. For example, for ventilated facades the choice of insulation is determined by legal restrictions, and in the vast majority of cases the choice will be in favor of basalt wool.

In general, polymer insulation is more durable than fiber insulation. However, high-quality fiber insulation can last for decades if it is not subjected to heavy operating loads.

In addition, fiber insulation also benefits from its unique soundproofing properties. If good sound insulation is a priority for you, then basalt wool or high-quality glass wool is the right choice for you. In addition, glass wool and basalt wool are fireproof. Sound insulation and fire safety are the main reasons for using mineral wool indoors.

For plaster facades, the service life for insulation is approximately as follows:

Basalt wool – 15 years;

Expanded polystyrene – 50 years;

PIR – 30 years.

In pitched roofs, basalt wool can work safely for decades, as it does not experience any stress.

In flat roofs, mineral wool is the weakest choice in terms of durability, but if all technological and operational rules are followed, it can last for decades. In Russian conditions, unfortunately, it is better not to count on this. From our point of view, today the optimal ones, in terms of durability in flat roofs, are PIR and extruded polystyrene foam. Expanded polystyrene, unfortunately, has fire safety restrictions; it can be used in structures with reinforced concrete bases.

In foundations and underground structures , extruded polystyrene foam is indispensable. It is non-hygroscopic, hard, energy efficient and extremely durable.

Izovol (Belgorod)

Izovol general construction and technical insulation is no different in structure from similar mineral wool from other brands. There are differences in technical characteristics. A unique production technology is used. Emphasis is placed on the use of environmentally friendly raw materials.

The list of options for traditional thermal insulation (ST, V, Isobel) is supplemented by mineral wool fireproofing (KV, F series) and soundproofing (Acoustic) materials. Recently, a combined insulation for a bathhouse was announced - mineral wool, laminated (a technique for joining dissimilar materials by pressing) with a thin aluminum sheet. Similar options are found in other manufacturers, but Belgorod innovators reinforced the reflective layer of their invention with fiberglass canvas.

The advantages of Izovol mineral wool are the geometric precision of the elements; ease of processing (with a knife, saw) regardless of density; acceptable cost. The disadvantages are dust (for all products) and phenols (true only for materials produced using old technologies).

The dustiness and toxicity of mineral wool is within international tolerances.
When working, use personal protective equipment; when installing indoors, prevent liquid from coming into contact with the material (a vapor barrier is required); outdoors, you will need a membrane that does not prevent moisture evaporation. Main characteristics of Izovol

Teploknauf or Rockwool? Comparison of insulation for a country house

Choosing insulation for a private home often turns out to be even more painful.
This is due to the fact that all experts have their own opinion regarding insulation. Because of this, choosing between TeploKnauf mineral wool and Rockwool basalt wool can be extremely difficult, and the choice is made mainly in favor of one specific insulation. In order to put an end to the confrontation between TeploKnauf and Rockwool insulation, we will simply compare their main characteristics and explain the differences, if any. For maximum objectivity, materials were taken from the economical price segment intended for wall insulation: RockWool and TeploKnauf Cottage insulation. Information taken from official sources.

Insulation TeploKnauf

Rockwool insulation

The main characteristics of basalt and mineral wool are similar, but there are a couple of significant differences that are worth paying attention to when choosing insulation for a country house.

  1. Thermal conductivity is the main indicator that you need to pay attention to. The higher this value, the more heat will come out of the house; accordingly, the lower it is, the better. A difference of a few hundredths is not particularly critical, but it is better to be sure that the insulation you have chosen will accurately cope with its tasks.
  2. Manufacturers of insulation materials TeploKnauf and Rockwool consider density as one of the main advantages of their product: some claim that higher density is better, others, on the contrary, deliberately reduce it. In fact, to figure out which is more effective, a comparison of a sheepskin coat and a down jacket is perfect. At -30, a down jacket will be a much better solution. Than a heavy sheepskin coat that freezes quickly. For the myth that high density protects better from the cold, we can thank the manufacturers of this same stone wool, who came up with it.
  3. Direct loads mean physical impact on the insulation. TeploKnauf Cottage without auxiliary materials will have a hard time surviving the winter under a flat roof, unlike Rockwool, which, due to its high density, will be easier to withstand pressure.
  4. Due to its high density, basalt wool is easier to install than less dense mineral wool.

The main thing for the end consumer will be that the most expensive basalt wool and economical mineral wool will handle the insulation of floors, walls and ceilings in the same way due to their characteristics.

Good roof insulation is valuable not only in winter - it also saves you from the summer heat and cuts out excess noise from outside. The range of insulating materials is large, but choosing the best option is difficult for an inexperienced person. Too many nuances, unconvincing advertising promises and conflicting reviews. Let's figure out what the modern market offers us, and how we can insulate an attic, a regular roof or an attic.

It is more profitable for a private homeowner to choose reliable material that does not require replacement for at least a dozen or two years. After all, doing major repairs yourself will be difficult and expensive. That is why it is worth choosing products from a well-known brand that protects its reputation and does not produce outright defects. But all famous companies that produce insulation materials must have some unique production technology. So you will have to be especially careful when selecting decent thermal insulation for a roof or attic, correlating new products with your own requirements. And we will help you understand the nuances.

Paroc (Tver region)

Finnish insulation material Paroc with Swedish roots. Known for its impressive range and decent technical characteristics. Since 2013, full-fledged production of Paroc mineral wool has been established in the Russian Federation.

Plate and roll materials, thermo-wound cylinders, pressed bends and segments from the conveyor belt of a Russian plant have the same indicators as imported insulation. Packed in the same shrink film.

Paroc mineral wool is suitable for:

  • roof insulation (ROB);
  • foundation and floor (GRS);
  • internal walls and partitions (Extra Light);
  • façade (WAS), fire protection (FPS) and soundproofing (SSB) systems.

The impressive list of options for the general construction plan is complemented by materials from the category of technical insulation (Pro, Hvac), for heating and ventilation systems, large-scale technological processes, and industrial equipment.

The positive features of Paroc mineral wool are laid down at the structural level - the material is elastic and does not break (and therefore does not generate dust) during installation. Many compatriots will appreciate the manufacturer’s offer to produce the required batch according to the customer’s dimensions.

The disadvantages of cooperation include the relatively high cost and the need for a thorough study of the offered range.
The choice is large, so in the event of an unintentional mistake, there is a high probability of unjustified cost overruns. Main characteristics of Paroc

Beltep (Belarus: Gomel)

Until 2007, the Belarusian enterprise Gomelstroymaterialy worked with varying efficiency and mainly for the domestic market. The popularity of high-quality and relatively inexpensive materials has become an incentive to develop a network of trading houses in the Republic of Belarus and to search for dealers outside the republic. Thus, almost 10 years ago Beltep mineral wool appeared on the construction market of the Russian Federation.

Small assortment:

  • for roofing (RUF);
  • for external walls (Vent, Facade)
  • for internal walls and partitions (Light)
  • on the floor and ceilings (Flor).

In the total mass of the main groups, there are 20 brands of mineral wool insulation. But interest in the products is actively maintained by updating the product list. Today these are materials with an impressive range of data on the main characteristics.

Pros: large selection of sizes, stable quality of each batch.

Disadvantages: low elasticity and a lot of dust during installation.

The best choice for the money, they opened the 7-year-old frame, there was such cotton wool, it didn’t sag even a mm, there were no mice, I recommend
Advantages:
price, does not break, does not sag

Review:
Everything is learned by comparison. I had to work at the same time with standard cheap “glass wool” and this particular Knauf, I insulated the walls, the floor under the house (in two layers), and the floor of the veranda on top, creating a cellular frame and covering it with thick varnished plywood.
By the way, instead of steam and wind protection, for many years I have been using ordinary covering material 40 or 60 kU. This material has become a FAVORITE, not only for me, but also for the children of 5 and 7 years old (with SARS) who help me in my work, and even for a cat, a cat and two dogs who immediately laid on the sheets when they took a horizontal direction )))))) So I confirm the ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANNESS of the material. Advantages:
Compared to glass wool, Knauf: 1) smells nice 2) practically does not crumble, if you don’t shake it, you can work without PPE 3) soft, absolutely not prickly 4) can be easily cut with any knife or scissors 5) can be used perfectly instead tow, easily delaminates, sealing any cracks 6) perfectly compresses 5 times!!!!
Glass wool with difficulty only 1.5. Disadvantages:
Disadvantages (heterogeneity of structure, burnt areas) sometimes exist, but they are absolutely not catastrophic.
FIVE with a slight minus overall rating. Price - of course I would like it to be lower, and not only in particular, but for all products in general)))) Name:

Elastic, including at the edges.
Stands up perfectly. It does not crumble. When installing, you need to take into account that the width is exactly 600, so the distances between the profiles need to be made a little smaller. It really doesn't burn. Installation is very easy and simple. Name:

Review:
Not bad, not bad.

The material is quite durable.
Good for tearing. But the quality varies from batch to batch, namely the uniformity of the structure. I don’t recommend working with the material without a respirator; you’ll end up coughing later! It cuts well with a knife, I used a kitchen cleaver, excellent. However, it is very SMELLY, I mean really stinky. The smell from this material lasts for at least a week, but it depends on everyone’s perception. Separately, I would like to express my gratitude to Leroy Merlin for appearing in Petrozavodsk, for the excellent selection of staff, he is always polite, helpful, and tidy. Thank you! Name:

There are many “reviews” on the Internet about this insulation: it doesn’t prick, doesn’t generate dust, you can work without PPE.
Bought four packs today. The packaging says: use protective clothing, gloves, and a respirator. It is prickly, but much less basaltic; no less dusty; What I didn’t like most of all was that in one package the mats were 59 wide. But this is a specific joint! I had to pervert and cut them crosswise into size 60, and hence a decrease in useful volume and an increase in waste. Please inform the manufacturer that the control must be carried out more carefully; the mats should not be less than 60 in width. Name:

The material is excellent, but in the description of the product the characteristics do not indicate the BASIC parameter - thermal conductivity, which should be used to select based on its purpose.
In this case, this is difficult to do due to the lack of a parameter in the description. for this material the thermal conductivity is 0.034, which classifies it as a professional insulating material. Advantages:
Elastic, stands up well “in space.”
Cuts well with a knife. It produces little dust, but it is still necessary to wear long sleeves and a respirator. Disadvantages:
Significantly more expensive.
The package may contain slabs with different densities. Name:

Doesn't break, doesn't break.
You stuff it into the car without fear of ruining it. It fits in the right position - excellent. It cuts great. You can install it in the wall, but then you need to secure it well to prevent it from slipping. I put it on the floor. Advantages:
Ease of transportation, price/quality.
Disadvantages:
The use of protective equipment is mandatory!

Material calculation

Differences in the dimensions of mineral wool elements can mislead you. Professionals try to save working time. The price of a mistake is the same for everyone - budget overruns and loss of time.

To perform calculations, use an online calculator. It will take into account all the necessary quantities, parameters and conditions.

A small reminder on using the calculator:

  • Please note that not all Russian settlements are represented in the list of cities. Therefore, try to choose options that are minimally distant from the location of your home. This is important because this parameter determines the average winter temperatures;
  • all numerical values (thickness) are displayed in millimeters. Just in case: 1 m is 100 cm or 1000 mm;
  • We recommend looking at the detailed characteristics of insulation on the manufacturers’ websites. There you will also find recommended prices for this type of product;
  • All calculations are approximate, so it would not be superfluous to add 10% to the results obtained.

Having obtained the thickness of the thermal insulation as a result of calculations and knowing the area of the walls, it is easy to calculate the volume of insulation. We hope this is helpful.
