LPG gas instantaneous water heater

What kind of gas is in the cylinders?

The gas cylinder used to heat water contains gases such as propane and butane. They are by-products of oil, gasoline and gas refining. The cylinders may contain only technical butane or a mixture of butane and propane, which is available in summer and winter.

Compression of these gases converts them into a liquid of a smaller volume (and therefore such a gas is called liquefied), and as the pressure decreases, this liquid begins to turn into a vapor state. Since an increase in temperature causes a strong expansion of liquefied gases, the cylinder is usually filled to 85% of its volume, so there is always a layer of vapor gas above the liquid gases.

Why are they often used in the country?

For a dacha, choosing a heater that uses gas from a cylinder as an energy source is often the only way to get hot water in a dacha. In situations where there is no main gas pipeline connected to the dacha, and there are also problems with the electrical network, a gas water heater of this type will be a real salvation.

Connection to a liquefied gas cylinder

First of all, you need to make sure that your gas water heater is configured to use the gas that is present in the cylinder. If required, work is carried out to re-adjust the column by replacing the collector nozzles and assessing the tightness of the connections. In this case, the equipment must be marked with the date of reconfiguration and the type of gas that can be used in the device.

The cylinder that will be connected to the gas water heater must be equipped with a reducer with a stabilization pressure of 300 mm water column, as well as a minimum vapor phase capacity of 1 m³ per hour. They also pay attention to the selection of the hose - its length should be up to two and a half meters, and the internal diameter should be from 12 millimeters. It is important to purchase a hose that can withstand working with a dispenser on a gas cylinder.

When installing the hose, do not bend or twist it. If the hose has to be installed with a bend, adapters are used for this and the radius of the bend is monitored (it should not be less than 90 mm along its outer line). In addition, the hose must not bend within 50 mm of the ends of the nozzles.

The installation of a gas shut-off valve must be carried out in front of the column so that this valve can be easily reached. After completion of installation work, the hose and other connections should be checked to ensure that leaks are detected in a timely manner. Only after this can the column be used to heat water.

A liquefied gas water heater has several differences. During connection, the difference in the characteristics of propane and methane and the differences during fuel combustion are taken into account.

Connecting equipment to the cylinder

Before you start connecting the equipment yourself, make sure that the model is really suitable.

Other brands of acceptable equipment: , (almost all the latest models). The instructions for the Bosch speakers indicate that a 50-liter cylinder will be enough for 10 hours of stable operation at a power of 25 kW. A conversion kit for Bosch speakers can be purchased from an authorized service center.

If it is necessary to carry out work on reconfiguring equipment, replacing collector nozzles and assessing the tightness of joints, they must be done strictly according to the rules. The nozzles must be smaller in diameter: as in gas stoves, the pressure produced by liquefied gas reducers is 2–3 times higher than when natural gas is supplied through pipes. At the same time, the calorific value of liquid fuel is 1.5 times greater than that of natural gas.

The equipment must be marked with a refurbishment date - day, month and year. The type of gas suitable for use is also indicated.

The connection diagram of the cylinder to the main valve requires it to have a reducer with pressure stabilization of 300 mm of water. Art. and a minimum steam phase productivity of one cubic meter per hour.

Parameters of the hose connecting gas equipment to the fuel tank:

  • 250 cm - minimum length;
  • 1.2 cm is the least permissible inner diameter of the tube.

Important! When installing the hose tube, do not bend or twist it under any circumstances. Even if bending is required, use adapters and watch the radius - it cannot be less than 9 cm along the outer arc. And also do not bend the hose earlier than 5 cm from the end of its tips.

Please note that on online forums there is information of the following nature: if you reconfigure the column correctly and carry out the work without flaws, problems with water pressure may arise and the column will not start. Then you will need to additionally install a pressure pump.

When installing a shut-off valve, remember that it must be easy to access so that in the event of an emergency the user can quickly turn it off.

After completing the installation work, check the tightness of the connections and conduct a test run of the equipment.

Gas water heaters running on liquefied gas of this model have a flueless, turbocharged evaporation removal system. The burned gas escapes through a coaxial pipe. The big advantage is that the device can operate on both flowing and liquefied gas. The equipment is not included in the kit; you will have to purchase it separately. Reconfiguration is easy, and the quality of work does not decrease from changing fuel. The geyser is equipped with technical innovations and functions: a draft and flame extinction sensor, overheating and gas supply fuses. There is an electronic control board installed here, which is incredibly sensitive to power fluctuations. The cost of the equipment is quite high, and any power surge can render it unusable.

Advice! To protect yourself from possible speaker damage due to power surges, you should purchase a stabilizer.

This is a double-circuit gas boiler, which is used to heat water and heat the room. A definite plus is the ability to change the operating mode: on liquefied gas or natural gas. Antifreeze protection, several degrees of protection and safety. The heater is quite noisy when turned on and in use. Sometimes it turns on and off for no reason, accompanied by a loud bang. During use it does not produce the declared characteristics. The maximum temperature of 85°C cannot be reached; the output temperature is 60-65°C. The boiler is unreliable: the sensors quickly fail or do not work, sometimes the pressure drops for no reason. It is expensive, but the money paid does not show up in practice. The manufacturer sets a certain high amount based on the declared functions and characteristics. When used, these functions are not used or quickly fail.

A thermal sensor is installed in the hot water circuit, which controls the degrees of outgoing water. Nova Florida Delfis CTFS 24 AF is one of the representatives of the well-known line of compact heaters. It is intended for use in domestic conditions, but not in enterprises.

For the convenience of users, management is simplified and emphasis is placed on reducing fuel and electricity consumption. The case has been lightened and new technologies have been used to make the equipment as compact and invisible as possible in a residential area.

The cost is high because the heater is double-circuit and is used simultaneously for heating and water heating. However, the high price is not justified by the high quality. The purchased product will be used for its intended purpose and will show good results. But small parts fail very quickly. The boiler requires constant maintenance and replacement of individual elements.

Its power is enough to heat a private house or country mansion. Hot water is produced constantly, in unlimited quantities. There is a function for calculating and limiting water consumption. Here the buyer pays money for reliability, comfort and convenience. The ability to operate from natural and liquefied gas gives the equipment the widest possible range of applications. The electronic board works properly, but is afraid of voltage surges. High efficiency will provide you with a constant supply of hot water with minimal fuel consumption. If you can’t decide which gas water heater to buy for liquefied gas, you should pay attention to this model.

Neva

This LPG instantaneous gas water heater has a small capacity for its power. Because of this, the high temperature can only be in one tap. If you turn on several at the same time, both will get unsatisfactory results. This model is the cheapest of the entire model range of the company. The main disadvantage is the lack of outlet temperature control. The column is quite noisy when ignited and in operation. Even with a small stream it works, but there is a loud bang. Among the advantages are low price, ease of operation and further maintenance, the ability to work on natural and liquefied gas. There are more successful examples in the company's assortment. They have a slightly higher cost, but the ease of use is much better.

How does a liquefied gas dispenser work?

The difference between water heaters using main gas and liquefied gas is in the design of the burner. To understand the difference, you need to imagine exactly how fuel combustion occurs:

  • It is not the gas itself that burns, but the gas-air mixture, which is prepared as it passes from the nozzle to the burner nozzle.
  • The proportions of methane or propane and oxygen must be strictly observed. A mixture that is rich in air will burn poorly, and a mixture that is poor will smoke.
  • The supply speed of propane and methane to the burner is different. Bottled gas is supplied under pressure several times higher than that produced by a household gas pipeline. Accordingly, in order to create normal conditions for fuel combustion, it is necessary to reduce the propane supply rate and stabilize the pressure, which is achieved by changing nozzles and installing a reducer.

If we talk about technical operating conditions, then the possibility of installing an instantaneous or storage water heater using liquefied gas exists in any private home. Unlike connecting to the main gas, there is no need to obtain various permits and prepare a project. The boiler can be connected to one or several cylinders or a gas tank.

Reviews of liquefied gas dispensers show that there is a working nuance that is often not taken into account when connecting. It consists in the following. Propane is pumped into cylinders under pressure, causing it to become a liquid. Gas fills the container approximately ⅔. The liquid evaporates from the surface, after which it enters the reducer and from there it is supplied to the water heater burner.

The difficulty lies in the fact that evaporation occurs with the simultaneous removal of heat. As a result, with high fuel consumption, freezing of the cylinder walls is observed. How to solve the problem is described in the subheading, which describes the nuances of connection.

How to convert a dispenser from methane to propane

Re-equipment is carried out by replacing some components of the water heater and correctly connecting to a gas cylinder installation. Conversion to propane requires:

  • change the nozzles on the main burner, depending on the boiler model there are 12-15 of them;
  • if a semi-automatic ignition system is used, the jets on the wick are replaced.

In the same way, you can convert a regular gas water heater from natural gas to liquefied gas. The difference is that in universal models, the factory kit already contains nozzles and jets of the required diameter.

The instantaneous water heater is configured to operate on liquefied gas using a mechanical control unit. The body of the water heater is equipped with rotary knobs or levers that regulate the gas pressure supplied to the burner. The optimal mode is considered to be one in which the flames have a bluish-blue color.

What is the propane consumption in a gas water heater?

The exact costs are indicated in the passport for the boiler. For example, Bosh gas flow columns, powered by bottled gas and having a capacity of 25 kW, continuously consume 1 cylinder of fuel per 50 liters for 10 hours.

Costs can be affected by the type of fuel (winter or summer) and its quality. Gas consumption in self-converted water heaters that are not designed to burn propane is usually 5-10% higher. Errors made when connecting equipment are also reflected in costs.

When is liquefied gas heating used?

There are no direct prohibitions or restrictive measures on autonomous heating of a private home with gas cylinders. However, heating a home with liquefied gas from a cylinder is not always rational, since obtaining thermal energy in this way requires significant expenses.

Heating a house from a gas cylinder is beneficial only if:

  • heated room area up to 100 m2;
  • organizing good thermal insulation of the home;
  • minimizing heat loss.

The arrangement of heating a private house with gas is carried out using ordinary 50-liter cylinders with propane or butane, which are compressed to a liquid state.

In summer and winter, different mixtures of flammable substances are used:

  • SPBTL (flight combination);
  • SPBTZ (winter mixture).

In winter, the tanks must be constantly monitored, as interruptions in the fuel supply are possible due to the difference in boiling temperatures of the mixture components (propane -40°C, butane 0°C). As a result, at a temperature of, for example, -10°C, the pressure in the vessel will drop below the level required for the normal functioning of the system. Then the cylinder will have to be heated to at least 0°C so that the butane begins to evaporate.

Attention! It is strictly forbidden to heat cylinders that are located in a private house at subzero temperatures with heating elements or heating cables.

Connecting the column to bottled gas

The cylinder is connected to the gas water heater through a flexible hose with a diameter of 1.2 cm. It is best to choose a tube made of stainless steel. The connected cylinder must be equipped with a reducer with a pressure gauge. When connecting, the hose should not twist or bend. If a bend is still necessary, then its radius should not be less than 9 cm, and it should begin at least 5 cm before the tip. To prevent kinks from appearing, it is necessary to use adapters and corner joints.

Cylinders are usually placed outside in a metal cabinet, and the column is installed in the house. The flexible pipeline is pulled through the hole in the wall.

bottled fuel dispenser

Having connected the hose, place a shut-off valve in front of the column, which should be easily accessible. After installation, the system must be checked for gas leaks.

If in the summer the owners permanently live at the dacha, and the fuel in one cylinder quickly runs out, then it is recommended to install several containers and connect them to the comb (manifold). This will allow you to automatically switch the gas intake from the container that has run out of gas to the next full cylinder.

How to autonomously heat a country house with gas?

Some owners install gas holders on their property - special containers for storing liquefied gas, which can have different sizes.

The gas water heater will operate stably using liquefied fuel if there is a supply pressure of up to 0.2-0.3 mBar. It is recommended to make the connection according to the following scheme: the cylinders are combined using a ramp of 2, 4, 8 pieces, an adjustable reducer is installed.

propane cylinders

Liquefied fuel consumption

The gas consumption of a propane gas water heater depends on its characteristics, and especially on its power. For example, the instructions for Bosch devices with a power of 25 kW say that a 50-liter container should be enough for 10 hours of stable operation. The Baxi SIG-2 14i dispenser consumes fuel up to 2.14 kg/hour with a possible domestic hot water production of 12.6 l/min. Ariston NEXT EVO SFT 11 NG EXP has a capacity of 11 l/min, consuming only 0.8 kg/h.

Thus, the consumer can choose a device with optimal power and low fuel consumption.

What volume of gas cylinder to choose

Based solely on current propane costs, it will be enough to install one 50 liter cylinder. Even with uneconomical consumption of liquefied gas, the fuel should last for 10-15 days. And this is assuming a large family of 4-5 people. The technical data sheet for water heaters states that a 50 liter gas cylinder is enough for 10-12 hours of continuous operation.

Experts recommend connecting a propane dispenser through a ramp. Thus, it is possible to reduce the load when operating a gas water heater from one to several gas cylinders, evenly distributing fuel consumption and preventing freezing of the walls and reducer. Connection via a ramp allows you to install several smaller containers of 25/40 liters each. Or, as an option, use 50 liter cylinders connected in conjunction with each other.

There is no main gas, it is not supplied.

But you need hot water, can a gas water heater run from a gas cylinder, or do they only run from mains gas?

You need to open the passport of the gas instantaneous water heater (column), only in this way you can decide what gas can be used.

Of course, the vast majority of geysers operate on mains gas, and not on bottled (liquefied) gas.

But there are universal gas water heaters on sale that can operate on both main gas and bottled gas.

We have this one

But the reconfiguration must be carried out by specialists with a license, a special one is placed in the product passport, and Bosch is not the only manufacturer of such water heaters; even some models of domestic geysers “Neva” can operate both from the main gas and from gas in cylinders (but in any case reconfiguration and re-equipment required).

A 50-liter gas cylinder lasts 2-3 people for about a month with regular use of the dispenser.

If necessary, two cylinders can be connected to the column.

The difference between gas water heaters that run on main gas and gas water heaters that run on a gas cylinder is in the design of the water heater's burner.

There is no need to obtain permission or make a project when installing such a dispenser, unlike a dispenser powered by main gas.

Not all, but only some models of geysers can be powered by gas cylinders.

Since gas water heaters have a high gas consumption, not all water heaters will be able to operate with the minimum amount of gas supplied from the cylinder reducer, in addition, the gas pressure must be greatly reduced.

Yes, there are indeed geysers that can operate both from a cylinder and from main gas, but this is provided by the manufacturer!

Previously, such columns were not produced; all columns had burners with wide nozzles (to create a gas-air mixture for high-quality combustion), modern columns have nozzles and flame ionizers, but again this is not enough.

Of course, you can assemble an entire feeding station from several cylinders and supply the required amount of gas to the column, but will this be reasonable?

Therefore, if you want to do this, you need to find exactly the model that is designed to connect and operate on gas from a cylinder.

For example, Bosch produces models of geysers with a set of additional nozzles for the burner and a reducer that reduces the pressure to the required approximately 0.003 MPa.

Bosch also states that such a unit is capable of operating for 10-15 hours (depending on the set water temperature) on a cylinder of 50 liters of liquefied gas.

If we count according to my standards, I bathe every day, for example, it takes 20 minutes to fill the bath or 15 minutes to run the shower, then this is already 10 hours of operation of the column, it turns out that the cylinder is basically enough for one person for a month.

Installation

Before installing a gas instantaneous water heater using liquefied gas, you need to understand the cylinder. It is important that it meets the following characteristics:

  1. There must be a gearbox on it.
  2. Pressure equal to 300 mm. water Art.
  3. The minimum capacity of the first phase of the cylinder should be 1 m³ per hour.

It is also necessary to purchase a flexible hose with an internal diameter of at least 12 mm and a length of no more than 2.5 m. This hose must withstand the gas, taking into account the required temperature and required pressure.

A gas shut-off valve must be installed in front of the column itself. After you complete the installation, be sure to check all connections and the hose so that if there are any problems, they can be corrected immediately.

If you have experience working with gas equipment, then you can install the gas water heater yourself. If not, you should contact a specialist.
